Think that’s only possible with the full PC editor.

not sure if you can spawn locos and stuff on consoles, but on pc if i fancy something different ill spawn a consist in a siding then open the map and create a route that way, you miss out on the stations being marked, but if you know the route you can still stop there, I've been using that method to run the 90 (really wish we had the DVT) and a rake of mk3s on WCMLos, and if you do this within timetable mode (as in spawn on foot) you at least get other traffic so It's not just an empty route.

The scenario planner is based on you building a timetable for your scenario so that is worth a look if you have not already tried it out.

I wish I could spawn a train in timetable mode and set a proper schedule (minus timings, obviously) rather than just saying go from location a to location b

This is how I’ve done it. You can’t do a full timetable for the whole day, but you can get a decent amount in there as long as you start them at different stations since it’s happening at one point and time. Just note that I don’t believe you can send them portal out, so they end up getting backed up at the end of the line if it isn’t a large station with a bunch of tracks.

You can send trains to portals if the portals have been made available to use

To be fair, spawning a train in timetable mode and driving it does mean you don't have to bother with setting up AI

On the other hand, if you use Scenario Planner, limited though it is, at least you still get AP for the route and chosen train.

Really what's needed is a fusion of SP and Free Roam, or even similar to TSC, where you can set up your Quick Drive and the game then generates random AI around your player train.
