Hi folks, I hope you've all had a great Christmas and have been able to rest and recharge.

As the thread title suggests, it's time we all had a new (and decent) Class 47 in TS. Before I commit to what I've formulated, I need to gauge interest in this endeavor.

So, if you want a new 47 in TS, please hit like or leave a comment :)

    Thank you!

My second favourite loco is the "Brush" so that's a big +1 from me.

    (in case anyone was mildly or otherwise interested my top three loco's are 1st - Class 66, 2nd - Class 47 & 3rd - Class 37)

    Fully support that!

I just emailed AP earlier about a technical issue, and also enquired about the possibility of an AP Class 47. Will see what the reply is....

It would be lovely to see an AP 47 :) However, it's time to take the bull by the horns and do something proactive about the situation.

I think we can probably reach a similar standard for a fraction of the outlay. But I digress, this thread is purely to gauge interest here.

I'm going to keep prices as low as I possibly can Eric, keep things as accessible as possible for anyone with an interest in our hobby :)

The Kuju Class 47 is showing its age but instead of a new loco would an Enhancement Pack work?
Like the graphics upgrade you did for the HST of the same age.

What do people think is wrong with the current Class 47?

VP have several reskins and "improvements" as do a couple of UKTS files - would you be enhancing the Class 47 further?
    for example: https://www.vulcanproductions.co.uk/diesel.html
BR Blue Class 47 Pack (Pre 1985)
Virgin Trains Class 47 Farewell Pack V2.0

I'm probably setting myself up to be shot down but in my opinion I'd like to see a move away from the reliance on the VT 1st gen pack...

Since it was withdrawn (& I don't see it reappearing any time soon in a de-branded version), those who haven't got it (ahem, me...!!!) probably find it difficult to reskin the Class 47 and are at the moment quite limited in their choice of reskins...

TAKE COVER... I await the bullets...

The game needs a decent 47. The closest it got was the Virgin 1st gen pack, but many do not have this as it was withdrawn. The same version is available in Welsh Marches, but there are no reskins around for that version, and the AP 47 Sound Pack doesn't work with it, so you gain a nicer cab, but go back to having LOVE sounds.

I've no idea why a decent 47 hasn't been part of TS for years already.

I think it's dire. The sounds are terrible; The cab textures are so bad it puts me off using it, and the lack of features date it horribly. There are lots of locos I just can't bear to use because I have to sit and stare at cab textures that, let's be honest, must have looked pretty shabby even 10 years ago. The 55 springs to mind.

TS needs a new spoon. Simple. It's probably the most prolific and widely used diesel electric loco ever... yet it's seemingly not worth bothering with. It's a bit like the Spitfire getting all the glory, when the more successful Hurricane gets to play second fiddle because it's not as glamorous. People just think 47s are boring, but realistic scenarios need boring things... like more 1st gen DMUs. This isn't Train Sim World 2... this is a proper simulator... or as proper as it gets. We have enough shiny shiny.... we need the real, every day things.

Just build it... just do it.

Yes, and it is about time all reliance on a discontinued product was ended.

The 47 Virgin cab was okay, but could just be so much better.

Time to get this house in order :)

AP just seem to do what they want, which is why they do weird things like totally ignore the 47 (or even the 81 to 85 AC electrics), but release a class 317.. I mean... what?

The 317 was not made by AP but by Gü Studios. and it appeared on their Facebook page first.
AP just did the sounds and marketing of the unit.

It depends where you live as to how important the 81s to 85s are.
Ask someone who knew them from the WCML they would say yes.
Somebody who never saw them will say it's just another electric

The Class 47 Sound pack is a good start for £2.99

True of just about all the units... I grew up in South Wales and worked on the 158s when they first came out, only saw electrics when I moved to Kent in the 90s and have never seen a pendo at full chat (and am not interested either). The only real reason I would like an 8x electric is for freight

AP are cagey about their next release and suggestions to them get the reply that they are not planning on making it.

An indication of their next release is when a soundpack disappears from their list. If the Class 47 soundpack is removed from their catalogue then you know they have a 47 in the pipeline.

    AP products are lovely.

However, this thread is purely to kick the can around the idea of us having a nice new alternative producer of a 47.

BossMan did a very good 50 sold by AP. Maybe they might do a 47.

I agree, we do need a masterpiece 47. After all they were ubiqu ubic ubik.... were everywhere.

    I know.

That would be rather a lot of people though. If the criteria for developing a loco in TS was it must be seen literally everywhere, we'd not have much to play with. The WCML is pretty much most places in massive parts of England Scotland. :)

I like the above statement a lot.

If a railway enthusiast is interested in 00, 0 and/or N gauge modelling, he/she is spoiled for choice. There is so much to go at, many reproductions of unique locomotives. The ones that sell are typically of a high standard. The public interest in small scale modelling seems to have been on the decline for quite some time. There are very few shops like Beatties or Redgates (if you remember them!) with sets laid out running around the store. We're lucky to have Rails of Sheffield, Hattons etc. Smyths do not have train sets running around their toy shops and probably never will, as kids are infinitely more interested in Roblox, Minecraft etc.

Contextually, railway modelling became popular before the advent of home computing, it was very much tied to the heyday of the railway.

It's possible that we are entering into a new era for the railway enthusiast. The kids that grew up watching those trains whiz around Beatties also have a plethora of computing experience, especially when compared to the guys and gals in the generation that came before. My grandad would have had to have worked with Mr.Turing himself to have had any experience of computers. His generations grandchildren however, were born at the time that the home computer became ubiquitous.

Why shouldn't Train Simulator players be spoiled for choice in the same way as the railway modelers? A massive choice of high quality products would interest more railway enthusiasts, and the barrier of computing stopping people getting into train simulation as a hobby is now less relevant than ever.

As much as a 47 is needed, I'd equally like to see a HS4000 Kestrel, and every other ridiculous thing on wheels and rails. Do we even have a shay locomotive in TS?

Train Simulator is just model trains for the 21st century. You don't need to convert your garage or attic to accommodate it, and you can have (almost) all of the UK rail network in one box.

Yes, other countries are available, but I have no idea how other countries fare in terms of TS coverage... I'm only interested in UK stuff.

[edit] Model train enthusiasts please form an orderly queue to shout at me :)

Class 47 could be in two-three Vol packs if you think about it or one big pack.

vol. 1 60’s to the 70’s including all the named 47’s in that period of time.
    Vol. 2 80’s to the 90’s variants & sectors.
    Vol. 3 Privatisation.
Would be great if a new class 47 was released.

You can have almost the main lines maybe... Branch and non-mainlines are severely lacking. Loads of content for Devon and Cornwall but loads missing in between. I think I worked out that in Kent alone there's 3 or 4 HUNDRED miles of missing track, and that county is only 30 miles high x 60 wide...
We don't even have all the London Termini in game...

And that's just "now". Go back 50 years and we're missing loads

You should check where the Electrified parts of the WCML go.
British Railways was split in to 5 Regions - Great Western, London Midland, London North Eastern, Scottish and Southern.
The 81-85s would only have been seen on about a third of the London Midland if you go by route mileage, less than a quarter of Scotrail mileage and not at all on the Great Western, London North Eastern and Southern.

Is there an 81 at Barrow Hill? I swear I can remember seeing one there. Might be mistaken though.

If there's one there, I'll pop over once Tier 4 is relaxed and get busy with my camera ;)

I think you might be busy then... You may as well kill 4 birds with 1 stone...!!!

According to Wikipedia, Barrow Hill has an 81, 82, 83 & 85 in its collection... Oh, and the 89 also...

It was your Geography I was point out was wrong.

Wrong about what though? You're the one who seemed to think we needed to exactly establish track lengths in various regions as a metric by which to judge whether I'm "right" or not. They operated the WCML, so that's a butt load of people throughout the entire length of the country and a sizeable section of Scotland that would have seen them. The end.

You're just an argumentative little man.

I'm going to invest some time and effort into producing an 81/85 at some point in the not too distant future.

I need to pop over to Barrow Hill for my own photo's of the old AC's so I can use them with gay abandon for texturing as well as referencing. The Roundhouse is only half an hours drive from Bakewell. Might as well feast on all the available loco's there and take as many pictures as humanly possible.

Let's see if we can restore some of Peter's faith in the human race.

Nail on the head! Instead of having a few metres (maybe a few model miles) of model railway track space, you can have most of the UK rail network - many hundreds of miles - on your own computer.

The only problem now instead of a big enough attic or garage, is a big enough disk drive!
