It's a shame that there isn't an chance to get shots entered when certain packs are used, I don't think I have any vanilla routes installed so automatically that's me discounted as I'm not uninstalling stuff just for screenshots and then putting it back on after. Also, I spend a lot of time creating either favourite class members or making items that allow for the expansion of existing DLC to broaden the scope and appeal of them and sometimes accuracy too. All of these are also banned from entry to the competition which is a shame because its the stuff I like to spend my time doing and sharing with the 3rd party users through the vibrant TS community.
Agreed. The thing is, the actual DTG promotional splash screens are always retouched to hell and back... but you can't enter a screenshot with AP weather installed... or RW Enhancer etc. Take the current WCML South splash screen... it's got photoshop lens flares all over it. If you entered something like that, it would be disqualified. One rule for them.....
Tbf that's standard lens flare from the DLC hence why it has a vertical strip down the centre of the headlight.
Oh no it's not LOL, and oh no it doesn't. I think you are referring to the wrong image. As I said the DTG promo splash screen.
If people want a competition that allows 3rd party material, why don't we set up our own competition, where we vote for the winner ourselves? The only prize will be pride... I'm happy to set one up if people are game.
99% of the time I’m using AP stuff, so at least it makes it easy to get a screenshot, as the only time I run the default stuff at the moment is for the comps. Considering what a vibrant - and indeed integral - part of TS third party developers are, it’s a shame. On the one hand I can certainly see that DTG want to showcase their own work, but on the other, the could be showcasing the possibilities others can do with TS.
It is not in DTG's interest to advertise stuff that isn't available in Steam. As I said if people want a third party competition, I'm happy to set one up.
Sounds great, I’m for that.. Similar basis, two pics per week, on voted themes? (We could do the same as the official themes, but I hope that wouldn’t show up DTG stuff too much!)
I find the screenshot thread enough. As long as people like the posts they enjoy - I have a lot of outgoing upvotes, and they are honest - that feels enough of a pat on the back. To me it's not a competition, simply sharing our hobbies and just simply appreciating each other, it feels good. On the note by cscarpenter on the competition thread, I kind of agree. I'm following some photostreams and found some wisdom regarding photographing and it's like with everything, there is the good, the bad, and the unusual. I don't know how good my shots are - not swimming in likes - but I often felt that the winner was somewhere in the middle considering the competing entries. This week's was actually good, along the majority of the entries. I generally find that people like the material, not the quality. There are some streams showing photos from around the world - an SD40 in the umpteenth obscure livery in bad light and weak composition gets triple the likes compared to a nigh perfect shot any interesting European train. Capturing a Steam engine also comes with a +50% like bonus. The sky covered in black smoke adds another 25% like bonus, be it coal or diesel clag, like Alco or some old British stuff. One thing is focus, some shots try to tell too much, some enjoy the scenery complexity while others do not. Garden of Eden-itis. But it's the same on Steam, there are some photographers with a large following, so they show up at the top - with really bad shots. There are many good ones, too, fortunately. I just recently found a person with a gazillion of awesome shots. His friend list is too small, unfortunately, the world would deserve to see his works. As for AP, it's a double edged sword a bit. Loading screens hardly sell me anything, instead I'd like to see the best pictures the community can offer. On the other, it could create a disadvantage to those who don't want prettier weather, effects or higher fidelity models.
I would Deffo be up for that. I have a miriad of AP and suchlike content that I would love to enter into the DTG comp but can't.
I have posted something but I'm guessing it died at birth. I guess people are generally happy just posting their screenshots in the regular threads.
There are two dimensions that are kind of interesting. * UK / US / DE (ecosystem) / rest - Currently 4-2-1 * Era - Currently 5 vintage (1, 2, 3, 4, 6) and 2 modern (5, 7) - Could make a case that the Austrian picture with the castle is vintage, too. Goes hand in hand with my Facebook experience - it keeps throwing UK steam at me despite hardly ever clicking on it.
It seems the comp is alive and well. Just a bit of fun - i.e. show off screen shots that we can't enter in the DTG contest and have some bizarre choice of themes (i.e. these week's theme).
And I see that the argument about 3rd Partys in screenshot contests has devolved into a Facebook argument......
At least we never have such contretemps here! I can see the argument that screenshots can look more impressive with AP etc, but I can also see the argument that DTG want to showcase what customers can get, without paying extra for enhanced third party developers. But then again, if the routes showcased in the screenshots aren't in the current version of TS, you have to pay for them just the same as you would for a third party route or train.... Quickly stuffing those worms back in the can, at the end of the day, it's to showcase DTG products and, much as I like AP, I can't argue with that. Nothing to stop us having a parallel competition, which is now underway.
Hi folks, As week 1s proud winner of the new unofficial comp / Judge & jury for week 2s winner, my job looks like it will be a doddle. This weeks winner is ....................................................................................................... The only entrant so far. I await your entries. Remember anything goes, 3rd party DLC, Re-skins, Your own dev routes DLC etc. It's just for fun and another way to show off your talents.
Is that the steam train on the Mk3 carriages because, that's the 4th screenshot he posted in the thread, isn't there a 3 shot limit. This is just for going forward, not for this week, got to keep folks to the limits
Think there is a bit of confusion. I have won the DTG official screenshot for this week not the unofficial week 2 comp. The winner of the unofficial comp is yet to be decided as it doesn't close till 9:00pm GMT tonight (Friday). The Steam train with MK3s was offered by cscarpenter not me and clearly states it is only for fun and won't be included as a serious entry. Ironically it currently has had the most likes. LOL I personally have no entries for this week (week 2) as I get to be Judge & Jury after winning week 1. Hope that clarifies things a bit. P.S. There is still time to wow me with your winning entries.
Makes a change from it being me LOL. I personally put it down to an age thing and premature senility. Well they seem like good excuses & often get me out of sticky situations.
Well done AirbourneAlex on a fantastic screenshot - was this in a scenario, or how did this ensemble arise?
Just my guess but I'd imagine it's an ensemble, it looks like a weekend style possession and I wouldn't fancy being sat there on a scenario waiting for them to move
Funnily enough I was enquiring after daleks in TS, and low and behold we see them in the winning entry.
This is from WCMLS Career scenario 2K22 MK - Euston, about 5 mins in just before Bletchley, 10mph TSR.
IronBladder well done - a third win! Winning a quarter of competitions so far, you've clearly got the eye for a winning shot.
Thanks for your kind comments. It's always a thrill to win as I try hard with my screenshots and I'm pleased when they turn out well.
Thanks Inversnecky. Looking at the winners above, it looks like DTG take the theme seriously when judging winners.
4 months in, and IronBladder is still the only member to have multiple wins in the contests so far, competition is fierce..
I agree, personally I love it when the competition is strong and you get a varied selection of winners. To me it can get a bit boring when the same names keep appearing as winner as it tends to create a closed shop type of feeling for anyone new to the game who would maybe like to try their hand at having a go themselves. Long may it continue.
