So I play through this service on Oakville Subdivision.... get to the end.... it says I have 400 some feet to go.... boom derail. Like its probably telling me the distance from the loco I'm driving , but what good is that when Im pushing a train of tanker cars? Was I supposed to know exactly how long the train is and then mentally calculate that in?

    That's an ethanol loading service.
You can see out of your window the loading gantry to your right. If your loco is passing it, you've gone too far. You need to park up such that the first tanker coupled to your loco lines up with the first overhanging walkway, as this means the whole train is lined up for when you get out and fill them up.

You are correct that it is telling you the distance incorrectly. The HUD shows the distance to the objective from you as the player in the driver seat but the objective is where you need to stop the leading end of the train. That means if you are pushing a load of tankers (like here) or reversing a long train you need to use the external camera and the in-game objective marker to see where to stop. Or you can indeed work it out from knowing the length of the train, which can be found on the overview screen in the pause menu.

It’s usually not a problem that the distance is measured from the driver when you are in the lead loco driving forwards as the front of the train is only a few feet away from you but can be an issue in a steam loco, or driving a US loco long hood forwards or in any case where you are not in the leading vehicle in the direction of travel, like here.

Yeah, one way is knowing your train length. Or you can take a glance at the map to see where the other end is relative to the stop point.

Although, as I said, for this particular kind of service, you can literally use your eyes out of the cab window to see where you need to stop the tanker coupled to the loco, and all the ones beyond that point will be lined up as well because the loading gantries are spaced to match the length of the tankers.

^ Well, you can't see the end of the train from the cab, head in or out. Of-course you can use another camera view, but I trusted the HUD because that's what I've always done and there is nothing in the sim that tells you not to.

I do appreciate the replies. thanks!

As I say, this service you only need to see that the tanker coupled to the loco is lined up with the closest gantry and know the whole train will be. Doesn't help with other services where the loco is pushing, but in this one Oakville instance it's basically a matter of route knowledge.
