I really do think something needs to be done about fog in TSW. It appears way too frequently, it seems to last forever, and when it ends it disappears like a switch is flicked.

I appreciate that fog can be part of a realistic weather system, and create a varied challenge when driving, but sometimes you just don't want it. Sometimes you want to see the route as you drive. Could there be a way of toggling which weather types appear in dynamic weather? I think dynamic weather is otherwise excellent, I like the fact that e.g. rain can kick in, but fog just ruins the experience for me.

My main problem with fog is that it makes the whole game turn grey, as if colors don't exist, which is unrealistic. Even with fog, grass should be green, not grey.

Just start with light clouds instead clear weather. You'll almost never see fog again. Rather light to medium rain. Very rarely thunderstorm.

Yes dynamic fog is horrible. If I use fog it’s only in the custom settings, just a notch high though, maybe around 5%. I do like how enhances the train lights and surrounding areas. My preferred time to drive is early morning or when the sun is breaking on the horizon. :)

I use about 3% fog on most journeys. I like the appearance and I find it avoids pop-in of objects in the distance. Things appear gradually out of the very slight distant mist, which looks more realistic.

Below is one of my favourite shots:

    Ts2prototype Screenshot 2025.08.17 - 12.08.49.71.png
When done right, fog looks so good and makes the game feel so atmospheric. I personally use 5% ish whenever I use it though

Maybe it's because I'm not in the middle of the UK but fog is so rare outside of late Autumn/early winter here on the Essex coast that I've switched Dynamic Fog off as it seems too regular and combines with the wrong weather/wrong time of the day/wrong time of the year in Dynamic Weather.

Looks green to me....but I like this shot 'cuz of the mountains and silhouettes of trees in the background. Greenery doesn't matter too much to me.

Fog is one of those effects that really should be implemented discreetly and in moderation. The days of the infamous “pea souper” in the UK are pretty much gone, more likely to be a light mist around dawn which progressively vanishes as the sun comes up (or the air warms even under cloud). Only in the coldest winter months might you find it persisting through the day.

FWIW I think it’s way too dense generally using the menu slider. With things as they are I would use absolutely no more than 2% for the thickest fog and 1% for moderate fog. What you really need is more granular control over it and then set anywhere between 0.004-0.009% for light to thicker mist and currently this can only be set with unreal unlocker or GodMode on PC only. It massively helps the visuals if, from dawn to dusk, there is a minimum of 0.001 (ideally 0.002) set as it simulates the real world ‘environment’ and the colours become much more realistic and natural.

Anything more than the above maximum (2%) is unrealistically dense and wipes out all the colour and detail as previously noted.

I did a run the other day with a low amount of fog, but I briefly looked away, and in that brief time, it'd all gone.

Yeah that sounds like what I try to achieve. Just a pinch of fog without washing out the scenery.
I’ve never gone for the full Silent Hill experience, but I couldn’t imagine it being a fun drive :)

Fair play, in TSW6 the fog does seem to disappear more subtly. It still seems to be every time though. Particularly dispiriting when you want to take a first look at a route. Looks like turning off dynamic weather is the only option, which is a shame, because I quite enjoy the other elements of it.

I hadn't used dynamic weather for a long time. Switched it on today, skipped forwards to January, starting on clear. It remained clear for a while, until— fog! Then snow. So is it true fog is inevitable on every dynamic weather run?

It seems to be the case that most trips with Dynamic Weather switched on does involve fog. You can switch-off volumetric fog in the settings menu and that makes the dynamic weather a little more realistic. I also switch off lightning effects outside the summer months for UK routes as lightning is fairly rare between October and April.

Just occasionally you get an Autumn/Winter/early Spring shower that produces a flash or two of lightning. Even rarer in the UK is lightning in a snow storm, it's an amazing sight but I've only seen it twice in 52 years.

I gave up on dynamic weather around TSW5 launch, the transitions are just too jarring and abrupt imo. I'd love to see a "live weather" option. I'm hoping passengers and weather get a major overhaul in TSW7.

I do think one d-pad notch of fog (i play on PC with controller) is quite nice if you want a hazy/humid day.

Counterintuitively, that same setting can also help with night-time visibility because the fog particles catch your headlight beams a little bit.

God Mode is useful. You can create a really soupy fog. It can be fun seeing signals and stations at the last moment.

Yesterday I run 2 services on 2 routes:

Leipzig - Dresden: I selected clouded, but with dynamic weather.

Riviera Line: Little rain but with dynamic weather

    The fact... weather never changed!

    I am on PS5.

Isn't that a good thing? I mean, it's supposed to be random, right? So no change is a valid option.

Yes, I have to say I ran a few routes before I got one where the weather changed. I saw that as a positive.

I'm just waiting to see if I ever get one of the random signalling events. Not that I've noticed so far on normal frequency.

I stopped playing tsw on xbox long time ago but recently run newly upgraded East Coastway Remastered, the fog made it a Silent hill every time I tried it in dynamic weather. Unbearable...

DTG haven't said anything but as an obsessive cloud watcher, I think there have been some subtle improvement to the weather engine and in particular the regularity of specific weather events. But not fog. It's still too common and in totally the wrong situations.

    This. :D

I like the dynamic weather feature too.
But playing in the winter months, you're certain to get heavy snowstorms at some point.
If we could simply deselect the effect we don't want (fog, snow, etc), that would already be a good start.

When this fog appears for me. It is almost red all of the time. Horrible. I would love to play with Dynamic Weather. I am however forced to play with custom weather.

I just stick to custom weather. The dynamic weather is horrible in this game. It always goes foggy for me too.

Just in case anyone playing on PC isn’t aware, the route annotations plugin/mod/app from user Winzarten also has a fantastic live weather mod which solves a whole load of the issues that the built in dynamic weather has, such as abrupt transitions

    https://gitlab.com/winzarten/tsw-route-annotations

TSS did a video review of it too

I can’t drive with the vanilla weather anymore!

I find this weird. The last time I remember seeing a lot of snow was 16 years ago.

In fact, I don't even think I've seen any snow at all for at least the past two years.

And the fog will be a pleasant, extremely rare occurrence. And it won't be a dense wall.

    AAh yes fog.
As what jetwash said in September, its far too dense.
Id love to be able to use the engine ini to make the fog 100x weaker/less dense. It would look stunning to have some early morning haze - a mist opportunity...?
Sadly not been able to find any Unreal Engine 4 code to properly dilute the mist.

I used to think the sudden fog was ok, as at the time i mostly played the Blackpool route. In the North of the UK we often get sudden and very dramatic rolling fog along the coastline. It seems to happen when there is a dramatic difference between the heat of the land and sea. It kinda seemed appropriate for the Blackpool line.

You can be having a lovely hot summers' day and *BAM* cold rolling fog obscures everything and you have to put a coat on.
It looks like some Steven King phenomenon when it suddenly rolls in.

    But anyhoo.
if anyone has any suggestion for making the fog less dense please point me in the right direction,

The simplest and best option for dramatically improving the weather.

The weather effects in TSW turn out to be simply wonderful if used correctly. This is what this app does automatically. Anything else is pointless.

    Use winzertens app or GodMode.

0.001-0.003 gives a nice light mist, 0.009 is dense enough for full blown fog.

FWIW I’ve spent a good amount of time curating the weather for Medway Valley’s Scenarios and Journey Mode for just this reason!

the weather system in tsw needs a complete rework; the way fog appears and disappears, rain falling without any clouds, always snow instead of rain in winter months etc
