    Hey all.
So when I get to the end of the route or wanna take another service or just walk around a station etc I’d like to give up control of the service and hand it back to the AI. However it’s very hit and miss as to whether I’ll get the “do you want to give up control” prompt or not. Is there a tried and tested way to give up control or is just random? I’ve tried leave the controls alone for two mins. Running miles away from the train. All to no avail.
    Thanks

Usually if you are on foot, it will eventually give you the option to give up service. However, if the service is yet to start it may not do it. Need an option in the pause menu to 'Abandon service' instead of relying on a timeout (which I have accidentally selected yes by accident when doing manual tasks like uncoupling).

Indeed I’ve been saying that all along just give us a button combo or something to give up control as if the ai doesn’t take over the service in time the service just “dies” and won’t move unless you move it which in turn screws up the entire session as nothing can move.

This is another long-running TSW mystery.

My theory is that somehow it must be interconnected with some other game systems that would break if they got rid of the pop-up, because otherwise it's a no-brainer to make it a menu option instead.

Even on the roadmap they only mention changing the default option when it pops up to no, so you don't accidentally quit a service. Baffling.

If you intend to stay on foot, just do it and don't worry about it. If you want to take over another train, as soon as you sit in the driver's seat and hit "Begin" you'll be severed from any previous train you might have been associated with.

nope. If you stay on foot and don’t get the prompt the service will not move and block up the entire route and you’ll be unable to take any service later on as it’ll all be red lights unless you completely restart free roam which surely isn’t how it’s intended to be.

Then as a workaround, run over to some idle loco on a siding and take that over, which will hand your original train back to the AI.

But I agree, an "abandon service" button is just one of several useful UI controls that would improve the game experience. (e.g., putting "Resume Saved Game" and "Resume from Last Checkpoint" buttons on the Pause screen so you don't have to kick out to main menu (with attendant loading screens) for the former or intentionally SPAD to get the latter)

Watching a stream a day or two ago someone derailed or had a SPAD, can't remember what, but he seemed to be able to load in a check point. Wish there was an option for that. And if there is I wish I knew it.

So did a little bit of experimenting because I’m that bored! And it seems you’re more likely to trigger the prompt if you leave the train by pressing triangle to climb down, rather than just walking out the cab. Not sure if there is anything scientific to that or whether pressing triangle “tells” the game you’ve officially left the cab or not. Maybe a mod or dev can confirm?

What I do to give the service to the AI after finishing mine is to stand up just before the train completely stops. Then operate the doors if needed from the standing position. When the service will end, since you won't be sat on the driver's seat, the game won't make you drive the next service for the same train.
