The Deutsche Bundesbahn logo was nicknamed the Kekse or cookie, because on the old 1950s locos it was a cast aluminium plate. That gave way to a painted or decal version in white, or on some blue/ivory locos blue (and dark red on the TEE/IC livery)

However, late in its run DB started applying a version of the old logo (not the new DBAG logo) in bright red. When was this change made?

When the old DB and DR formed to be DB AG in 1993, and the new logo was fased in as locos went through works, imo the old logo is levels above the new one.

Thanks, but that's not what I was asking. I am wondering about the old logo, but in red, as here:

I believe that was done at random at some point during the 80s but very few locos every carried it.

Hmmmm. Is it possible that it was, in the 1987-1994 period, a nod to Orientrot for locos that weren't scheduled for overhaul/repainting? A decal could simply be applied at the depot.
