It is basically kicking the can down the road with a promise that things will get better? The problem with that is that DTG have done it over a span of several years and now it has turned into a monster. It is good that old routes get a remaster, but there also needs to be a lower grade of that where old routes get bug fixes. Like NTP you are just driving a train round for the sake of it because no passengers get on or off? The passenger system like...have you met Bob?
If gen8 really is holding the game back then how come they get the quieter timetables. If they hold the game back, how come the gen9 and pc versions have much more detail compared to gen8. Clearly not holding the game back lol
exactly or I agree. i feel like when people say "perfection" its honestly very far fetch. Like yea preferably TSW have good route concept, the trains that are modeled into the game, no bugs and good optimisation is desirable situation. But even then, with the still not fixed bugs which would still persist until TSW6 for god knows how long. And here you're basically saying having bugs is fine and they absolutely dont need to be fixed and leaving players who which may encounter these unfix bugs feeling frustrated. And this is only the bugs we are talking about here much of the other elements of TSW is as star#5823 said was not delivered and how could players not be frustrated with the addition of the lack of quality control when a route or game is launched.
No I’m not, you’re putting words into my mouth. The problem is people don’t know how to get their point across in a civil way. They resort to childish insults. I only said bugs will continue to exist, not that I think bugs are okay. No one wants a bad experience when playing a game, bugs do get resolved eventually, but then new content, features gets released and the code changes. The sequence of code that made the game stable prior to those changes now is broken. It’s a repeated cycle. I understand it’s frustrating, but you have to accept TSW for what it is. These bugs you speak of will most likely continue to exist for many years to come. Can you accept that? If not, there are other options.
As a veteran Forum and Discord moderator, heated agreement from me. The issue people have in response to complaints is not the complaints themselves but almost always the way in which they are written.
There’s something I really hope is fixed because it’s really annoying is that finally, they’ll fix the camera joystick issue as I have to spam R3 (RS on Xbox) to switch between various camera views. Of course I’m also hoping for more optimisation for the core game.
I really want to see DLSS 4 and FSR 3 (For older AMD cards and pre RTX nvidia cards) + 4 (For RX 9000 which looks a lot better) added to TSW, the inbuilt TAA implementation is blurry and ghosts like crazy... It looks bad.
Hi everyone. I'm new here. I've been playing TSW 5 for half a year now, and I saw the news about the release of TSW6. I have some questions. 1. I bought TSW 5, will the upgrade to version 6 be free for me? The same question about purchased DLC. 2. What is the point of annual updates: the transition to a new engine or just financial intent?
Considering TSW5 DLC could be made to work in TSW4 and vice versa (I have a hunch that the same will be the case for 6 unless DTG changes something to purposely make it not work) it's purely marketing and financial.
TSW6 will have a free starter pack, probably for a limited time again, which allows you to upgrade for free. Your DLCs (excl. Caltrain) transfer for free regardless of if you use the free starter pack or not.
I like that they're doing the Free Starter Pack thing again. Perfect compromise: if they're releasing a new TSW, people can still upgrade without buying anything.
It still affects the scope at which you can design content, it's the lowest common denominator. This isn't a hard concept to grasp, for example if I was designing a game and I was targetting hardware like those consoles whatever I make has to run on them, limiting the size of maps, complexity of geometry, physics, ai etc etc due to the limited CPU, GPU and RAM... We can argue all day if DTGs habits of making short routes that go from nowhere to nowhere is to do with Gen 8 or just lack of developer skills and ambition but one thing that definitely will be affected is QA testing, because just by supporting them you've added 4 (5 if they account for the Xbox One S being faster than the original Xbox One) pieces of hardware to test with different capabilities. The dev time wasted on those could be better put to use actually making a polished experience, perhaps even pushing the boundaries for those with hardware that can cope with RT for example, RT lighting would fix the random glowing carriages problem from their light baking process as an example of a benefit it would have.
I also did not find any information on the forum about whether a train conductor mode will be added to the existing passenger DLC in the future?
The executive producer has already explained that length, complexity of physics, etc is not affected by gen8. Gen8 can run long and complex routes. However, it has a difficult time with lots of traffic and lots of big assets. That is where the memory issues come in. They build for gen9 and scale back for gen8. Sure, testing becomes easier, but it does not make the user experience magically better
Last I heard (this was a while ago) was they’d wait to see how the feature was received on new DLC. I do hope they go back and implement though, ECML especially. A few have been updated, BCC springs to mind
I'm looking forward to the new iteration. I've enjoyed 5 and it's content/DLC just as I enjoyed 4 etc. Bring it on, DTG.
Gen 8 is 12 years old at this point, Gen 9 is nearing 5 years old, we are now closer to Gen 10 than Gen 9s release. To be honest if you haven't scrounged up 300 for a used PS5 at this point it really is a skill issue... I wasn't going to poor shame, but then I remembered what year it was. The argument I read from matt is that if they dropped Gen 8 they'd just fire the QA testers for it and not bother to improve the other versions of the game rather than leveraging those employees to make a more polished product from dropping older hardware, which makes sense, they want to make as much money by spending as little money as possible to deliver shareholder value (read: enshittification) but I personally feel thats a bad approach.
Not dropping gen 8 and using that time and resource to elevate the game seems very short termist. It's clearly profitable to go down this path for now, but I think the game, and therefore everyone, will suffer.
It’s a slippery slope though. Drop Gen 8 and raise the requirements and suddenly you have a whole raft of PC players running older hardware who suddenly find they need a five digit I7 and a RTX 3080 to still play the game. In the meantime, TSC, SimRail, Run 8 etc. still plod along nicely on our potato PC’s so no more DLC purchases from us.
That is already the case. TSW is the only game my 2080ti and 5600X struggle with, FPS down in the 20s in Frankfurt
Apparently 10-15% of TSW users are Gen8, and these would be lost moving to Gen9 only. What isn’t suggested is that the majority of these users might actually opt to upgrade to PS5/XboxSX anyway.
Realistically, the only thing gen 8 is "holding back" is dev time. If gen 8 was dropped then DTG wouldn't have to worry about extra optimization for the older consoles. You wouldn't see a leap in anything else other than the time it takes to release routes since they don't have to cater to gen 8.
Oh true enough. My “potato” which has been scorned on here several times, can do Forza Horizon 4 and Dirt Rally 2 very well - that’s with an I7 4770 and GTX 1650.
Which to be fair, are both 6+ year old games that (console wise) were built for xbox 1 and derivatives
So, like TSW then. Lets be honest now, it's the very same game. To be fair, TSW2 routes runs and looks much better for me in TSW2.
The op suggesting that most Gen8 users would opt to upgrade to Gen9 or higher is nonsense - if they were willing to do so for TSW they would already have done so - but likely TSW is only one of the games (sim) they own and they are ok with the performance of the rest. We need an injection of game theory (a mathematical not gaming concept) here.
again i aint a console player. But like this convo aint going anywhere, dropping gen 8 console support only what frees up little time for DTG and kinda makes no difference to development time AND just cuts out on gen 8 console players forcing them to upgrade to a better console... which that also needs money. But the only difference it makes is that maybe a bit more development time thats really all i am getting. There's not much difference.
I think I read that DTG's excuse for not dropping Gen8 is that it will not change much as Gen8 get watered down versions anyway. Surely Gen9 would benefit from Gen8 being cut as more staff would be working on Gen9 at the bare minimum no? I don't really see DTG losing them as customers as they still have all the versions leading up to TSW5 to play on as well, and if they wanted to what is stopping them from releasing a route for a previous version? As for the 'free' version every year I see it as way for DTG to bury bugs they can't be bothered to fix. Anyone remember 'Rush hour' with all the extra passengers? They made promotional video's saying it was the best thing since sliced bread (Sarcasm) but look now how they buried that one. TSW for me holds so much potential and when I them bring in this 'Guard' mode I thought they were edging closer to a 'career mode' Which imo would bring more sales in if done properly but no just point A to point B.
i wondering want big features will tsw6 have. one feature i love to see is ability to load and unload rail cars and change fuel setting on locomotive in the consist editor. another one but i know it never going to happen was unreal 4.27 even know it dose nothing but still nice change from 4.26. if the first feature one can't be done cause of unreal engine then tsw6 is nothing more then route dlc pack witch they could of name it tsw5 service pack or something.
I think ATS may have latched on to something that will become a regular feature of future TSW routes regardless of whether Gen 8 continues past TSW6, the Sunday timetable. I'm loving having the choice of a quiet run with a smattering of other services and a more intense timetable.
In my own personal opinion, none of the core features, updates, routes, and patches justifies a whole new game worth $80+. I mean look at games like Fortnite for example: They implemented a whole new movement system, they come out with new maps monthly, new modes, and events. There isn't a Fortnite 2, 3, or 4 every time they want to implement a feature or make a simple addition to the game. Now I know that game is completely free and nowhere near a simulation genre, so another simulation based game: Madden NFL, made by EA Sports drops annually and again, nothing that impactful or noticeable to drop an entire new game when they could simply build on one game and update it. But at the end of the day, I guess DTG needs money to pay their developers and I suppose this business strategy is effective as they have not yielded on the annual releases up to this point.
Well you never know, there might be some official leaks or blunders to keep the anticipation up. We can always rely on JD (sorry, JD) to let something slip; there’s the inevitable failure to hide something on a menu screen while doing a presentation or stream - that sort of thing. And with still 6 weeks or so to go to Direct, DTG themselves know they need to keep anticipation and interest on the boil so watch for hints or cryptic clues whenever they are speaking.
Jeez Louise - you can't be serious with this matter. To be honest, now this is a deal breaker for me. I really think I even wont be claiming the free upgrade anymore and my journey with tsw will end. Last year was a terrible experience from the beginning with the teadious downloads of the content. I will not go through that again, just because you need some new publicity. I really had high hopes after Rush Hour, but man, was is a ride down into disapointment.
There are plenty of games that drop annual 'new' (i.e. mostly unchanged) versions - Madden, EA FC et al - but I wonder if TSW is the only game that has annual versions and a massive (and continually growing) back catalogue of DLC that has to be copied into new versions for each annual release?
Football Manager has had annual re-releases some of which offered very little in the way of updates or new features since the last big change to the 3d match engine in 2009. Obviously FM26 (assuming it happens) will be a huge change at long last as it moves to being made on Unity. They likely won't offer a discount for those who have FM24 (25 was cancelled) but players will be able to carry over their saved games to FM26.
As tedious as the redownloading can be, I think people are being a little bit over dramatic... Don't get me wrong I get slightly frustrated, but when there is a free starter pack and I only have to do it once a year, it really isn't any skin off of my nose. I've had far more frustrating things go on in my life to care... I'd imagine in future this will be streamlined a bit better to make the transfer more simple, but as for now spending an hour or two redownloading my content once a year really doesn't bother me personally.
It’s more frustration that DTG can’t do it better after all this time. I’m sure the majority of people running TSW have other games they can play in the meantime and in this day and age, with the emphasis on digital everything including streaming TV channels, how many people don’t have unlimited Broadband? Hopefully our recently upgraded to fibre service will make things quicker. Hey and I can fill in all the holes Openreach left, while I wait for the TSW DLC to acquire!
Is there any reason why you can't buy the game and download the initial 3 base DLC that it comes with and then download the others as you need, some you may not download at all for the year if you don't like them, does it have to be all in one?
Some on here clearly don't have MS Flight Simulator. Downloading updates on that can take hours if there are updates to more than a dozen large DLCs. I can't even remember TSW taking that long (on steam). Set it up to download, go and make some lunch, do a little housework or go for a little stroll and it's usually done by the time by the time you get back to your gaming machine. Plus, you can choose which DLC you want to include in the download on Steam, if there are any routes/DLC you don't use or need, untick it.
That's how I did it last year. Untick all the DLC in Steam then put back in a few at a time. The complication with doing this with TSW (as opposed to TSC) is the much more complex layering. For example, Goblin Line would be a low priority for me but the 710's are essential to flesh out the DC Lines on WCMLS. Obviously the priority would be putting back in any DLC required to layer on whatever the new routes might be.
I'm sure there are far more inconveniencing things in your life than spending 2 to 3 hours once a year downloading TSW DLC. If not, then you have don't have a lot of patience.
It's not just downloading it. Though that is indeed inconvenient enough. There's also: The mods that become incompatible and may not be updated (since many leave TSW due to this nonsense) Paths that break. And the fact that older content runs significantly worse. Of course, I could have TSW3 and older content downloaded as well, but I still need the older content installed on TSW5 for layers on the newer routes, massive waste of space on my drive. But then again, I personally refuse to get inconvenienced by corps for their benefit, and their benefit only..
This, so much this, I'll redeem the free offer for TSW6 when it comes just to have it, but I probably won't be installing and switching to it for a while because of mods. I have a fair amount of extra stock and enhancement packs at this point, and frankly it's gonna take something special for me to want abandon all that, plus Peninsula Corridor. And frankly knowing how the output for TSW's been for the past few releases it's probably gonna be six months before a route I actually want releases at best.
