Purchased TSW2 in the fall sale today. As a long term user of Train Sim I am quite impressed. However I am less impressed by the way in which the Fall Sale is being conducted.

Products are not clearly marked ( for the new entry to TSW2 user ) as not being compatible with TSW2, either at point of sale or anywhere in the product descriptions. The only indication is that they are not marked as being compatible by virtue of not possessing a tiny red sticker.

You can imagine I am not best pleased to have shelled out for Trans Pennine and Heavy Freight Packs to find that steam won't accept the tokens as I don't have the correct version of TSW.

I am not going to push this to an extreme conclusion but lets say I am less than impressed by the sloppy way in which these items are marked making mis-sales a likely prospect.

A strongly worded email is on its way to Dovetail ... naturally

It is understandably confusing to anyone who hasn't been following very closely. I would recommend that you ask for a refund on Northern Trans-Pennine and buy the TSW2020 base game instead. It is the same price as NTP but also includes a fair number of other routes and will allow you to receive the TSW2 version of NTP automatically. Then you should be able to redeem the Heavy Freight pack and the TSW2 version of that addon will be released in the coming weeks.

    Cheers

    NORTHERN TRANS-PENNINE for TSW2, description:

NTP for TSW2020 does not have such a clause. It can actually be confusing. Already on the occasion of Monster Sale there were such misunderstandings. Fingers crossed, get your money back!

    Na-tal-ka!? \o/

Good idea - that's what I have decided to do and i'll get Dovetail to refund the TP route for TSW version 1 now its included. Mind you that has just put me in downloading until sometime mid week by the look of it :)

They could "release" these licenses. They should be universal, no matter which version of the game I have. There would be no problem.

I see this could be very confusing!
It looks like in the fall sale that the routes are for TSW and not TSW2. I don't see NTP being on sale for TSW2.
So I think the purchase of TSW2 and NTP off the sale would lead to this situation.
I think, but I'm not 100% sure, is if the NTP was bought for TSW2 on Steam at full price (https://store.steampowered.com/app/...n_TransPennine_Manchester__Leeds_Route_AddOn/) then it would work.
And yes I realise about the preserved collection meaning there is another route to getting NTP on TSW2

Especially in regards to the 3 different platforms, across consoles and pc

Maybe if there was a way to verify that it’s the same device account it would be less prone to abuse.

I don't know why DTG cannot allow TSW2 preserved collection DLC to be backward compatible to TSW2020...as it would solve alot of these sort of issues. I guess it is their way of pushing more people onto TSW2...but there are still alot of non-TSW2 owners who have no intention of buying it and wish to fill out their TSW2020 collections.

Having 2 almost identical products on the market with a one way compatibility path is confusing to new users, regardless of how many notes you put in the descriptions.

It may be because TSW2020 isn't supported any more, and they're expecting people to read "Train Sim World® 2" in the title and assume it means "Oh this is for TSW2, not TSW2020". Tbh, Preserved Collection is probably just some form of loyalty programme, or as a way to calm down the torch-wielding pitch fork people angry they've spent a lot of money on a game and they're going to lose support for said game and its content, and have to buy the new game (which is, on the face of it, almost identical) in order to get new stuff.

Although I do agree, it'd be nice if you bought a TSW2 preserved item, you get the original TSW2020 version for TSW2020.
