With a length of 33 miles, the line between Crewe and Shrewsbury is the northern portion of the Welsh Marches line, and has 8 stations along its journey as well as the freight yard near Shrewsbury at Coton Hill and passing by the DRS and LSL depots at Crewe. Passenger service on this line is provided exclusively by Transport for Wales.

    Proposed rolling stock
    • Class 67 in Transport for Wales Black & White livery upload_2026-9-5_9-22-39.png upload_2026-9-5_9-25-4.png
The TfW class 67 is very multicolured, with variants of Chiltern, DB and Royal Train having worked their Mk4 sets previously. The most common of these 2 liveries are the 2 TfW ones. The Mk4 sets operate in 5 coach formation for TfW, and mostly operate on Cardiff - Manchester diagrams, although they do stil occasionally appear on Cardiff - Holyhead workings.
    • Class 197 in Transport for Wales livery upload_2026-9-5_9-35-38.png
The class 197s operate the bulk of services along this route, with them having recently taken over the Crewe - Shrewsbury local services as well as all the Welsh Marches workings that start/end beyond Cardiff.

    Layers:
    Cardiff City Network:
The class 150 and 153s operate the Heart of Wales line (AI traffic at Shrewsbury) as well as regularly substituting for 197s on the Crewe - Shrewsbury local service

Birmingham to Crewe: Class 350s provide AI traffic at Crewe
Blackpool Branches: Static stock on LSL depot (47 & 142) as well as locos for Crewe - Shrewsbury LSL test runs and LSL Statesman
Preston to Carlisle: Static stock on LSL depot (87+Mk3s)
Midland Main Line: AI traffic at Crewe (158) and static stock on LSL depot (HST)
Class 220: AI traffic at Crewe
Class 390: AI traffic at Crewe
Class 86/2: Static stock on LSL depot (86+Mk2s) as well as coaches for LSL services (Mk2F+Mk1)
Class 805: AI traffic at Crewe

is this some kind of diesel push-pull or just the loco pulling coaches?

Those are push pull consists that TFW bought off Chiltern Railways I think... when Chiltern got a hold of their first 68s

Nice call but scenery is flat as a pancake. Shrewsbury to Hereford or Hereford to Newport even preferably Newport to Shrewsbury would give a much nicer Marches experience.
