Just to acknowledge the conversation once again, our teams completely recognise that downloading the content each year, and having multiple versions across store pages, can cause confusion, be stressful and feel unnecessary to players. If there was a solution we could have made this year, we'd have done our best to implement it, but unfortunately we weren't able to make any changes to the process yet. We're still looking at how we can the process smoother for the future, and we hear the thoughts.

Without getting into the full details, there is an incredibly massive difference between an update to an existing title, compared to a new game, when it comes to store support, PR, community growth and generally it's the best call to make TSW as successful as possible - all of which is funneled right back into creating the best version of the game we can. Comparisons to other companies so different, it's hard to say one size fits all, but right now we're taking this approach with the future of TSW and the players in mind.

Fine, you're bringing in a lot more now than just the point about downloading. I have no judgment on that at all. I'm simply saying that downloading games is normal usage, and others here have already mentioned that. If you can’t muster the patience like a little child, that’s your own problem. That’s the story for me. The quality of the game and whether you agree or not with having to wait because of that is another matter. I'd rather leave it at the first point instead of getting into a pissing contest here.

Absolutely fine! I'm proud of it. I think it's a really fun game and I'm not joining in on all that complaining. Anything else?!

Amen! Thanks for that addition, Alex! Why would DTG want to annoy users by deliberately making them download the entire game all over again every single year?

The thing is, DTG was prepared to experiment last year with the free starter pack. It's a pity that DTG won't experiment this year by bringing out a New Journeys-style pack of routes for the same price as a new version, and see if it really does make a difference that merits all this inconvenience. People's libraries are getting bigger all the time, so every year the problem gets worse.

Sooner or later, DTG is going to have to find a solution. Otherwise, where does it stop? I assume you want TSW to still be viable in, say, 5 years' time, but at this rate there will be 10 versions of TSW DLC then.

    Complete Tripe.

There's still bugs on some DLC that came out for TSW2 etc, we're now about to go on TSW 6 and they still aren't fixed. You've had plenty time to sort out so that we don't have to re-download everything each year. There's no excuse.

The fanboys might buy into your forum "PR" wibble but a lot of us can see right through it.

I'm hoping for the following with TSW 6.
    1) A fully functional Route Building Editor (with User Documentation and a Video Training Scheme).
    2) The ability to easily add User Created Content to the main game.
    3) Some sort of Formation Manager that will help us add extra formations to the game. (And not leave it up to me).
    4) A Save button that works.
    5) Some sort of Profanity Filter that allows us to use words like Class, Passenger, Liverpool and Scunthorpe.

Not a long list but, for me, things that have been promised, and that I have paid for, but that have never been delivered by DTG.
Perhaps they will come around this time?

Just adding my 2c here.....if a solution cannot be found for downloading entire DLC collections annually possibly they need to look into how all the layering works.

Maybe owners of DLC could opt to download only the locos from the DLC so they become available in future DLCs rather than entire routes. This will obviously save time and space in the install directories.

I know the pre-TSW3 standalone DLC locos are still tied to routes but maybe work could be done to 'untie' them? Additionally untie the bundled route locos so we could then also have the option of buying all the locos in the game separately.

DTG could then offer to add layered locos into a new DLC as an additional cost for those who want the additional layers without forking out for entire routes the way it is currently.

I know DTG would stand to lose quite a bit of $ in this proposal but I think something like this would be a good long term solution as this issue is only getting worse every year.

I wish people would stop saying no one is forcing you to upgrade. Of course they are! If you own mildmay you will have to update to tsw6, otherwise you won’t get the extension.
It’s all designed to keep you coming back.

Great western remaster? Well I already own great western on tsw5 as far back as 2. But if I stay with 5 we won’t get the remaster. They won’t release it on multiple versions just the newest one!

Re the route building editor, it would also be cool if there was somehow a way for those on console to access the assets for routes they have, but develop on PC (as there is no editor on console)

Yes there is because in order for said marketing on PS and Xbox if it not new it won't be on page 1 and be buried.

And because, this is the big reason, TSW is not TSC. Its a different game.

I can see the angry segment of these virtual halls are making their move and have started early trying to get a resistance movement off the ground about TSW6. And while their movement will be crushed by the opposing tide of reality, the show will be a good one and I've stored plenty of buckets of popcorn for the epic saga that is too come.......

i will state my thoughts on this
yay free starter pack once again!
boooooo we have to pay an extortionate prices again for another route to properly experience TSW6...
And yall say that apparently, they wont fix existing bugs too... so... yea seems more downside more than ups.

I really don’t get the need to release a ‘new’ version every year. And I really don’t get why DTG is continuing to support Gen8 consoles. Move on already.

I feel safe in assuming that recooking and testing seven builds of every route and loco for every release is much more of a hassle for DTG than simply downloading them is for us, and that they would be happy to find a way to avoid it if they could.

I'd also be willing to bet that DTG would be equally happy to lop off the two gen 8 builds, given that it's extra time and money to scale down the DLCs for them, but the fact gen 8 still isn't being dropped means it's still too lucrative to drop.

My hope for TSW6 is that there will be a commitment to making sure that every Journey, Scenario, and Timetable run is completable (this should be a minimum expectation for a game like this), and fixing those that aren't is made a priority. Also, that every feature promised and used to sell the game actually appears in the game.

Wonder if we will get another petition out of it?

The last one was removed from quora so I can see it did well.

How many users will get so angry they will get themselves banned or close their accounts. I counted 3 last time when Thomas was announced on DTDirect.

    I'll say 2.

Great that DTG have decided to let us know about TSW 7 early. I am really hyped for all the new stuff coming out and that TSW is contining to exist. Shout out to DTG for giving us a free starter pack again this year, they are certainly showing some love to the fans and opening the door to new players to try TSW for free once again.

Not onboard with the yellow logo thou, sorry it has to go!!!

As I predicted the GWE remaster is coming out for TSW 6, I did mention it in the GWE post and things got very quiet.

Now, we have a broken TSW 5 with blurry textures, crashing problems and bugs. How is TSW 6 going to be any better if DTG can't fix 5, sticking a yellow logo on the front of it and calling it a new game, is it going to solve all the current problems TSW has or are we just kicking the can down the road for the following year, again?

Some people think once again that the “Free Starter Pack” is the holy grail.

“Free Starter Pack” means you will get a “6” in the game title - for free.

    Nothing more.

Yeah, you will also get your Bugs and uncompletable scenarios from the previous DLC's what you have paid for...

Hopefully they actually test the UI in the TSW6 release. The UI in TSW5 was broken in multiple areas for consoles and took a few months to patch up.
I'd go as far as to say TSW5 was the most broken release of the game to date. It was basically a beta release for about 3 months.

Not to mention any further updates to TSW5 will be dropped like a stone, would be surprised if we even see any more core fixes now. Plus, and apologies if I already mentioned in this thread, it resets all the DLC reviews on Steam to zero so unless people trawl back through the older versions assuming even still on sale they can’t read how good or bad they might be.

Re-downloading DLC isn’t really that bad is it? Why everyone’s blood is boiling over this I don’t know. I have 1GB of internet speed and takes no time at all, but I usually just play DLC, grab all the trophies, delete and move onto the next. I look forward to TSW6.

Looking at something like the BR 187, I can still see for the TSW 5 Version that it's equally bad on the steam store than the TSW 2 version. So it seems people still care.
Also if your only decision-making factor is steam reviews then it's actually also your own fault. In 2025 - at least for TSW - you'll find tons of videos for every DLC on Youtube. By ambassadors or - if you don't trust them - also by non-ambassadors. Commented or uncommented. There are forums in a lot of languages, steam discussion pages and even written reviews. So if you only rely on steam ratings, then you do something wrong.

Pretty much boring news as anybody knew it was going to be announced around this time.

To keep the free starter pack and therefore anybody on board is absolutely the right decision.

As im on Console im also happy to hear that optimisation is still been worked on and being pushed forward.
looking forward to the new routes and actually if they are introducing yet another new country here.

Gen 8 is absolutely ridiculous. Just drop it, it’s done. The difference in performance between the PS4 and PS5 is night and day. The fact some routes are only supported on Gen 9 only reinforces this.

Uiuiuiui ...... a new version, probably spilling the old bugs over to version 6. To be never solved. And adding a few more new exciting bugs.

Hmmm, FWIW no standing ovations from me.

Just curious about the Big Bang DLC announcement. "Thomas" is not easily topped.

They could put fixes for bugs in there. Or some dramatically new gameplay elements. Or something that actually improves the way all the old DLC plays in the new version. Or something other than a logo colour and number change to differentiate it from every version that's gone before it.

What we'll actually get: The pain of having to redownload all our DLC again. Not making any progress toward old DLC trophies. All bugs and glitches carried over to the new version. A whole new raft of bugs from untested legacy DLC falling over under the new version. Some train physics being broken because they changed something in the back end and didn't really think through how it might affect existing code. Struggling to re-download the TSW6 version of something that we might not have re-downloaded and re-activated on TSW5 or earlier. The icons still not correctly tallying up with the game versions in the Manage DLC Content menu on Playstation, because nobody at DTG bothered to even run through the process on a console before release. A new UI, designed by someone who doesn't really understand UI design...

Just another question about TSW 6, will the passengers still be too scared to move at Stratford International or have they removed the Alien investation?

I think the continuation of the free upgrade was a pleasant and welcomed surprise. It means people can get the updates and new features for free. I think DTG can't be fairer then that... It's certainly the option I'm going for this year. I'm hoping the optimisations made for TSW6 are substantial and a massive improvement over TSW5.

Is it a pain in the behind having to redownload content? Yeah, but it's not the end of the world. If I'm getting the base game for free, it's no skin off of my nose.

I'll be leaving the new routes for now (whatever they are) for the first time in years. Last years situation left a bitter taste in my mouth. If I see the UK content holds up I'll fork out, but if it's a repeat of WCMLS I'll avoid it. I'm not hyping up or placing expectations on this years new title to avoid disappointment.

I have every wish TSW6 proves me wrong and is a good release, but given how TSW5s lifespan has panned out along with it's outstanding issues has led me to sit on the fence. So I genuinely appreciate the free upgrade to the base game, it gives me an opportunity to be included without the need to spend money on a product I'm uncertain about at this moment in time, and gives me the opportunity to enjoy things like the GWE remaster, the NLL extension etc...

DTG Alex Please could you answer a couple of questions?

We have endless performances problems with every series of TSW, so why are DTG releasing TSW6 before solving all the performance issues first?

Also TSW6 will be available for gen8 platforms, but will the unsuitably TSW5 gen8 products be available to play under TSW6 for gen 8 consoles? What l am saying is will products like Manchester Commuter and Frankfurt S Bahn work in TSW6 on a gen8 platform?

I've not seen someone call anyone a "DTG Fanboy" in a while. Remarkable how much less hostile the community was without that meaningless phrase.

    1. The yearly release of a new version of the core game is part of the agreed business cycle with the shareholders.
    2. Performance issues will never be 100% eradicated, it is a rolling program.
    3. Routes that did not release for GEN8 will not magically be playable in TSW6
    4. TSW supports GEN8 but not all future DLC will be compatible, no change from TSW5

Too many players on GEN8 still. You can't just cut off 15% (guess) of your players as 15% revenue is a substantial amount of money.

    1. They yearly new version of the game generates substantial income + a large chunk of new players.
    2. If GEN8 players still make up 15% (guess) of the player base, why cut them + that revenue off.

Caltrain content will not be available to play in TSW6.

If you want to play Caltrain content you will need to use an installation of TSW5.
