I'm sorry if this has been answered before but I tried Googling and searching here and couldn't find anything. The graphical settings guide (VERY useful, by the way) doesn't specify which graphics cards are compatible with DLSS. I have seen threads about DLSS 5 that look amazing but I know that I have no hope of getting that image quality because I have an RTX 3070 Laptop GPU and I've read on here that DLSS 5 only works on 50-series cards (at least, officially). So with my 3070 Laptop, can I use the DLSS setting? If yes, what number DLSS will it be (I assume 3 but I don't know what 3 means or looks like)? I'm going to download TSW7 over the weekend so it's entirely possible that I just won't be allowed to select it and then my questions will be answered...
DLSS 4.5 is simply available, but don’t expect miracles from it. It’s an older card after all, but you do get 4.5. NVIDIA also supports the RTX 3000 series with it.
On the Nvidia app you can change which preset DLSS uses for the game too. Preset K gives you DLSS 4 which still looks great but is a little less demanding and might be worth exploring. Presets L and M are DLSS 4.5, IIRC M probably gives the best image quality but is marginally more demanding than L
Thank you very much for the info! I've found an Nvidia app (called Nvidia Control Panel) and I tried to find the DLSS setting by adding TSW6 (haven't installed TSW7 yet - that comes soon) but I couldn't find it. Am I looking in the right place? I've also found an Nvidia GeForce Experience app on my laptop but that requires an account and I really don't want to make one if possible so I haven't ventured down there.
You need to use the NVIDIA app, and once TSW7 has been added you have to manually add the .exe yourself. After that you can configure DLSS, but make sure to activate it in‑game first, otherwise DLSS won’t work at all. The NVIDIA Control Panel and GeForce Experience are no longer needed and are no longer available through the usual channels. The NVIDIA app is now the application you use.
DLSS 1: Convolutional network with spatial upscaling. Originally released for RTX 20-series cards. Criticised for being a bit shimmery. Upsamples from a lower resolution to give better FPS at a cost of image quality. DLSS 2: Added a temporal element. Introduced DLAA where the base resolution can be set to 100% native to effectively supersample by upscaling beyond the monitor's resolution. DLSS 3: Added frame interpolation allowing generation of additional interpolated frames. Doubling FPS.Uses the optical flow accelerator present in RTX 40-series cards. The 3.5 release also added ray reconstruction for games which include path tracing. DLSS 4: Replaced the convolutional model with a transformer model for all RTX Cards. Introduced 4x multi-frame framegen for 50-series cards, increasing the number of generated frames to exceed the number of actual rendered frames at a cost of further increased input latency. The 4.5 update increased this limit to 6x. DLSS 4.5's upgraded transformer model's upscaling performs poorer on RTX 20 and 30 series cards due to the increased compute cost of the upgrades. DLSS 5: Adds an additional neural rendering overlay akin to something like Reshade, which paints over the scene using a generative model. Available for 50-series cards. Where it's possible to mod DLSS versions into older generation cards which do not possess the intended hardware, YMMV as the demands will mean poorer performance.
Thank you for this - beautiful summary! Right. Thank you for that. I'm installing the Nvidia app from their website now. Thanks for all your help everyone!
Hi Jetwash , Out of interest which settings would you recommend for a rtx5080 and i9 processor ? I tried nvdia smooth motion with DLSS , but not getting the best results. Saw more artifacts and strange blurring of trains , unless I set it up wrong .To to be honest everything was great without it with everthing on epic, computer is not really working too hard , so maybe I don’t need it ? Was just interested from the point of view of lowering the load on gpu and cpu .
I have a RTX5080 and an AMD 7800x3D and i have no artifacts at all. I do use smooth motion. Do you have a new driver for you're GPU? Or maybe you have to do a fresh new install with DDU. I can say it works supurb with my 5080. I have everything on Epic settings and i use DLAA.
The artifacts were mainly shimmering of trains in the distance , which with smooth motion off and DLAA off I didn’t have . Still get fairly solid 60fps without smooth motion , but obviously gpu working a bit harder . Are you using override DLAA presets in the nvdia app ? I didn’t change that , so maybe that was the issue . Edit : did update graphics card driver yesterday to latest version .
60FPS is very normal. You can lower you're FPS and double it with smooth motion that works very good. I have set my monitor to 100hz and i maximize my fps to 50. With smooth motion i have a solid 100fps.
oh i cap mine at 60 and smooth motion did not raise it it just make it more solid the fps my monitor is 144hz and yeah i checked that it is on with the Nvidia app overlay if you cap it at 50 with Nvidia app how can smooth motion double it ? because there is a cap of 50 fps
If youre capping at 60 you should get 120 with smooth motion. If its not working then its not activated correctly somehow.
You should open the Nvidia overlay so you can actually see what’s happening. You clearly didn’t understand what smooth motion really does. You need the Nvidia FPS counter to see it properly in all its glory when you enable smooth motion, it literally doubles your frame rate.
i understand it perfectly if you cap the game at 120fps in nvidia app you get 120fps but in TSW the fps shows at 60fps with f3 so yeah it doubles compared to that but the steam fps counter does show it as 120 too
Yes, There is some confusion with this. With Smooth Motion, the set frame rate is doubled, but it depends on where that rate is set. If you cap it in game you need to set it half (if you want 60 fps total you need set 30 in game settings), but if you cap it on Nvidia App you need to set the total amount wanted (unlimited in game settings and 60 in Nvidia App to get 60 fps). If you set 30 in Nvidia App with smooth motion active you get 30 in game (and f3 will show 15 fps). Nvidia App sets the total amount, It will internally do what is necessary to achieve that total, depending on whether Smooth Motion is enabled or not.
No need to cap it in nvidia, cap it in game at 60, turn smooth motion on and 120 in game is what you get. Turn v sync on in nvidia and off in game.
Yeah he is right better you use vsync instead of limiting your'e fps. With vsync it will never go over your'e refresh rate of the monitor. It will work also when smooth motion is active.
