Just a curiosity really..... We have a like, we have a helpful, is there functionality for a thumbs down. There's some real tripe posted at times and my fingers get into these wild wild wars of attrition with being constructive and rational vs what my inner voice thinks occasionally A simple down vote to say " i disagree" may be much easier to .. A- express disagreement to view B- express post is tripe C- keep me out of mischief DTG Alex DTG Harry is there that functionality.... Thank you
I have to say, I'm glad there isn't one. Some of the most toxic forums I've been on have been because of the down vote button. A lot of the more obsessive forum users would use it constantly against people they didn't like, who would then either retaliate or complain which then led to many off topic arguments.... And we have quite enough of them already.
a dislike button would only make things worse. lots of people on here (myself included) get wound up by little things and too many threads would just descend into chaos
It could also be used to harass other members, though maybe preferable to some little squirt choosing to nitpick or gaslight every time you post something they don’t agree with.
I don’t know if I’m remembering this correctly but I believe that when there was a downvote/dislike/thumbs down button as soon as your post got a certain number of them the post disappeared or got hidden from immediate view. That meant people could gang up on individual members and silence them. In any case it was being used to bully people and we successfully lobbied for the feature to be removed.
I think it did. I agree it could be used to bully. The one silver lining would be that those making sweary rants as seen this morning might get the message that those sort of posts aren't wanted. But l agree having the feature back is unlikely to be beneficial as a whole.
Definitely a No Thanks Chief. Certain members of the forum are known and documented bullies. They would have a field day. Fugetaboudit!!
I agree with others here saying no to a downvote button. It would just cause hell and fights between forum members… especially those who take it far too serious. We have had members on here threaten devs before in the past after all because they didn’t get what they wanted from them. YouTube sort of got rid of theirs too. You can still dislike videos but it no longer shows how many dislikes a video has. To be honest they should just get rid of it altogether.
If you don't like the thematic of a specific video that was suggested to you, you click on it and the program ("the algorithm" as they say, sounds better ) won't suggest that kind of video again. So that's useful somehow.
Is it really so difficult to just ignore posts you don't like? I don't see the point of a dislike feature that would get abused

I'm pretty thick skinned to be fair so i'll hold my hands up that wasnt something i considered. Reading the replies here are interesting so yes that idea can go to bed in my mind.
I’d like a ‘thumbs down’ option. I’m thick skinned enough to NOT get upset just because someone doesn’t/didn’t like one of my posts. I think today’s societal problems are caused by the world being full of snowflakes and by people being obliged to not really being allowed to express a contrary opinion anymore but then maybe I’m old skool.
Another issue is people lacking a jokey nature or sense of humour, make a controversial sarcastic comment and you’ve openly the flood gates of hell. Hell being the “mass report your post”. If only there was a way to tickle them through the computer screen.
The trouble is, sarcasm is very difficult to get across in text unless you know the person you're talking to, therefore people reading assume the comment is serious.
It depends on the individual. If the person in question is uptight, then no matter what you say to them, sarcastic or not, they will be defensive (sensitive people). The best approach that has gotten me through most of my adult life, fight humour with humour. If someone pokes fun, dish it back twice as hard. Maybe because I’m British, the majority of Brits don’t take everything super seriously. We take the Pxxx. It’s in our nature. Non-Brits may not grasp this concept. My American brothers are probably more custom to our sense of humour though, we introduced them to the British version of the inbetweeners.
John Cleese talked once about different types of humor and how people may or may not "get" a particular type, and how that has nothing to do with whether they have a sense of humor, but simply whether their sense of humor is a fit for that kind of joke. His example was the Black Knight fight in Holy Grail; there are people with perfectly good senses of humor who are nonetheless repulsed by that scene, because even though they understand that it's supposed to be a joke, they just cannot find that level of violence funny. IMO, just as it's the job of a writer to clearly get their meaning across, and not the job of the reader to somehow dig it out of obfuscation masking as depth, it's the job of the one telling a joke to make that clear. If I'm poking fun at someone and it doesn't land as a joke, that's on me, not them.
Personally, I often use emojis to support my points, especially since I'm not a native English speaker. I too agree with Demosthenes when he says that if a message hasn't been delivered, it's the sender's fault. However, techniques like irony rely on trusting in the intelligence of others. It's quite an art !
We have enough negativity to go around here so I don’t think we need the downvote button. We do need a laugh emoji though. Plus I personally enjoy reading the rant responses. Don’t take that enjoyment away from me!
This I would disagree with. There shouldnt be a "penalty" for being simply unpopular. I can see why THAT abused functionality would be a big issue. A simple "thumbs down" that doesn't do anything else wouldn't be an issue though.
Gifs are better than downvotes. They are more amusing, and you don't trash or abuse another users account by spamming them with downvotes, so everybody wins in the end.
The forum would end up like that episode of Orville; members would have to start going on apology tours if they got down-voted enough lol.
