Class 40s are (apart from class 55) the best-sounding diesel-electrics (I specify electrics because diesel-hydraulics are also hellfire), and were most certainly not 'withdrawn early' but lasted a good 25 years in BR service. For the purposes of JT's 1986 routes, they could be resurrected as 97405–97408 running engineering, ballast, freight and parcels trains around the north-west.
Yes that would be to see. I know I have moaned a bit about the class 40 appearing. I think it is a good compromise having as driveable but not appearing as AI traffic. Although even I didn't mind seeing it on occasions. I would love a TOD4 route where you could drive them realistically but we don't currently have one.
Ooh that's fightin' talk , but I was fortunate enough to have witnessed the twilight years of the Deltics, and their 'platform presence' was something to behold. I do believe JT missed an opportunity opting for 1986, as the 70s would have been so much more interesting in terms of diesel thrash worship.
Actually, Sulzer Type 2’s were the best sounding UK classic diesel, especially a single Class 26 dragging 8 coaches up from Altnabreac to County March Summit!
Hmmm… I took a walk up to the works today and all the 40s were well and truly dead. Sad, but realistic, at least on my PC
