Most of the track does have parallax occlusion mapping as normal, but we've removed it from some busy yard areas around Heidelberg as track work is often quite a hefty load on performance (think Liverpool Crewe...) and Heidelberg station, Engine sheds and goods yard, OEG etc in close proximity is something of a concern so we've opted to remove from certain areas it to keep the track materials as simple as possible.

Ah, okay, that's good to hear then! Thank you for the info.

Does it really have that much of a performance impact? I mean even if it's bunch of tracks around, doesn't it just render like a few meters around you regardless? I would've imagined it's negligible impact at most.

But either way it's good info to hear.

It is hard to judge how much impact, but any simplification on the material will have an impact, even the calculation for the range of POM has some degree of cost however small, multiplied up for a lot of track and it can begin to add up. How much impact it will have may also vary wildly from system to system depending on the bottleneck. We just have to try every trick at our disposal to eek out as much performance as possible really when we're presented with a challenging area.
