New Jt Route Cumbrian Coast: Carlisle - Whitehaven From Just Trains

one that sticks in my mind was a 101 in white and blue stripe livery one sat on the blackpool run, we hopped on heading to the pleasure beach in summer i think it was only a 2 car set, but cant be 100% sure.

 

The 101 would be fine for trains crossing the Pennines but there were very few allocated around Manchester in 1986. Chester had some.

 

I don't know if the 108 sounds like the 101, but I hope some of the sounds get ported over to the 101.

 

Yes, they used to go down the coast a fair bit.

 

No doubt! The map I saw showed that particular mine/brickworks with some sidings, so I made the leap from that clue. And of course, the large number of mine workings in West Cumbria is a big part of why the Bransty tunnel is currently out of use...

 

The 108’s having BUT rather than AEC engines did sound different to the 101’s, though the current 101 in TSW doesn’t really sound like either. The MetCams had a fairly distinctive and sonorous “whine” under power, though the Class 105 Cravens, and Class 119/120 that were fitted with AEC engines not so much. The BUT engine sets were a bit more growly, though nowhere near as harsh as the Cummins engines fitted to the first Gen Sprinters. Just to complicate matters, towards the end of their lives some of the 101’s were re-engined with Leyland motors to replace the AEC ones.

So long as JT have sourced the sounds from a real 108, of which plenty are preserved, we should be okay.

 

That's the intention and the reason we're doing both destination variants.

Ahhhh that 108 with headcode box, I've never felt such feelings towards a DMU before...

Existing routes… But I’m still hoping JT will dust off their failed Highland Main Line project for TSC, revert it a few years and give us double headed McRats over Drumochter and Schlod Summits!

25s are awesome, I'd love one in TSW They'd obviously be right at home on Preston/Crewe given how many resided at Springs Branch... Would be nice to have an 1980s North Wales Coast to give them a good stretch out on though

 

25s and mk3 sleepers. And some speedlink wagons.....

 

BUT (British United Traction) was a joint venture between Leyland and AEC to produce trolleybus and railcar equipment. There were no BUT engines per se, either Leyland O.680 or AEC 220 engines were used on most, but not all, 1st Gen BR DMUs. It would be more accurate to say the 108s had Leyland engines not BUT. The design of the exhaust system had some influence on the sound as well as the engine type.

 

Appreciate the in depth information. I was going by my 1978 Ian Allan Combined Volume! And yes the exhaust certainly made a difference as epitomised by the Swindon Class 120’s which had the AEC engines but the infamous “farting” exhaust on pullaway and definitely more growling and less whiny than the 101’s.Especially, on the Central Wales Line climbing out of Knighton or to Sugar Loaf Summit from Cynghordy.

25/9s would fit right in at Kingmoor in 1986 too…

 

The JT website mentions that new wagons will come with the route.

("New wagons, with freight and shunting operations across the route")

I see quite a lot of freight workings hauling MGR wagons (HAA? I think the HAA and HEA are coming with the route) and one photo at Workington with the BBA which we have in TSW.

This photo looks interesting though, I think there are one or two wagons we don't have in TSW but I cannot really identify wagons well.

I'd expect a new batch of MGR wagons for Preston-Crewe given how MGR operations are going to be a large part of the route, as for Workington, yes I'd reckon that they'd include wagons for Continuously Welded Rail given that's where the stuff is made

 

As well as long welded rail wagons some speedlink vans are visible on the left. They are another major missing type from any of the TSW routes up until the 90s.

 

Yes. Definitely VDA on the left. Really need some type of Speedlink wagons. Covhop in there too, but I’m not sure what traffic went along there for them, or could they just be stored.

 

I'm a bit puzzled with the Speedlink vans, aren't they already in TSW? I'm sure I've shunted them around Kingmoor on a Gronk timetable.

I think they may have come from WCL and are reskinned perhaps? Might not be WCL (that's certainly where the engineering flat wagons are from though), could they be older say Peak Forest wagons that had been reskinned?

Regardless, yes we need Speedlink vans and more wagons in general.

 

The vans in Kingmoor are four wheeled Vac Braked vans. Speedlink did use an air brake version of these vans (VEA). There was a large amount of Vans built for Speedlink work VDA, VBA, VCA then there is larger VGA vans and Cargowaggons also. None of which are in TSW as the DLC for suitable eras stopped being produced.

 

Workington had a docks as well as the Rail making plant. Also Corkickle further down the line had chemical traffic in various types of wagon. Workington was a bit of a hub for it all.

 

Don't forget RNAD Broughton Moor.
They definitely used Speedlink vans!!

The new 108 looks great.

However from what I recall all the 108's on the Cumbrian Coast route were power trailer sets formed DMBS/DTCL. It looked like what would be the DTCL has engines which makes it a power twin set. It wouldn't be absolute deal breaker but I believe it may be inaccurate. I could be wrong but my platform 5 book seems to show just power trailer sets at Kingnoor.

 

Definitely loved the 108 model and the screenshots looked very good too!
Excited to see more with this route, especially on the freight side!

I was watching a video of Crewe from February 1986 and a class 58 came through on a MGR train. I would take a 56 over a 58 though.

Really is looking fantastic, and will also make a useful stand in for other DMU classes on the NTP remaster when that comes out too.

 

Would have liked a wee glimpse at Whitehaven to whet my appetite even more (though one of the pics is a train heading North on the way out towards Parton, by Bransty hill), but can't be love what I'm seeing.

This is what I will be saving my Steam credit towards!

 

I was trying to work out why the 108 model looked off then I realised it was the windows.

The frames seem to be black and look like large single windows from a distance. Looking at images from BR days the window frames are grey or silver so the sliding parts are easily visible.

I did find some images of a preserved unit with dark frames and that also looks weird so is that where the model’s look has come from?

Or a Class 60! The “Bones” tended to be very restricted on usage compared to the more ubiquitous 56. And while it’s a long time since I heard one under power, I don’t think they had quite the thrash of a 56 screaming and thumping away under full power.

Part of me hopes after Cumbrian Coast, JT look at doing a network route around Knottingley @1990 which would be the ideal stamping ground for a new 56 with all the collieries and power stations. You can do it, JT!

So I'm going to be bit of a misery here.

The screenshots look incredible, especially the lighting.

But I want to see how the lighting will look for us Console players. How different it'll be for us mere plebs.
