Good evening. I invested in a new laptop and TS2021 was like a whole new game. However, Microsoft ran an update on Friday & TS has since been slow to load and it doesn't run correctly - 10sec on TS takes about 30sec and sometimes the scenes is still loading with buildings added when the scenario starts.

This could be a coincidence but has anyone experienced this and any suggestions?
    Matt

Check that TS is using the GPU (presumably you have one) rather than the CPU's integrated graphics. This can be a problem particularly with NVidea GPU's and it's plausible that an update could have upset things.

Not knowing if you have a Nvidia or AMD discrete card it is difficult to advise how to do it.
However Windows 10 now has an internal setting that can help with either card.
In the Windows search box (the little icon that looks like a magnifying glass - bottom left of the task bar) type in "Graphics Settings" then
    "Graphics Performance Preference"
This allows us to customise graphics settings for our specific apps, providing better app performance, hopefully including TS 20XX
Choose an app to set preference - DESKTOP or LAPTOP if present
In the choose an app to set preference we have two options:
    Classic App and
    Universal app
Chose "classic" for TS 20XX, TSW, and STEAM. (Universal see below).
You then browse to the relevant .exe file e.g.
\STEAM\steamapps\common\RailWorks\railworks.exe, choosing “ADD” at the drop-down window.
Then also add Railworks64.exe as well to run the 64-bit version of TS20XX.

The railworks.exe short cut icon is now added to the page and clicking on it, give 3 options:
    • System Default
    • Power Saving
    • High Performance

Choose “High Performance” as the “best” option.
Don't forget to add the railworks64.exe file as well. Also add Steam.exe just for luck.

This should the optimise graphics settings for TS20XX both 32 and 64-bit versions on your computer!

    (TSW settings: STEAM\steamapps\common\Train Sim World\WindowsNoEditor\ Ts2prototype.exe).

Note: Universal apps seemed to be default windows apps - so for our non-windows games choose classic every time.
There are also enhancements in Windows when you are using a GSync monitor.
If you have a Nvidia card we can show you how to set the preference in the NVCP and someone who has an AMD card can also advise the same for that system.

    What he said.

Something I forgot to mention but you may have gathered reading that is that the problem with TS overlooking GPUs occurs with the 64 bit version. The quickest way to determine if this is what is effecting you is simply to start TS's 32 bit version and see how that runs. You could also have Windows' Task Manager running (Ctrl+Shift+Esc then click the Performance tab) to see how hard your system's main components are working.

Peter Hayes thanks for your help. On the Windows 10 bar I've selected Desktop which is what it was on before. I can't see anything about a classic or universal app though. On TS, I've got the settings on high.

For full disclosure, I have a HP Pavillion laptop with Nvidia GeForce GTX1050 running Windows 10 Pro. AMD Ryzen 5 processor. Like I said before, it was running perfectly and I haven't changed anything myself. It was taking a min to run 30 secs of tracktime at the weekend. I'm going to run a few scenarios tonight and see how they go although I don't feel as though I've changed anything.

JJTimothy Peter Hayes I've done everything apart from select Classic which I can't see on my laptop. Loading the game and playing the game is still painfully slow. I've run out of ideas now and seems a bit pointless adding more TS stuff from sales if it is so painful to play.

Can you put that in context? Pardon me for being a little hard of thinking but I don't know what you mean by that.

Have you tried running the 32 bit version? (Come to think of it is that what you mean by Classic?). TS will usually start using the 32 bit .exe by default unless you have taken steps to change that but you can choose which version to run by finding TS in your Steam application and clicking Play which will offer you a choice. Keep your eyes peeled when TS starts up- the splash will tell you whether it's starting the 32 or 64 bit .exe.

My old laptop was an HP so perhaps there's something in HP laptop BIOSs or somewhere that just doesn't like the look of TS (though I say "old" advisedly- don't know the exact vintage because it was second hand but it ran Windows 7). I found that the 64 bit version of TS ran abysmally but the 32 bit was fine. I put it down to the GPU issue which was just coming to light but the old thing died soon after so I never did get round to confirming that let alone sorting it out.

Another possibility, your PC being a laptop, is that power management settings may be starving TS of resources- again perhaps by not engaging the GPU.
