So the 317 just came out! So, buy now, wait for sale, or avoid? Screenshot (229).png

It's a relatively safe bet that it's going to be brilliant.

Buy now if you want it, It'll be a while before it is in a sale. Anything from AP is A1.

Already snapped it up, though I'm too busy working on the ballast tamper to be playing for a while.

Yeah, their stuff is always great. I wish people wouldn't whine about the motor sounds though. I know they're aliased from their 319, but from what I can tell they sound pretty similar in real life.

Hmm. Sounds like it might be a vital requirement to future scenarios, which sucks for me. LOL I don't have the routes needed for these scenarios yet anyway, plus I need to fill a lot of other holes first to eventually be able to play the scenarios.

They've only really ran on London, Tilbury & Southend, ECML South and WCML South until the late 1980s IIRC.

I am referring to the scenarios included with the pack. I don't have Midland Main Line, for instance.

    From Wikipedia
" The units were built to operate services on the newly electrified London St Pancras to Bedford route and were due to replace the elderly (and unreliable) Class 127 diesel multiple units finally being replaced in mid-1983. Units were delivered in the standard livery of BR blue/grey.

In 1986, the route came under control of the Thameslink subsector of newly created Network SouthEast. From 1987, new dual-voltage Class 319 units were introduced on the route, allowing the creation of a new cross-London service, from Bedford to Brighton, via Farringdon and City Thameslink station. The Class 317 units were displaced to outer-suburban services on the WCML out of London Euston to Milton Keynes and Northampton. They replaced the slam-door Class 310 units, which subsequently transferred to the London, Tilbury and Southend railway.

However, the use of Class 317 units out of Euston again proved to be short-lived. In 1989, the second batch of new Class 321 were introduced onto WCML services. The Class 317 units were again displaced, this time to the Great Northern and West Anglia routes out of London King's Cross and London Liverpool Street, where they joined the second batch units. Therefore, for the first time, the entire Class 317 fleet was operating in the same place."

Interesting. That shows why it would be at home on many routes.

Looking at the AP catalogue, there is the 317 Vol 1, and it got me wondering, was a Vol 2 ever released? Is it still a future plan, or could it have been one of the ones that were once up and later withdrawn?

Is it just the 319, then, that has two vols available for EMUs?

(Incidentally, I just picked up the 319 Vol 2 in the sale, and was hesitant about another £11.99 on Vol 1, but took the plunge and was pleasantly surprised to see a 'reduction on the reduction' for owning Vol 2 already, so it was only £6.99.)

The 317 was made by Gu Studios and AP and is only available in the original design.

Gu studios are now working on the 745 which is a Greater Anglia unit.

Now I might have to buy both. Thanks for the hole in my wallet.
