Yesterday I had a run on the ECML in the LNER. After a while I spotted blurry textures on this train, from a distance it was ok, but coming more close with the camera the textures where not loading in properly. At my destination at Peterborough, also the Class 700 and Class 158 had blurry textures.

I actually can't remember seeing posts of people having blurry textures on this route, other the reports after the GWR livery was released. Today I disabled all the GWE layers, freight and static stock (166 at Doncaster) and the blurry textures where gone.

So why do suspect GWE? Before the GWE remaster came out, there where no blurry textures on the Riviera Line, but after the release of the remaster, people start complaining about blurry textures. Also the GWE route itself is suffering from blurry textures. After release I had only SEHS for some extra freight, IL 2022 for the 484 and WCML south for the Class 350 and underground stock and I had already blurry textures. Removing the WCML south layers solved the issue, but there where already not that many different trains on this route at all.

One of the possible causes is the fact there are 2 liveries for for both the HST and Class 166. Another possibly cause can be the trains of GWE are heavy on the memory usage after they got updated. On ECML you mostly see the freight from GWE, but also the Class 166 has to be loaded in. My next test will be with the GWE freight layer enabled on ECML.

Sadly, there is no way to disable the 1st GW liveries, so no way to test if on having only the green livery helps.

What do you think, does my theory make sense?

ECML definitely had blurring before the GWE remaster, for TSW4 it was my most played route to the point that it became my most used on my profile, and that’s a profile I’ve had since TSW2, so it would have been a significant level of playtime. Not once did I have blur issues even with all layers, I did all types of services from the 800, to freight, railtours, 158 & even 700 shunting. I went back to it at some point during TSW5 & the first LNER 80X I came across out of Pborough was blurry.

As for riviera I think the blurring there comes from the HST railtour pack. But on GWE remaster it was indeed blurry so I imagine the stock layering elsewhere is an issue too, similar to the 350’s that are a menace.

I didn't know the ECML had already blurry textures in the TSW5 era, 1 added feature is coming to mind, suspension.
I believe I saw already complaints about the blurry textures on Riviera line before the release of the HST pack, but that pack will not help for sure. I had to disable the 350 on GWE, to get rid of the blurry textures, so yes, that looks like another offender.

Yeah someone made a pretty strong case for blurryness being linked to suspension, which does coincide with ECML being fine through TSW4, obviously not getting suspension until it’s very last update.

Given the last cause Matt presented, that trains were being kept in memory when they weren’t needed, it does make sense that a heavy feature such as suspension would make memory footprints much larger, but I’m pretty sure AI don’t get suspension, along with many other physics?

In any case there are definitely some trains worse than others, 350s though I’m convinced are the worst in the game. B2C can’t handle all layers off other than 350’s, but if you turn off all the 350 layers, then every other layer is active, you don’t get blur. You could make the case that there is a lot of 350’s, but I don’t really believe they can outsize 220’s, 170’s, 390’s, 150’s, 153’s & 323’s. I don’t know what the situation with the 805 TT is though.

Anyways that’s moving quite far from your topic, but in general I think there are certainly some worse than others when it comes to trains causing memory issues, and whilst you’d think it would be the long, multi car intercity units, in my experience it’s been the smaller stock. I wonder if it’s because devs are actually careful with the bigger trains’ memory footprint, but are much less cautious with the smaller stuff.

Certainly looking over my own & others’ experience, I’d turn off any layers that link back to the GWE remaster.

I've definitely had blurry textures on Riviera without the HST pack. In fact I haven't bought the pack because Riviera and GWE is so blurry but I do have most layers (not all). Layers wise I haven't played much GWE because of the blurring issues since the remaster. Hoping NTP won't follow the same road!

Well, I think we can speak about every possible cause of blurry textures, I won't see it as off topic.

I'm not sure if AI trains are lacking suspension, because if you take over a service, there is suspension. Those AI trains are actually the same trains as the trains you drive and even static stock is the same.

The 350 issue on B2C is strange, because a 350 is a 350, so you should expect only one in memory, except when there are different liveries involved.

Another big offender are substitutions and lack of some substitution management like you can with layer. For UK routes, it's not really a big issue when you disable substitutions, as the Class 66 is one of the only substitution and that for only a different livery. On the German side, you gonna miss a lot when you disable substitutions and I'm not meaning all the red BR185's.

I also have disabled the GWE layers on multiple routes, I think they're only active on SEHS and Glossop Line. But it's kind of sad, I'm now missing a green 166 on Riviera Line, as it really belongs on there.

    Same here.

Pretty sure that the two issues causing blurries are the textures on the trains which Matt has said exceed Epics recommendations for the engine (can't believe how dumb this is)

The other are the trains being retained in memory to get round the problem of hitching on gen 8 consoles when loading in a train.

The difference people see if blurry textures appear on any route comes down to just how many trains you pass on the journey and if any of they trains have stupid textures on it

All remastered timetables seem to cause blurring and ruin the route for console.

The 380 timetable, updated Fife timetable the 170 timetable on BCC, SKA remaster, GWE remaster.

I'm already expecting the Class 70 timetable for MML to break the route and yes NTP with TOD4 remaster as well if they add more traffic or layers.

Until DTG figure out how to get VRAM freed up this will just continue to get worse the more layers are added to a timetable just increases the amount of VRAM used.

Even if they were to solve the unloading trains issue we would still see blurry textures at busy stations as all the different layers would need to be loaded.

And still the only solution that seems to work is to remove layers all the time.

Like Stamford. If I depart from GCT in an M8 during peak time I get a CTD. But if I remove the NJ Transit and LIRR layers which I won't see anyways it works.

If I depart from Penn station I keep those layers on and get blurry textures in the tunnel departing Penn. But if I remove the M3A and M7A layers no blurries.

So obviously the tiles for GCT and Penn load at the same time. And removing a passed train from VRAM still won't solve this issue on Stamford.

I'm resigned to the fact that the only way they can fix blurry textures on consoles is to increase the VRAM size which cannot be done. So it is impossible.

And until consoles add more VRAM there will be nothing DTG can do.

Did you also have blurry textures before the release of GWE remaster, or didn't you play Riviera line before the remaster? To be honest, the latest remasters are leaving a bad taste in the mouth. GWE is nicely done for sure, but the blurry textures are ruining it and I'm also not a big fan of the unlicensed 1st GW livery and the incorrect 484 and 350. SKA is just bad, they ruined the route and with the new timetable, it's one big blurry fest. I don't own the East Coastway, so can't tell much about the state of that one.

Yeah Matt has said previously that once a train loads, duplicates are minimal & if trains are kept in memory regardless of where they are, I don’t see how more 350’s can present so much more of an issue. DTG’s 350 did have a major performance problem when it released & they had to patch it, you can probably still find the update notes in the announcement forum. I don’t know if AAS have a similar issue there, but according to them the 350 isn’t an issue - however the gameplay says otherwise.

Disabling substitutions is a shame & id be surprised if it really achieves much, but with German content I think it’s hopeless so I just don’t bother. For the UK side it really is a shame as many layers are specific types of stock, since there isn’t a statewide operator.

Indeed, also the timetable updates on the named routes are giving trouble. But until TSW5, blurry textures where not really an issue, so what has changed and is causing this big issue? DTG needs to go back to TSW4 and compare what is now using so much more memory.

I also doubt if this can be resolved, or if they really want to spend that much time an effort on it. Seeing the post on this forum about TSW7, there are already reports of blurry textures without any layer. So after playing without layers, we not have to disable trains coming with the route.....

Matt confirmed, substitutions are a cause. How many DB 185's and Railion 185's are there now in game? They look the same, but those are all different trains, go figure. But I can't disable substitutions, because the I also won't see Vectrons and BR 155's for example.

Yeah I think the only way to do it would be to delete routes that add duplicate locos, but given how many times we’ve had things like a 185, you’ll likely end up deleting the layers there in the first place.

What I don’t get is they understand at least part of the issue with the texturing thing, so they should at least be in control of that? But like you say there are already instances of blurring on the new routes & it’s impossible to layer into them right now. I suspect the coming week will have a good amount of complaints once people can install all their content.

I said it elsewhere too but JT seemed to have instantly solved the problem on their latest route & that has a lot going on, with rolling stock that isn’t what you’d call low quality. Surely DTG would want to know how they did it & would be doing it with all new content, at the very least.

I think we have to accept that there will always be a chance of seeing blurry textures as that is a natural function of the Unreal Engine under heavy loads. This though should be temporary.

However it's the level of blurry textures and that there comes a point where the blurring becomes permanent that is the issue.

I think we may have a slim chance that they get to a better place now gen 8 has been ditched (so out goes the old tech designed for mechanical drives) and that DTG are actually a bit more forthcoming with the info recently (possibly revealed in error)

However I do think the biggest issue is DTG themselves. I have a feeling that TSW sales have dropped, coupled with that it look like Thomas Tanked and Metro was cancelled, we may very well have a DTG that staffing wise are not up to the task either in numbers or in competence

I’m surprised it seemingly hasn’t appeared on PC, I wouldn’t have put it past anyone to be using 8GBram with a 4GB card. Still though at least we can speculate the issue doesn’t exist around the level of 24gb, or perhaps even 20. Since gen10 machines should release with at least that much - don’t get me wrong though that’s not the solution we should depend on, DTG knew (or should have but it wouldn’t surprise me) what they were getting into with console development & steps should have been taken from the get go.

Even then though I’d struggle to think of any devs straight up using 4k textures in console games, it’s pretty silly to attempt it. Then again we are talking about a developer who has only just implemented upscalers for PC. On the other end of the scale DTG manages to make 1080p look so incredibly poor, but even when I tried switching to that back when Frankfurt-Fulda came, you could still clearly see the issue existed even there.

In any case it seems we’re waiting until December for DTG to even attempt anything, so I just hope the Leeds line can run fully layered without the problem, but given the Xbox stream showed it happening, I’m very worried what will happen once the 158 & 70 come along.

Good point about about GEN8 and mechanical drives gone. They now load the whole timetable in to memory and I'm wondering if it's possible to just read the timetable from SSD. On one of the streams they mentioned timetables over 1GB, so not loading it into memory saves a lot.

And their decisions confuse me. If they are concened about memory on consoles why is the DB403 layer in the Nuremburg to Wurzburg using the Nurn to Inglostadt one since it has a bigger memory footprint than the KWG one?

Possibly to increase the sale of the Nuremberg - Inglostadt route. On the other hand, they still add more stuff to the game, like live weather and the guard mode and now the door closing by the guard. I don't care for live weather, it really don't add anything interesting for me. The guard thing I can understand, as it add more realism to the game, but when it's causing trouble, well then I prefer they left it out.

Are you sure about this. It would just be surprising as I was under the impression it only hit about 30k on steam leaving it well short of TSW6 sales

Do you have a link by any chance? Just to be clear, I do not doubt you. I would just find it an interesting read

TTE probably has a much wider audience it appeals to, rather than rail simulation - the problem they likely had with that is you can’t come up with & then sell that audience a £30 DLC every 8-12 weeks.

Even if TTE was successful in its own right, you can’t really scale that to TSW’s success. As much as I suspect DTG would have liked to.

Metro Rivals however was just an insanely stupid idea, I’m surprised it got off the ground at all. Then again Pull-up tried to do something similar with the Mudrunner franchise, with multiple spin offs such as Expeditions, Roadcraft & Docked. None of those really landed though so they’re back to Snowrunner development & remastering MudRunner.
