People don't want the game to flop, but there's a fear it might if Dovetail doesn't deliver more content. We haven't received any word on when new content will arrive. While more is expected, no schedule or timeline for character releases has been provided. Players want this game to succeed, but if Dovetail doesn't deliver more, it risks failure as players may get bored and the hype could die down.
I agree with the wanting to see a content schedule, even if it was oh next dlc in q3 or whatever that would be helpful. However, a lot of the comments on this thread has just been moaning and putting the game down for the sake of it, with no feedback or suggestions of what they want.
This is exactly what I mean. I know there are plenty that want it to succeed. Most of those people are not posting in this thread. So far people have said 85%+ positive rating doesn’t actually mean it’s well rated (even though it’s over 700 reviews), low steam player numbers at one time mean nobody is playing it on console, and despite the game having just been released the lack of immediate planned DLC means the game is being ignored. I get the 3rd one since DTG posts updates for TSW (which many here complain about as well), but the other 2 are nothing more than just asking the game to be a flop.
tracking people who have unlocked the The Adventure Begins achievement/trophy (for completing the tutorial) on True achievements/trophies
So 2 things to think about with WOS. 1. Unlike the real world which has thousands upon thousands of miles of railway track and different routes, and thousands of locomotives and rolling stock that DTG make into packs. WOS in comparison has an extremely limited number of DLCs due to it only being one IP. So wont have as intensive a release schedule as TSW 2. WOS although it has an older fan base who want to enjoy it for the nostalgia, should be looked at as a gateway to TSW for a new generation of railway fans.
Right. That’ll explain why it’s so far off then because those numbers are very low. True Achievements won’t be seeing all players and not all players play the tutorial and get the achievement for it. I didn’t play the tutorial when I bought the game. I actually watched a video of someone else doing the tutorial and only because I had trouble figuring out what the controls were doing because they aren’t like TSW controls! I can offer a better estimate for Playstation player numbers. There are currently 453 ratings for WoS on the PS Store and it’s currently growing at around 5 new ratings per day. It’s generally accepted that usually only about 2% of players who buy a game will leave a rating so that would point towards there being around 22,500 players who have bought the game on Playstation. That won’t be an accurate number, just a ballpark estimate. It could be half that or double that if a higher or lower percentage of players left a rating for this particular game. I wouldn’t care to guess if it’s higher or lower myself.
you know that "24Hr" timetable ... is nothing more than just a oversized Model train set where you move a goods set from A to B maybe shunt it split it up move it about the yard ... only to come back 3 hours later to take it back to where it came to gess what ... another shunting puzzle with the same Six waggons ....
I find that strange. I understand the frustration of wanting more content and getting no updates, but constantly complaining is irritating to those with compassion and patience for the game. As someone who wants this game to succeed and get more characters, I understand why people would have a little bit of a doubt if content isn't delivered. I wish people would suggest ideas instead of just complaining, as I know Dovetail is trying and has a lot on its plate. Personally, I'm desperate for more content, but I won't put the game down.
I get the feeling this game had some pretty obvious red flags that a lot of people overlooked. The biggest one was the steep price tag for a game that launched with only five engines and two routes. On top of that, James being locked behind a paywall still bothers me even two months later. I probably should’ve paid more attention to that before buying it, but at this point I already own the game, so I just have to live with it. Now that the game has been out for two months, it honestly feels like it could go either way. It could continue building momentum and become a success, or it could slowly fade into a flop. Like you said, the game survives because of its gameplay and immersive world, but a huge part of the community is also hanging on to the hope that more characters and content will eventually arrive. I do think more characters are likely coming, but the bigger question is when. I also think you made the right choice by holding off on buying it for now. As someone who already owns the game, it can feel pretty lifeless at times. The railway lacks a lot of industrial activity, and there isn’t much engine traffic since you’re usually only running one engine unless you’re playing timetable mode. Free mode also feels restrictive because you constantly have to set paths, and the signaling system gets tedious really quickly. And like you mentioned before, the timetable mode lacks variety too. Most of the runs are just passenger and coach services, with very little freight or goods work to mix things up. At this point, the future of the game really depends on Dovetail. All we can do is wait and see whether they continue supporting it as a major project and keep expanding it, or if they eventually stop putting effort into it and let it die out.
Yeah, I get why that’s frustrating. Forums only work when people are actually active, and when the Discord was your main way of getting answers, getting banned basically cuts you off from the only real communication channel. From your perspective, you were pushing for transparency; from theirs, they probably saw it as disruptive. At this point, friending Jamie was probably the best move, but if he hasn’t responded yet, all you can really do is wait and hope they eventually reconsider. Right now it does kind of leave you stuck in limbo.
Yeah, forums in general have kind of fallen off. Most discussion now happens on faster-moving platforms like Discord, Twitter, or Instagram, so when a forum goes quiet it can feel like the whole community vanished even if people are still around elsewhere. And honestly, your concern makes sense. If it really takes 6–12 months per character, that’s a pretty rough pace for a game that already launched feeling light on content. Especially when players are still waiting on bug fixes and more branch lines. Holding off until the game feels more complete is probably the smart move right now. Hopefully they can at least get a steady stream of updates out before the end of the year so people feel like the game actually has momentum.
same but for saying Bruno wasn’t a positive [in response to name something good about aeg] and identity politics should stay out of Thomas ♂️ did see a rumour that they were gonna announce the first dlc on the PlayStation direct on 2nd June but take that with a pinch of salt
Ohh, that’s crazy! They got you too, huh? It’s alright, man — we’re in this together. I feel like we're just too outspoken for Dovetail to handle us, and so they just gave us the boot. Or the mods are kind of sensitive. But I'm not trying to shade anyone, so let's just go with the former rather than the latter. I hadn’t heard that rumor either, and while I’m taking it with a grain of salt, with June so close it honestly feels like a breath of fresh air. After two months of waiting, it finally feels like we might actually be getting something.
Yeah, as exciting as it sounds, I’m still skeptical. Maybe I just don’t know enough about how Dovetail Games handles things, but I feel like they would’ve announced something by now if the rumor were true. And even if they simply forgot to mention it, I’m still going to approach it cautiously until we get official confirmation. It is a cool idea, though, especially since it’s been two months since launch and the community has made it very clear that we want a lot more content and variety. I’d like to think Dovetail is listening to the feedback, but we really won’t know until they show us what’s next
Some people think a new indie Japanese train sim (Running Train) is going to kill all other train sims because of how pretty it looks. There are a couple of threads about it on the TSW forum. They think Dovetail should be quaking in their boots because of one fictional Japanese route developed by a single person in UE5. They won’t be. It’s PC only as well.
That’s ridiculous. One game from one developer isn’t going to wipe out every other train sim game. Do I think it could be a wake-up call for Dovetail? Absolutely. My main focus is the Thomas & Friends game, and I just want Dovetail to make it the best experience possible because right now it still feels rocky. Still, I’m glad you told me about this game since I’d never heard of it before. I just think it’s crazy that people are acting like it’s going to destroy the entire train simulator genre.
I wouldn't say destroy it no but it's a shot across the bow in my opinion, I've seen nothing but praise for it
This should really be a wake-up call for Dovetail Games. Wonders of Sodor has brought them a ton of attention from fans who normally wouldn’t care about their other games. So seeing another train game get praised while this one struggles with bugs should push Dovetail to seriously lock in, improve the game, and support it properly before they lose momentum for good.
Have posted on another thread, but I am in the group you mention, never heard of dovetail, train sim sounded cool but never took the plunge. Thomas mad as a kid (only familiar with the first 3 series), so this was a nostalgic must buy in my late 30s. I will now likely purchase one of the core TSWs at some point. Have enjoyed the game, but have now done everything, and as you say, the game needs filling out to keep the momentum up. I'm hopeful of new content, but a bit concerned from the noises on here.
I feel the exact same way. For years, I saw Train Sim World videos on YouTube, but never paid much attention to them. That changed when Dovetail Games released an officially licensed Thomas game backed by Mattel. Seeing YouTubers play it made it feel like a huge moment for the fandom, so I had to try it myself. But honestly, I’ve held off on getting to the missions and stories because the lack of content so far has been underwhelming. I have played around with Free Roam mode, but really on the times when I was super bored. A lot of people on the forums feel the same way. The silence over the past two months has started to worry fans, especially since people want reassurance that the game actually has a future. If updates stay slow and communication remains quiet, many fear the game could lose momentum and end up being a major disappointment for both Dovetail and the Thomas fandom.
