Not sure how much a difference a 3080 will make. I'm planning on getting one once there are some to get, and am not expecting much gain. Regardless of fps, whether it's 60 or 20, my GPU usage never goes above around 60% anyway.

I will be, my monster rig is just for TS, no way I'm going to get many gains throwing in something hotter than a 5GHz i-7700k, but swapping out the GTX1080 might see a few small gains here and there.

I think you'll see more than a few small gains at 4k.

I'm upgrading just because a 10 year old rig is ridiculous. The fact that I went so overboard back in 2011 is the reason it has remained viable for so long... that and a GPU refresh in 2014. I also do a great deal of photo editing and video editing, so core count is where I'm at at the moment. I was going to go for a Ryzen 9 3950X, but I'll wait and see what Zen 3 brings to the table now I think.

I may need to upgrade just to keep working on this :)

To be fair, considering the insane amount of geometry, my rig handles this with no issues:

Still so much more to do :)

Interesting guide dunkrez, the Ballast Tamper looks great, what Tamper is it based off?

Thanks Jamie, much appreciated. It's based on a very popular 1980's ballast tamper, with examples that exist around the globe today.

The units I am referencing for the build are DR73101 and DR73106 of the BR civil engineers department (Circa 1987-89). If the community get busy with liveries, then this unit would be at home on Swiss, European and other railways. There's always one of these lurking somewhere!

There's still a lot of work to do before its release, my aim is to have it as functional as is possible and making all the right noises :)

It's a good start, however, tonight I need to sleep. Back to the coal face tomorrow after some rest.

Just a quick update for anyone interested in the ballast tamper (which shares some remarkable likenesses to a Plasser & Theurer 09-32 CSM), the project is well underway now - I'm very keen to show off the progress made so far so stay tuned for further updates.

Trying to keep the poly count down on it is a little tough, as it's a very complex bit of kit, but it is coming along beautifully :)

Happy Sunday dudes, here's a couple of new shots of the 80's ballast tamper. Cabs are now halfway to completion and the locomotive can be driven. Next up will be some serious scripting :)

Once this project is wrapped up and out in the wild, it will be time to start the next loco. Exciting times!

What's your top next wish for a loco Eric?

Because they were common in the 50s (just), 60, 70s and 80s, and because there's a real need for 1st gen DMUs in train sim. All we have is the 101 and the 117 really.

Just wondered if im missing a step or something? 20201217162636_1.jpg

Maybe worth having an experiment with post-processing effects (ReShade, sweet.fx) - this should help the final image quality along though it is expensive in terms of cpu resources.

From the picture you've posted it looks ok to me...

Are you on about the messy looking windscreen because if so then what you are looking at is the reflection of the breaker panel on the bulkhead wall behind the driver's seat...

As we head into the stormy seas of 2021, I'd like to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a Happy New Year! :)

Stay safe and don't take ridiculous risks - I'm looking forward to bringing you a slew of new locomotives throughout 2021.

Thank you to everyone who has taken an interest in the upcoming ballast tamper DR73106, everyone who has downloaded the HST cab and lights update pack (closing in on that 1500+ download mark!) and lastly, thank you to each member of our awesome community for your thoughts, opinions, time and effort - I'm sure we've all made a difficult year much more bearable for one another.

Take care & Thank YOU! :D

    Hey dunkrez,

Did you ever finish your HST cab mod using the cab from the new DTG pack? I bought it for this sole purpose in anticipation ages ago and haven’t touched it at all :)

    Hey mate,

I got it as far as being drive-able, then put the thing on the back burner so I could concentrate on building the tamper... it'll be out there eventually.

It is definitely 4K. ...just 4K with no anti-aliasing.

When you click on the image to enlarge it in here, and if you do not have a 4K screen yourself, you'll only be seeing a fraction of it.

FWIW I have a 4K monitor and run the game in 4K. If I turn the AA off it looks really terrible. It’s just jagged and flickering lines everywhere.

Ahh yes.. I know what you mean now. My question with that would be; Is it worth losing the AP addons, and all the other stuff currently for the old HST? I doubt this woudl take advantage of those. Or is Hightower suggesting that you are going to graft the new cab into the old model? If so.. then drop everything, and get on with it :) LOL. That cab in the existing models, with AP packs and all the other goodies woudl be very impressive.

I vaguely remember Duncan mentioning "Frankensteining" the models, unless he was talking about something else, my memory's not always the best.

what's the score with the tamper??? Have you got scenarios for it or is it quick drive (second thoughts - slow drive) only??? ;)

It'll come with quick drive consists and some scenarios.

Yep, according to official Indian Railways documentation, the engine used is a Cummins KTA-1150L rated at about 470 BHP @ 2100 RPM then when you consider that it's got 3 gears driven mechanically and weighs in at a hefty 68 t, it's definitely not a high speed experience. The cab views are pretty cool though, front and rear transfer cabs (front cab offers cool views due to the big windows, rear cab you can see the trailer) including the tamping control cab which offers views of the tamping kit.

I've kept things as true to the 1980's example as humanly possible.
