As the thread title stated, the proposed merger of Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific into a transcontinental freight railroad.

But sticking it in the wrong forum won't have made that clear to people.

 

I didn’t know what Up/Ns meant, as I’m not familiar with US railways.

So now BNSF and CSX have announced new coast-to-coast joint intermodal services. Rings much nicer to the STB - whose approval isn't even a necessity, though.

 

I guess the CSX/BNSF partnership counts as an example of meeting the STB's requirements on it inducing "enhanced competition" resulting from the CP/NS announcement.

 

Witnessing the number of class I railroads in NA decreasing by 2 (CP+KCS, UP+NS) in one's era is quite some experience, I'd say.

 

Just merge it all into one and nationalise it already!
Could call it something cool like, I dunno... "Consolidated Rail", maybe?

 

Considering the blue tone of this news-only site, it won't surprise me if named to Conrail II or something.
