With Cane Creek releasing in the near-ish future, I think it would be a great idea for DTG (and skyhook maybe) to allow UP locos to subtitute on Sand Patch Grade and vice versa. This would mean there would be a slight chance that trailing locos would be from the wrong route/company and you’d be able to choose which one you’d like to be in, leading. This is a very common thing in the US, although it’s typically only done with 6 axle mainline locos, so not the GP-40’s.

This would be nice maybe make the UP GP38-2 from Peninsula Corridor substitutable as well

As I said, you don’t usually see road switchers like the GP40’s outside of their home route due to their role. I’m mostly suggesting this for the upcoming Cane Creek route, with the UP SD40-2 and AC4400CW. Also any other future American freight routes could have this feature.

It would make sense for the GP38-2 to be subbed into Cane Creek Though, as UP has used Geeps on the Potash local before, though most of those have been either GP40-2's or GP60's, which have more HP than the GP38-2 (3,000 and 3,600 vs 2,000) So lack of power may be an issue for substitutions. (Unless they sub 3 GP38-2's for 2 SD40-2s, or 1 SD40-2 for 1 GP38-2 with a challenge of the reduced power)

Also Union Pacific's SD40-2s don't get out on mainline trains anymore either. Most either are in heavy switching duty in major yards or working local trains. So nowadays you wouldn't see one on CSX's track anyway (90's are a different story however)

That's fine. I thought they were talking about having Union Pacific GP38-2 being subbed in on the CSX Sand Patch Grade, which isn't realistic. But it definitely should be used on the Cane Creek route.
