What happened to the Class 104 dlc for the Peak Forest Railway? Not seen it in the road map for a while and I was really looking forward to that add on. Does anyone know what happened to it?
Lost in the wilderness of the Peak District and never to be seen again, apparently Lord Lucan was driving it at the time
Wasnt the 104 supposed to be for the Hope Valley line? Which was taken off the road map a while ago. Im hoping it comes back as part of a Manchester - Sheffield route, with modern stock.
I don’t recall Hope Valley ever being on the roadmap. It was intended to add diesel services to Peak Forest along with a new timetable, but seems to have died a death.
No it was always Peak Valley. It was also supposed to come with a couple of new wagons too. It's a shame because it would've sold well and a Blue version would've also worked very well on Blackpool too. But it is now deceased. It is an ex-Class 104
Really sad if this does not release as 104 are great dmus and the peak Forrest is a fantastic route woukd have gone well together.
As with much DLC, it was announced and put on the Roadmap far too early, when the only proof of concept from the developer was a scree dump from a 3D modelling programme. It's also a shame DTG couldn't have worked with the developer to get it finished, given the pretty basic timetable they lumbered PFR with (no Buxton shuttles for one).
It would be nice if DTG could just level with us with what's happening on this one. Please just put us out of our misery
Started out in the editor, but DTG enrolled the creator as a third party. I think the last update had a fair bit of scenery down in one area, but I don’t recall much since then & that was a couple of years ago. The thread is in the creators forum somewhere.
It was officially said in a roadmap long time ago already that there is no progress and players can consider the project cancelled.
Indeed, and there are various threads where this has been discussed. Do wish people would use the search function before starting new threads!
As SimTrack work with JT on scenarios, pity JT couldn't work with them on this. A Class 104 for their routes would be perfect as well.
It was taken off the roadmap due to lack of progress but I don't think it's been officially canned though so it could possibly make a comeback in the future.
I bought the route when the class 104 was announced, I feel cheated, the route so desperately needs it
I mean it wouldn’t be the first time, honestly wouldn’t be too surprised if it’s got progress but we will find out at 2pm
I took bought it for the same reason, I bought SOS as steam was seemingly going to be part of the sim going forward judging by the fanfare surrounding it. If I'd known what was to come, both would have been purchased in a deep sale just for the layers they offer. An opportunity wasted. I hope the class 104 pack is still a future release but I suspect not, hope I'm wrong. It's a lovely route but the timetable is so unrepresentative of what it would have been.
Steam on tsw is a bit like brexit, people seemed to want it. so dtg gave it, yet made such a mess of it now nobody wants it.
I mean not really, yes people were disappointed with what was delivered, but DTG told us they were making fixes. Very few made it vocal that they didn’t want anymore steam & people seemed willing to stick with it. It was DTG who unilaterally decided to drop it.
Indeed. There are still plentiful ideas for steam traction in the Suggestion forum, both UK and elsewhere. Just that it comes up against DTG’s unwillingness to revisit the sub genre or even improve what we got. Even without going off and doing something GWR or SR there was huge scope to flesh out SoS with additional locos and stock. But DTG’s approach to their steam routes was like building a huge model railway but not buying anything to run on it. Once Paul Jackson’s vanity project had been met the enthusiasm faded away like most of the other DLC. Though SoS can’t have been a complete flop or the project management wouldn’t have signed off on PFR.
Going by timing I get the impression PFR might have already started development before SoS had been 'fully' patched and finished. There was a lot of hype for TSW's first steam route back then in the TSW2 era, the only big flop we had endured so far had been the results of the Unreal 4.26 move which came with Rush Hour so I guess you could say there was a lot more community morale. It wasn't until the route actually launched in such a broken state that locomotives were launching and going space shuttle status that the morale started to drop, but I wouldn't be surprised if the second steam route had already been greenlit by that point based on the community hype alone. Especially when DTG might have figured that the route was getting a few extra updates with TSW3 mere months later which would redeem it. Of course we now know with hindsight that it didn't happen, that today SoS is in such a bad state in terms of route detail and timetable that the only reason to recommend buying it is for railtour timetable layers elsewhere, and PFR suffers from many similar issues, not to mention the steam physics themselves. But at the time, with the community praising the previews we were recieving and the upgrades and patches of TSW3 just around the corner, it's easy to see how it might have looked like the only way was up for steam.
So by a quick check of Wikipedia there was 31 types of 1st Gen DMU. Right now all we have is the 101. Compare how many new style units are done this is a real small proportion. I get that many dont exist or were very small in number but still. The 108 is probably the most useful followed by the 117 and 104. Shame the 104 is done would have been day one from me and many others.
I'd love to see sales figures for SOS and PFR and any future plans they had at the time. There's a lot of fan "theories" but officially there's very little said. I still say they could have rescued the routes even without more "in depth" steam with some decent early diesel traction that was appropriate to the routes. Some of it we already had in game too. I think it's really on third parties now to carry the ball. DTG members have admitted as much. And that seems to not be happening. There is a market there for a third party to step in, but there's only so many devs and they have their own individual interests (like JT and their focus on 80s or HIS and their focus on US freight) It'll take a third party dev who loves steam and/or early diesel traction to make anything happen.
Indeed they are, it was announced in today's season of reveals update that JT are developing the Cumbrian Coast Line route between Carlisle and Whitehaven complete with the class 108
Along with the Northern end of the Cumbrian coast as far as Whitehaven, some fantastic announcements today *Edit* SNAP!
Yes, there's something rather disingenuous about DTG touting the return of steam since they have abandoned it themselves. It's rather like my taking credit for my little brother's athletic prowess, which I would never do. Credit to TSG for reintroducing steam traction ( albeit on an electrified. route ), but, thanks to DTG's lack of will, there's no chance, it seems, that there will be any UK or US steam routes and trains in TSW in the future, unless they can find some 3P's willing to take the chance that they shy away from.
I could be wrong, but I seem to recall the developer behind Victory works expressing an interest in doing a short route and a small steam loco for TSW but was put off by the current state of the steam simulation. Perhaps this could be enough to persuade him to make something for TSW?
As I read the article, TSG (with participation from DTG) are overhauling steam, with the plan to have a new Simugraph steam system which DTG (and third parties) can use going forward (including, one hopes, reworks of the existing four steam locos). DTG abandoned steam because, in the first instance, they couldn't really get it to work. The knock on effect from that was poor sales, not because there is no market for it but because the implementation was poor. This might change that.
Where do you read " with participation from DTG "? Boost them all you want, but in the absence of any prior statements from DTG that they were engaged in this work, personally I would give all the credit for the return of steam to TSG.
Third parties aren't allowed to mess with the game's core code. DTG would have to do that - in conjunction with TSG, obviously, but DTG certainly didn't just hand over the core to a third party, even a really trusted one, and say "have at it."
Unsupervised? I doubt it. The one loophole is this: Lukas works for both companies. But anything done in the core would have to get DTG ratification.
It would be good if DTG actually explained their problem with steam physics, there are a lot of smart folks on here, and maybe a fresh perspective would help them, but alas they still haven't learned how to communicate in any other way of saying we can't/wont do x, and leave it at that without any further information, thus leaving everyone in the dark getting frustrated while further eroding the playerbase faith in them, were not asking for a full bullet pointed presentation of X problem just a general outline, and still all we get is silence. Maybe 2026 will be when DTG communicate better, we can all but live in hope.
