I created a desktop shortcut to the 64 bit exe file. Works once fine, then today when I click it, I get a message that I have to log into Steam first.

I presume there is a way to sort the properties to remove this issue?

Yep just double checked, there's no way of circumventing the requirement to log into Steam.

I'm always logged in, do you mean I have to open the Steam client first, or am I misunderstanding? I thought the point of the shortcut was to bypass that (not sure what difference it makes save for a couple of clicks).

No it only requires that you are logged in to Steam, you don't even need it active (other than the Steam icon showing in your taskbar notification area)

Are you absolutely sure you were logged in and you hadn't completely exited Steam?

I think you have to have the Steam Client open to run the game.
I always open that first then go to the 64bit Shortcut on my desktop

How would I know I was logged in without opening the Steam client though? I haven't ever logged out, so was just presuming I was.

When I reboot sometimes, I'd note Steam might be doing an update, or installing a new DLC in the background - I presume it wouldn't so that unless I was logged in?

When I open the Steam Client it automatically connects but I don't have it starting when the computer starts
I just start it if I need to do something in the game - like make a screenshot :D

    I'd already given you a clue.. ;)
Click the up arrow next to your clock (and a few other icons varies upon user)
