So I already have the LIRR Commuter Route downloaded in the game which goes to Hempstead, Hicksville, New York Penn and so forth. But can someone please explain this other LIRR: New York-Hickville route, which also goes to Hempstead, Hicksville and New York Penn? Is this any different? Are they basically stopping at the same locations/stations? The route descriptions sound the same to me.

It's just an older version of the same route, but without the lines to Long Beach. So there's no need to buy the first one. Kind of the same as with Dresden - Riesa and Leipzig - Dresden.

The Commuter version is the remaster. Updated lighting, additional stations, new rolling stock.

I don't know if this is still the case, but the LIRR layer for New York - Trenton came from LIRR1 rather than LIRR2 (As NYT released prior to LIRR2). I always had to keep both installed because of this and I don't think NYT was updated to include the updated versions of the LIRR stock

Oh okay. I purchased the LIRR Commuter six months ago on a sale so did I purchase the wrong one that was a much older version? Which one was the newer version?

LIRR commuter is the newer version which includes the Long Beach branch.
The original LIRR dates back to TSW1 era

Okay cool thanks. I kept scratching my head at the fact that LIRR: New York-Hicksville rarely ever goes on sale. It pretty much stays at $29.99 US dollars while LIRR Commuter goes on sale regularly. Made me think perhaps I needed to purchase both. Why don't they remove the oldest one I wonder?

I think it has to do with LIRR layers on NYT

I might be confusing myself. So if I also have NEC NY-Tenton dowloaded, will I need to purchase Lirr NY-Hicksville for it to layer onto Trenton? Is this what you're saying?

The LIRR M3 has the original LIRR as a dependency (as they are both TSW1 content when they linked loco DLC to route DLC)

The LIRR M3 then layered onto future NY routes. It's way more convoluted than it should have been :(

So in the end, don't purchase LIRR: New York-Hicksville because it would be redundant if you already have LIRR Commuter, correct?

If you don't care about the LIRR layer for NYT (and possibly Morristown & NY-Stamford); just get LIRR Commuter

    That’s right. Don’t buy it.

The static stock on NY-Trenton is the only thing it’s needed for and it’s not worth it. Also, the M3 loco DLC, should you get that, will show up on LIRR Commuter without the need to buy the old LIRR.

Only if you want the M7's in the background, which really isn't that big a deal as others have noted.

Get the latest DLC and the M3 to go with it. Also keep in mind that safety systems on the latest DLC are going to be mandatory/on all the time, if you're not used to running with them or are averse to such.

I think the latter uses layers from the latest LIRR DLC. I may be talking out my butt, but I'm pretty sure I saw M9's out of NYP on the Stamford DLC.

    Yerolo and stujoy

Okay thanks. Because yeah I already have:
    NEC Stamford to NY
    NEC Trenton
    Harlem Line
    Lirr: Commuter
    Morristown Line

So I guess if these other Hicksville locos are already layering on these other routes then no need.

It would make sense for NY routes released after LIRR2 to use LIRR2 for the layering. I think I also recall the LIRR M3 being separated from the original LIRR so it could be layered into LIRR2 without having to have the original installed as well.

Its really only NYT which suffers from the legacy route for layering I believe

The trick is to buy a bundled version of an older TSW when THAT goes on sale for like a fiver with all the older routes from that TSW generation.

    So explain this for example...

From the attached photos, NEC NY to Trenton says I don't own an M7 and I can't select it in layers. But LIRR Commuter says I do own the M7. What gives?

Because New York-Trenton came out before the LIRR commuter remaster. The M7 that layers into it is the one from the ORIGINAL LIRR. They are different versions.

i do wonder why the original lirr is still on the store, it just seems like a bit of a cash trap. the only reason i can think of is for layers, but as its ai and static stock i don’t think it would hurt dovetail to just put in the newer versions regardless of what you own

The layer requirements are coded into the routes and generally DTG don't go back and update layers unless the route receives major updates or a remaster.

I doubt NYT will get remastered any time soon. People requested it when LIRR2 came out but nothing eventuated

Also, what about people who own the old LIRR and Trenton but not the new LIRR. It wasn't a free route update. If DTG swap the dependency, they lose that layer. Either way someone is forced to rebuy a route.

Exactly. How layering works in TSW is a bit of a mess.

If people think this is convoluted, they don't want to look at the German content layering situation.

Shouldn't there be a disclaimer somewhere on the LIRR: NY-Hicksville description page that states **If you own LIRR: Commuter you do not need to download this route**?

Don't get me started on German locos. I may or may not have purchased the same loco 10 times with a DB BR this or DB BR that.

One of the only reasons to have LIRR: NY-Hicksville is if you want the LIRR M7 to layer into New York to Trenton. That route uses the original LIRR M7 as an AI layer. For PC players, there was a mod out there a while back before it got removed. It was part of one of the updates to NYT small patches, which allowed the LIRR M7 to sub in from the LIRR Commuter route.

Yeh it probably should....another idea would be to communicate what it layers onto if they continue selling it.

There's literally no reason to buy it if you own LIRR commuter and couldn't care less about the layer for NYT.

The timetable for the original LIRR is horrendous.

Is it reasonably possible the LIRR trains would AI layer onto the upcoming Bergen Line or no?

Not unless NY Penn is included. I doubt it will be as the line runs from Hoboken

Did I dream this or did the M3 or M7 ever have on-board announcements? Seems like I remember hearing them on another train besides the M8.

The LIRR Commuter version of the M7 maybe. The M3 wouldn't as it hasn't been updated since TSW1
