I hope the mods will permit this, as it is of general interest particularly to old holdouts like me who are still running Windows 10 on older hardware. I had an email the other evening from MS to the effect, they recognise the current difficulties in the hardware market may be causing those who wish to upgrade or replace their PC to be compatible with Windows 11. Consequently, they have extended the life whereby Windows 10 will receive essential security updates by another year, until October 2027. So unless you really want to, no need to rush out this autumn and pay the current extortionate prices to upgrade your hardware. Kind if hoping they will repeat the process again next year, unless the hardware situation improves drastically. So the old potato lives on. The only concessions I might make are a slightly better video card and some additional storage space - ideally I want to get a SSD and make that the C: drive which will then free up a 1Tb spinner for more storage.
No plans to upgrade my PC to W11 even after the deadline. I have W11 on my laptop and I genuinely despise using it.
Out of interest, why? I'm using Windows 11 and after a little customisation I see no issues with it. I'm sure it's been told to me before but I have a poor memory.
The whole story about Windows 11 having “bugs” is also nine out of ten times caused by the user themselves. I’ve had Windows 11 from day one in the beta and I rarely have any issues. It was no different with Windows 10, and many people trashed it as well… I mean its a pattern you know.... Now Windows 11 is here and the exact same thing happens again.The problem is that people simply like to repeat this kind of bar‑talk without actually knowing the real story. I’m not denying that issues exist, but certainly not to the extent of all the drama being described.
For me it's just slow and clunky. Bearing in mind my W11 laptop has much better specs than my W10 PC (which was a budget pc back in the late 10s, probably poverty spec in 2026). Also it doesn't look as nice.
For me it's how user-hostile they keep making it. It gets less and less reliable, secure, and easy to use as they deprecate more and more legacy features I am constantly mucking about in the weeds of. W10 all the stuff I use day to day is still at least there, just hidden away, but can be accessed and reimplemented into things like the context menu, as opposed to just being removed from W11's backend. It was not an enjoyable experience turning Win10 into a fully functioning facsimile of Win7. But it was at least possible.
can be frustrating if you like the old ways or are stuck in it and refuse to do a upgrade because it can be time consuming too happens with each new windows version i did hold off on windows 11 upgrade for a year but never regretted upgrading to it
I'm looking forward to steamOS full compat with nvidia GPUs (since my GPU is a nvidia one) so I can tell microsoft and windows 11 to go **** themselves
