Hi, earlier in the thread I listed my personal three choices I'd like to be fixed and/or improved, as well as rounded up the answers from the replies in this thread.

I came to the conclusion that these three items were a priority:
    - Flickering anti-aliasing
    - Night lighting
    - Shadow draw distance

Hello, I've seen this video before and have several ini tweaks enabled myself on my system for when playing TSW 2. Whilst they fix and/or improve some things, there are just some things which it won't fix. Such as the shadow draw distance.

Absolutely. The text/list of graphical issues in the original post is from the ‘Description’ text in the video, that’s all ;) Thanks for bringing it to wider attention & generating the debate!

I would really like the anti-aliasing flickering and the shadow draw distance to be fixed and adjusted.

I know they've acknowledged the need for improved skies, but I don't understand what's happening here - is the Sun half-through the clouds? With that amount of cloud cover, it shouldn't look like that (to me, anyway).

Night lighting is dodgy at the best of times. Sam acknowledged this in yesterday’s stream and hopes that at some point, they will improve the sky box.

There was an issue on SPG in the TSW2020 version where the vehicles would appear with sunlight shining on the underneath after sunset. I get the feeling that the clouds (and possibly the ground) do not actually block out the light from the sun or the moon. Alternatively, the vehicles are built to show light patterns based upon where the light source is but do not take into account any textures that might block that light source...

I see, I don't think the issue is the clouds not blocking the sun, I think the sun is actually below the clouds in my screenshot. upload_2021-1-28_10-56-59.png

I can look past most of the problems listed. What I find truly awful is the artificial light sources and there complete lack of power, or more correctly the environment's inability to reflect light back.

Head into a tunnel, turn on the lights, be it on a train, or better still, on foot and use the lamp. You can barely make out the opposite side of the tunnel. When riding the train there is no reflected light cast back from the sides of the tunnel that you should get when the trains lights are on.

I've calibrated my monitor with an external colourimeter, so I'm confident it's not the brightness of my monitor that needs adjusting.

DruidsNectar It isn’t an issue with your monitor or graphical settings. It’s because TSW is really quite (and I say this in light terms) crap with dealing with night lighting. Reflective lighting is non existent and light sources at night are near zero. Which is why we have that awful artificial lighting at night causing all sorts of visual oddities. Not to mention it just looks plain wrong.

I'm amazed and disappointed that so few people care about the poor water textures in the game. From my perspective, it's a real spoiler in many of the routes. It's hardly ever mentioned in the forums and never comes up in the streams. Doesn't anyone look at the sea in IoW or the river that winds through SPG? Not a ripple, a flow or a wave. TSxxx is better.

The water textures could use improvement but I feel like shadow draw distance and lighting is more important in my opinion

I find it strange that we can use a flashlight but when in a dark tunnel such as the tunnel on the approach to Atlantic Terminal-Brooklyn on the LIRR, it barley reflects light. Makes no sense because flashlights are pretty bright

Right, when I read your opening post I wasn't sure your were if you were including artificial lighting in your list entry for "terrible night lighting". Obviously I don't want to come across pedantic, but artificial light sources are the biggest annoyance for me. Generally "outside" at night the natural lighting is okay. It's no worse than I would expect from other games, but torchlight, headlamps, etc is inexcusable. If you get up close with a lamp, the surfaces light up fairly well, so it seems that distant objects/surfaces don't get the appropriate amount of light cast upon them. Signals are bright and clear from a distance suggesting that the light source may not the problem, it appears to be how surfaces and textures are reacting to light sources. Unless this a major flaw with the Unreal engine, or a poorly implemented global setting applied to the game, then I suspect this might be quite a major problem to fix, potentially requiring the developers to revisit all routes and update textures and surfaces etc.

A quick Google of UE4 lighting problems doesn't appear to throw up any results that the engine is bad at lighting, but I have seen a number of queries by people asking how to light scenes/objects properly, which seems to suggest it is a complex and difficult area to master. All replies seem to suggest tweaking the meshes etc in the environment. This therefore leaves me to conclude that in order to properly fix the lighting issues a revisit of all routes is going to be required. Potentially no small feat depending how these routes are composed, there could be hundreds of items that needs adjusting. One thing is clear, if it's gong to be fixed, then sooner rather than later is going to be key, because the more routes that are added the bigger the task to fix it later on. Maybe that's why it'll go unfixed.

Sooner rather than later would be good because it would put dtg in a much harder place to fix the lighting if they wait too long

I appreciate it's not necessarily a graphical issue, I'd like to point out that snow needs a bit of an overhaul - particularly on trees and foliage.
Here's a picture I took out the back of my parents' house:[IMG]
The trees here are a browny/grey colour.

Here's a screenshot in TSW2 (Koln Aachen as its the newest route I have installed):
    20210208152144_1.jpg
Some of these trees are whiter than Richard Hammond's teeth, and it just makes the game look (to me) really bad and cheap. Also why are all the trees evergreens? I haven't seen a single deciduous (one that sheds all its leaves in winter) tree in this game.

I found it odd that in the winter, there are leaves on the trees. That should not be the case unless you are in a warm climate all year long

You cna have evergreens in colder climates, although they're not typically trees, mostly bushes and the like, at least round here:[IMG]

Thing is, aren't they using SpeedTree in TSW? I'm pretty sure something like SpeedTree, a software dedicated to goddamn trees, has features regarding trees in different seasons. I mean I don't know, but I suppose it has, it probably should be easy to make good looking trees in all seasons if you pay for a tree software that specialises in trees.

They are. I think if they can just change the base texture in snow from white to a grey/brown colour as mentioned above, it'd look better. Maybe the only trees the builders like happen to be evergreens?

Well, around here (SE US), magnolias are evergreen broadleaf trees - very big trees - even in the snow (which we do get; in fact had some yesterday).

Although not the case in Sand Patch region or the UK, most forest trees in Germany are evergreens, generally fir and spruce.

Since my last post, I'm inclined to agree with the OP @londonmidland. The lighting at night in this game is absolutely dire. I was mistaken when I thought the night visuals were acceptable.

Surfaces do not reflect ambient light properly, and I suspect that is the major problem with the lighting. Light sources such as signals can be seen from an acceptable distance, proving that the surfaces are not reacting accordingly to light sources.

Anyone who is a fan of Euro/American Truck Simulator will know they are in the process of upgrading the lighting engine of their game. They post really detailed blogs of what this entails, and one thing they have mentioned with their new lighting engine is that it will require their artists to revisit all DLC and retouch how lighting behaves (reading between the lines this means how object textures behave).

If you're interested read more in SCS' blog here here: American Truck Simulator - Lighting

    It' worth noting this comment:

To prepare for this new light system, our teams had to make a lot of changes to existing in-game world objects; including a majority of the in-game assets, textures, and materials to better work with the new physical model of the new light system.

I can't see why this would be different in UE4, and DTG's silence suggest they know this is a flaw that will require an "expensive" amount of effort.

Talking of expense, how is it SCS can deliver DLC's for less than half the price than DTG and still offer full development support to them even 10+ years on? Can anyone hear the DTG cash-cow mooing? SCS are the benchmark in simulation and dedication, no one yet has come close.

Maybe because SCS has twice the staff and annual revenue of 5 million pounds.

Trucks are a lot more popular than trains.

Trucks more popular than trains? Really? I’d be very very surprised at that.

The lighting in this game is just so utterly messed up, it's not like any other game I think I've ever played. I'd love to know the technical reasons for what is going on, but to a layman the world isn't lit anything like the real world. Everything appears to be lit independently with zero allowance for where the natural light source may be. It appears they've used work-arounds everywhere that don't really work and the lighting isn’t real. I could write a list a mile long of everything wrong with the lighting in this game, but that fact that it would appear that they're still struggling to make the tunnels dark for the SEHS patch tells you all you need to know. In the long term interests of the game it really does need a complete overhaul, and the sooner the better.

In the meantime, check out his poor soul...it's like the 7th Demon Of The Apocalypse has gone out for a cheery jaunt in Kent.

I'm no expert, I'm sorry if I found the wrong games or something, but a quick search later:
Euro Truck Simulator 2 vs TSW 2
Those numbers would appear to speak for themselves. Even if we triple TSW's numbers (as Sam said the player base is pretty much 33/33/33%), they're still vastly smaller than that truck simulator's ones.

They are by quite a large margin

Even Train Sim has x10 less players

I'm sure you're correct, but I meant more as a real world item. I would be gobsmacked if there were more people into trucks than there were trains. The game might be different...but then that's where TSW fails to draw people in and then retain them. It needs to get rid of all these major niggles and be more engaging in the process.

Train sims are much more boring than truck sims, the people that enjoy maintaining a certain speed and stopping at stations is much less than the percentage of people that enjoy driving, even non truck fans can enjoy ETS, especially with some wacky mods, but not all train fans would enjoy a train sim.

Edit: also a lot more people drive cars and so if they enjoy simming chances are they are more drawn towards stuff they are more familiar with

I agree - especially with the point you make in your edit. There's a reason most major open-world games (not talking about sims) let you drive road vehicles and only a handful let you drive rail vehicles.

It's quite possible that real trains may be more popular than real trucks. I have no interest in trucks whatsoever and therefore have no way of judging which (real one) is more popular. If we look at the simulation options though, it's clear that trucks are a lot more popular than trains by looking at the number. I'd guess that's the case because your average person is more familiar with them, seeing them on the roads every day, etc. Anyway, I can see your point and don't want to de-rail :D this thread any further.

Me neither. I remain surprised but trucks are a world I’ve never been exposed to.

Now, the lighting in TSW2 is rubbish. On you go....

    Speaking of rubbish lighting...

Here's another pet hate. World (and particularly Station lighting) coming on as a function of time of day rather than ambient light. This is just ridiculous - the time ranges from 1630-1700 in Winter and the only lighting you can see is from AI trains.

If your Truck or Flight Sim player fancied a foray into trains and saw this sort of nonsense, do we think they would make the switch?

    I don't see a problem there. I can't really see anything there :D
No kidding - this is one of the big immersion problems, yeah

    UPDATE Back to the topic:

Full agreement with the author of the thread + trees in winter and the 'moire' effect (textures).
Unnatural repetitive patterns everywhere. Terrain textures are not done correctly!

Agree with many comments here. I am hoping there will be a major lighting update in the future to TSW which will allow true shadowing and reflective behaviour like some recent RTX-enabled titles. By necessity this will be able to be disabled on potato pcs or last gen consoles. The catalyst for this will most likely be UE5, so I wouldn’t expect too much until then.

I added the edit because I felt like I didn't manage to explain what I meant exactly.

The fact is, ETS2 and MSFS20 for example give you more freedom and are approachable for everyone, in the case of ETS almost everyone can drive and in the case of MSFS20 the game has been made to be usable even by someone that knows very little about aircrafts.

Train sims however can't do that for their very nature, DTG can make TSW as arcade-y as they like, put in collectables and simplifying all they want (to the extent of putting auto play journey) to attract as much people as possible, but if you don't know how a signalling block works, the basis of how a train works, etc... you can't really enjoy a train sim like you could enjoy ETS or MSFS20 if you knew nothing about trucks or airplanes.

Chances are, if you use a train sim is because you want that realistic experience to drive a train, or aspire to get better at it until you can start to drive without various HUD elements, meanwhile you could fire up MSFS20 just to take a look at some scenery, or ETS just to drive about, the lack of freedom inherent with a train sim is the differentiator.

For example, another sim that forces you to do things "the right way" and forces you to read manuals and stuff is Digital Combat Simulator, that has a similar crowd to TS20xx (and its DLCs cost €70 ;)), I guess Train Sims, for their very nature do not attract the crowd that likes sims just to relax, have a look at some beautiful place, etc...

How many people picked up a train sim, realized they couldn't do anything except following the rules, and just crashed out of boredom and never touched a train sim again?

Sorry for the Off Topic, that doesn't mean the lighting in TSW2 is good though :/

Wet textures on things like hedges just make it look like snow (to me anyway). Some grass is even just plain white. I love driving in the rain but this is yet another thing that puts me off it. (Season was set to Summer - only noticed it on HMA, pictured, and SKA)

I absolutely love playing American Truck Simulator and I like how the prices of their dlcs are low. I feel like they are much more quicker to fix issues compared to dtg (yes Im aware they have more workers then dtg) and are way more transparent compared to dtg

Day lighting looks marginally better than it used to do, but night lighting is still horrendous as plagued with flaws.

The rain looks nice as well. I hope though that the night lighting gets fixed sometime when tsw3 or tsw2021 or whatever the hell the next game is called comes out since they are upgrading to UE4.26
