How is that possible? Wouldn't you have to declare that you were either English or Welsh forever?
And does that mean that, because I have some long donated away English and Scottish blood from some long forgotten ancestors, I could be selected for either of those teams? Of course, at my age, I would be even more famous than Stanley Matthews. :)

Once you choose you are stuck with your choice as far as I know. I don’t quite know exactly how it works but it is possible to play for one nation at youth level and under 21’s and then switch to another one that you are eligible for in full internationals. I think once you have played for one nation at that level you can’t switch but I’m not 100% sure if there can be special circumstances.

I have a parent from Wales and another from England and I was born in Wales but have lived in England since I was six months old. So on two counts, I could play for either, if I was a footballer of course. It goes back to grandparents as far as eligibility goes but you do need to prove your connection to the country to be eligible. My connections to both Wales and England are very strong. Who would I choose to play for if I could? Probably England. However, if I was to be a professional sportsman I would choose snooker over football any day. I’m not particularly good at that either!

    About the national selection thing;

There are certain rules decided by the Authorities (FIFA) on how eligibility rules are set up.
The home nations (Scotland, England, Wales & NI) have special agreements relating to links at Grandparent level etc.

Northern Ireland-born players also have the right to choose between playing for the Republic's team or the Northern Irish Team.

I too would be eligible for either except for the minor facts that I am 63 years old and have always been useless at football!

Although what happened to Eriksen in the first match was awful (and thank God he is on the mend), Denmark don’t deserve to win the tournament based on this, and I would guess that they wouldn’t think this either. If they do win it, they would deserve it through being the best team and scoring more goals than both England and Italy.

Sorry, when did I say that? I'm starting to think you're just trolling now, because nobody can misinterpret stuff as much as you have in this thread!

That reminds me of this brilliant little video explaining the difference between the Ireland and Northern Ireland teams from the previous Euro tournament:

Ironic that they scored more goals than England and didn't go through! :D

Not sure how I feel about winning that one. Italy will be tough, probably put my money on them if I'm honest

From a non-biased point of view, I think Italy should have this.

England really have struggled through most games in this tournament, Germany were poor and Ukraine were, well, Ukraine.

However it should be a decent game when it arrives.

How about feeling proud and elated that we are in the final. Also backing your own team over another would be nice.

    Just a thought.

    I’m assuming your English?

It’s closer to home than it’s been in my lifetime. I’ve never experienced watching England in a final. This is all new. Yikes, it’s a bit exciting.

It will be a tough game, as it should being a final. However, Italy weren’t that convincing against Spain. England were comfortable against both Ukraine and Denmark (despite going behind against Denmark) but, with all due respect, these sides aren’t in the same league as Italy or Spain. Either team could win the final but they will need to raise their game.

I’m looking forward to it. The 1966 World Cup final was the first game I ever saw (on TV) so I’ve waited a long time for this. I guess most people on this forum weren’t even born.

    Do I?

What’s true is England are in the final and have earned their place in it on merit ( We can only play what’s put in front of us ) and have a great chance to win it. Best chance for years in fact.

No need to congratulate the England team for their achievement of getting to the Euros final though eh. ;)

England have a winning chance. Italy is a tough team. If England push themselves far they can lift the trophy. We’ll see what happens on Sunday

Italy ARE a tough team. Whoever ends up winning it hopefully it makes a worthy final even for neutrals.

That's not in the knockout part. The part YOU were speaking about in the post I replied to.

If your not trolling and not trying to pick fights (like with wombleway) what are you doing?

I’d rather you removed the whole thread than delete selected posts which ends up not allowing me to fully and completely defend myself when coming under public attack by the anti English and PC woke brigade.

Deleting selected posts is just another form of cancel culture which skews any defensive arguments into something different in possible favour of others and it is denying me my right to full replies when defending myself which is my right in a free speech society. Either delete the whole thread or not at all

And just for the record I wasn’t gloating just in case you think I was. What I was doing was expressing my support for my team and defending myself which is my right to do so against people who have a problem with that because of having big chips on their shoulders.

    Nobody here is causing problems.
I was trying to have a bit of banter as is the Scottish-English Rivalry.
Others have been having a good time enjoying the 'atmosphere' around it.
You on the other hand have undeniably been picking fights. Now saying Sam doing his duty in moderating this server is cancel culture? No, it's removing unpleasantness.

And the "anti-english brigade (supposed to be me) and PC woke" (idk what your getting at there) don't exist.

I'm not anti-english in the slightest, I'd just rather you didn't win, but that's what rivals do :)

As a Welshman living in England, I agree with this completely.

I have the radio on in the background whilst I'm working, and as I wanted to avoid hearing constant references to the footie today, thought that Classic FM would be a good, safe bet... Of course, they started playing Rule Britannia, Jerusalem, etc, which I can and do enjoy listening to, but then to my horror, a piano version of Three Bloomin' Lions gets played... NOOOOOOO!!!!

That's Classic FM for you, it has it's good moments, but gets a bit populist. I prefer radio 3 to be honest, you get to hear a much broader spectrum of classical music in my opinion.

    Anyway back on topic.......

    Looking forward (nervously) to Sunday.

The behaviour of some of the fans is irreprehensible. Booing the oppositions anthem is beyond contempt in my view. I wish frankly, the manager and players of the England team would address it and tell the fans that it is immature and casts a bad light on us. I think it is time other fans also addressed the issue as it takes the gloss off the progress made by the team.

There was a documentary a few years ago showing England fans abroad. Some young England males fans came across some Brazillian fans, mostly women. The sexist chanting which I won't repeat here was awful and embarrassing. A lot of this though is fuelled by newspapers, certain tabloids. They are quick to condemn fans behaviour but encourage it by reinforcing stereotypes of "foreigners".

I know most English people are sorely embarrassed by this, but unfortunately the minority who behave in this way are those who get noticed and they are representing us as a nation. The well behaved travelling fans of which the majority are I am sure, get forgotten about.

I read this morning that there is a widespread call to make Monday a national holiday in the UK. I think the only people who would benefit from this are the owners of pubs and liquor stores. Since most of the mayhem around these games seems to be fueled by alcohol, don't you think that this would be a big mistake? I hear the pubs are already going to be open later on Sunday. Look out!! Heads Up!! :D :D

It sadly wouldn't get passed by parliament in time never mind her Maj, can't see Boris calling her for a smoke and a danish on a Friday afternoon to sort it out!

Apart from the fact (previously mentioned) that a bank holiday would need to be passed by parliament - not likely between 10-11pm Sunday evening and Monday morning, companies would need to plan for such an event and clearly, this would not be possible. Also, people in key roles such as NHS, shop workers etc would not benefit and this would not be fair.

You've got to hold and give
But do it at the right time
You can be slow or fast
But you must get to the line
They'll always hit you and hurt you
    Defend and attack
There's only one way to beat them
    Get 'round the back
    Catch me if you can
    'Cause I'm the England man
    And what you're looking at
    Is the master plan
    We ain't no hooligans
    This ain't a football song
    Three lions on my chest
    I know we can't go wrong ;):D

Official bank holiday? Who says it has to be official. Win or lose I can’t see many turning up for work on time on Monday morning if at all? Whether we are celebrating or commiserating. Any bosses / managers who don’t plan for this happening are pretty stupid tbh.
