For me, a Br 212 with Silberling coaches was the most beautiful thing as a child. Still like them to this day.

I'd have to say Tweetsie Railroad's two engines were my favorites as a kid, and kinda still are to this day.

The one in my avatar: LAG EL, aka DRG E 69, aka DB 169. Built 1905 by Lokalbahn AG to serve the short line Murnau-Oberammergau (the first AC electrified line in Germany!) they* continued in service until 1987- a breathtaking 82 years. My childhood local train.

*Well, four of the five. Nr. 1 was retired in 1954 because when DB changed the line to standard 15kv AC, they didn't think she was in good enough shape to be worth converting.

Its Indian Railways WAG-1 because I got to experience its cabride when i was 5-6.

    WAG stands for:
Wide: Broad guage (5 ft 6 in / 1,676 mm)
    AC: 25kv OHE
    Goods: Suitable for freight operations

CL37's, I saw/heard them daily as they trundled down my local Sidings, I could see them through a gap in the next street.

Manila MRT Line 3 Tatra RT8D5M been on these Light Rail Trains as a young child. When I moved to the United States from Manila Philippines where those Tatra LRVs are operated those LRVs became another childhood favorite of mine NJ Transit Arrow III.
The Arrow III became my entry point into American Trains Main Line rail. since I did a round trip, New Brunswick, to NY Penn Station both inbound and outbound trips were NJ Transit Arrow IIIs like the picture above

Probably the trains I rode most often from Stourbridge to Birmingham. (Services ran into New Street in my day but now terminate at Snow Hill I believe.) They were cattle-class DMUs (usually Class 116 I think)- compartmented with no loo's but I didn't know better- the important thing was that you could sit right behind the driver and watch him (it was always a him) and the road ahead. I relived that before the pandemic on the Weardale Railway Class 122 and was thrilled to bits. It wasn't just any Class 122 either but one of the units that used to run the Dodger service between Stourbridge Junction and Town stations.

As a kid I was mostly brainwashed into loving anything that was preserved from the Great Western Railway. I used to loved the Pannier Tanks.

In terms of more modern trains it was the Class 50. I spent hours on Newton Abbot station trying to spot all of them.

HSTs are my favourite always, they were the smartest, sleekest looking, fastest and didn't run on our local lines so you only saw them when you went to the big stations which made them feel special

Even if it was way too loud for me as a child, the DB BR 232 also called Ludmilla will always be my favorite. die-ludmilla-233-219-5-92-487917.jpg

The humble BR standard tank engine, I skipped school a few times to go watch them on the Bolton branch line in the 60's.

Which may confuse the heck out of American children, since over here the show is titled "Thomas the Tank Engine"

No idea how it is called but the one that was travelling between Moscow, Minsk and Tallinn before refurbishment. Plus those coaches... Spent lots of my early childhood on those going between Tallinn and Moscow. Oh, and the dining was... Just luxurious. Oh USSR... Not everything was bad.

That beautiful machine used to take me up to the mountains every summer, every year since I was born. Covid ruined my 14 year streak.

That was mine too as a kid, my Dad and I would always get excited when we started catching these on trains as they got phased in.

What is still called Pendolino -or tilting train- today (project born in 1967 and realized in 1974 as FS ETR401)

And this one too, FS E444 (lead loco used for Intecities (below-top) and Trans Europ Express (below-bottom) in the 70-80s)

on the way to school there was a small path that ran along the railway line. At the beginning the noise and vibrations of the cc72000 which pulled at 140 km / h the express trains between Paris in Nantes scared me, but I was fascinated and I waited for a passing train before returning home. Sometimes a driver would use his 2 tone horn and his "tiiiii tuuuuu tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii" still rings in my memory

    The "Toaster"!
As a kid, I gre up in the Bronx with a perfect view out my window of the NEC where it meets the Bronx River just south of the old Westchester Ave station. When there wasn't a freight waiting to enter the hunts point market blocking the view, I would watch those AEM-7s wizz by! To me, this was the best electric on the NEC since the GG-1!

As a kid it always was the BR 101 for me, though the Dutch VIRM and Mat '64 and Serie 1700 were close contenders. I liked it's sounds and sleek design, and rember playing it on TS vaguely a long time ago. Nowadays I'd prefer the BR 120 when it comes to IC locos. I'm really excited about it coming to TSW soon, though sadly without cab car.

Yep, me too. Growing up in the 70s in Essex (the county to the north-east of London, for those who don't know), they were my favourite locos to spot. Double-headers on the container trains, or single-headed on the Harwich boat trains, to a small boy like me they were incredible.

My favourite locomotives are 91008 and 92022, which are a Class 91 and 92, respectively. I had models of both of them when I was a kid (I still have them actually) and I've 'bonded' with both of them. Unfortunately 92022 appears to be rusting away somewhere in Bulgaria and Croatia and I believe 91008 might have been scrapped.

Class 378 was my favourite because I used to get the London Overground on school trips when they had just come into service. I didn’t know anything about trains then but I always recognised that train and used to try making it with Lego

Class 150/2 Sprinters. Also at the time I hated Class 104s.

Now it's the other way around.
