When Running just a pair of SD-40-2 on a train what is the correct multiple unit configuration for a front pair?
Because when I run the q115 from Cumberland to rock wood I get no fast than 12mph when the grade uphill is at 1.5%.

Ok thanks. That is how I have set the front pair up of sd40s as it’s a service that doesn’t require a helper pair.

That link is not only about DPU

The way I had set them both up is the front as lead or dead on mu valve with all 3 main engine, gen and fuel switches on and brake cut out valve and the 2 engine as trail in the leading pair which was mu trail 6/26, brake cut off valve as cut out and the 3 main switches all off. Once I got to sand patch summit on a flat area of the route I had the throttle at idle and no brakes were applied as my speed was holding or even going up on downhill segments.

This is a very heavy train for a pair of SD-40-2. I will try it.
But (theoretically, HPPT) should go without problems that %grade.

Hope you have better success than I did. When I eventually completed the service it took me around 2 and a half hours instead of usual hour and a half.

Cumberland -> Hyndman up to ~48 MPH
    Hyndman checkpoint 36 MPH

Then it starts to get steep :) And very slow. Close to ~12 MPH sometimes (most of the time?).
It is normal. A bit too weak set of locomotives for such a weight up such a hill.

I'm doing it atm (still), in the rain and I hope at the end of the climb it will be tough but successful! Will see.
    Welcome to the SPG :)

PS Job like this is for a pair of ACs. HPPT ~1,5 is not enough. It should be 1,7 maybe 2+

Yes I had a feeling it was more the locos being the problem than anything else as my average speeds were similar to what you were getting and to be honest I’m quite new to SPG.

They made changes to the physics of the game. According to me, a plus. Trains feel heavy now. But there are mishaps too.

    UPDATE

    Rain... I'm stuck! Haha
    Slow&Funny hehe

So the DPU setup basically makes both trailing units act as slugs?

It makes all locomotives lend their power and their brakes~they take part in braking.
PS It depends of course on the chosen DPU configuration :D

But if the trailing units have fuel and engine cutoff they must be getting air and power from the lead units. I see the benefit for braking and traction, but I don't understand why they wouldn't be running and contributing. In the real world I see every loco running

The concept of DPU is to help/contribute, in real life too :)

UPDATE Ah, now I understand what you mean (cutoff) - the in-game configuration makes it work properly. Recently I studied a real ES44DC manual and these settings are actually the same. That's how it was designed.

These switches are more a matter of control than the actual locomotive off in these respects.
And sometimes it's a matter of safety https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?2,268835
These machines were designed in this way (their required settings).
