Has any noticed / heard that when travelling on the Transport Police livery and they give out the phone to call they say SIX ONE O ONE SIX, should that not be SIX ONE ZERO ONE SIX
I raised this point in one of the other threads. Even though it goes against the principles of the phonetic alphabet and numbers apparently this is how it’s recited IRL. Working on the real railway correct use of phonetics was drummed into as regards safety comms and it kind of rankles a bit.
It appears some companies pronounce it as Oh, some as Zero. Six one oh one six is more common though.
Yes it does. This is supposed to be a simulation and safety critical voice comms are part of that. Okay in this case it's a pre-recorded public announcement but if we ever get to the point of voice interaction between player and AI signaller then they need to get it right.
To lots of people, yes. Just because it doesn’t matter to you, doesn’t mean it doesn’t matter to others. It’s part of the immersion. Besides, if the current version makes no difference to you, why would having the prototypical version cause you problems?
Its not causing me problems. I merely asked if it mattered. When you look at the scope of issues the route has had, saying oh instead of zero is a minor issue. Plus wouldnt your attention be on driving the train, rather than focusing on what the speech actually says?
If the real railways say "oh," then incorrect or not the sim is doing its job. Remember, those announcements are recorded by actors, not trained police comms personnel.
More important still, they are recorded for passengers, most of whom probably refer to zero as oh in phone numbers. (This is a bit like computer scientists getting annoyed with people for counting from 1 to 10 rather than 0 to 9.)
Whenever I ask for someone's phone number they generally start off by saying 07 not zero 7. As far as I'm aware no UK phone numbers have letters in them so there's no need for to pronounce zero.
If im correct the route it self reflect 2018/2019 and they say in the stream the number has changed but maybe i have understood that wrong.
I find I sometimes need to code shift when reading numbers over the phone to people with different accents, as some are more likely to hear "oh" as "four" while others hear "zero" as "three oh"
I’ve heard zero but it is definitely used less than oh I don’t think I’ve ever read out a phone number and used zero in my life. I recall even as a child oh live and kicking (a popular children’s Saturday morning tv show on the uk) the the number was always oh one eight one eight one eight one eight one
Ha, I'm old enough to remember when it changed from 081 to 0181, and they re-recorded the jingle for it. And indeed Multi-Coloured Swap Shop before that, with 01 811 8055. All 'oh' rather than 'zero'!
Then there was bacon sarnie loving Ed Milliband who only created 'Net Zero' because his original project left him at risk of getting sued by these guys.

Well, I'm sitting on a West Midlands train and the recorded lady announcer has just said 'oh', not 'zero'!
And of course, there's a certain spy whose code number definitely isn't 'double-zero-seven'. EDIT - Gah, too slow.
