Train Sim World 2 - Steampunk Livery Designer Competition

Create a custom steampunk livery in Train Sim World 2 and you could win a free Add-On...

It’s time for everyone to put the cogs into motion and get creative again, with a brand new Livery Designer competition!

Put on your top hat, polish your monocle, and check your steam pressure gauges as the theme for this Livery Designer competition is steampunk.

We want to see your artistic creations using the Livery Designer tool. Create a ‘steampunk themed’ livery and you could win a new route or locomotive Add-On of your choice, including the soon to arrive and visually spectacular Cane Creek, expanding your collection in Train Sim World 2. To enter and be in with a chance of winning, here’s what you need to do...

    • Start the Livery Designer in Train Sim World 2 and choose a locomotive or wagon for your canvas. Note you cannot use the DB BR 403 ICE 3 or DB BR 406 ICE 3M for this competition.
    • Use the tool to create your steampunk themed livery. This must be completely original, void of any copyrighted material or intellectual property, it must not be a real-world livery and must of course, be inoffensive.
    • Once you’ve completed your design, take a screenshot in-game showing off your new custom creation. You can use Railfan Shots to make capture easy, see a guide on these here.( https://live.dovetailgames.com/live/train-sim-world/articles/article/tsw2-railfan-shots)
    • Submit your entry by posting on this forum link. Closing date for entries is 4:00 pm BST on 12th July 2021.
If you want some tips on using the Livery Designer or maybe some steampunk ideas to give you some inspiration, Railfan TV’s Nat will be creating a steampunk design using the Livery Designer in this evening’s broadcast, Tune in 7PM UTC Monday 21st June on Twitch or YouTube.

Winners will be announced on RailfanTV. Follow our social channels for the Railfan TV streaming schedule and find out when the winners will be announced.

For more information please go to the Dovetail Live article here (https://dtg.live/tsw/a/tsw2-steampunk-livery-designer-competition)

And competition terms and conditions here(https://dtg.live/tsw/a/steampunk-livery-designer-competition-terms-conditions)

Have fun everyone and good luck!

When it says locomotive or wagons, can you clarify whether multiple units are allowed? Should we read this as anything except the DB ICE 3 406/403 trains?

EMUs and DMUs should be fine (at least always were), ICEs are excluded because of licensing, which in their case is more complex. You can argue whether locos vs multiple units is a fair fight, but that's how it is now. You can simply take a bigger canvas with more parts and layers.

Steampunk coloring on the locomotive AC4400CW from Sand Patch Grade! A hat with glasses, stylish pipes and, of course, gears. A little rust and the main creation is a watch))

I am not the biggest connoisseur of steampunk, but from some pictures I saw some of the consistent elements in steampunk images I looked at was:
    1. A lot of little details and parts exposed parts.
    2. Weathering (although not universal)
    3. Extensive use of metals
So that's what I tried to recreate, instead of creating details myself I tried to make little details in the model stand out as much as possible, doing some weathering in the process.
I imagined a more dystopian-kind of world, where the train body being only "painted" with a primer (black colour) and some white details, with additional pieces just being added onto the finished body. Some of them being new, some being old and rusty.

Hopefully I'm not off topic, I know that canonically steampunk is all about tubes, hydraulics and pneumatics, but that's not so easy to replicate on a two-dimensional livery.

I also tried to create a train that I could see being used in a steampunk universe instead of a train rappresentative of the steampunk style.

"Steam Punk" is a very interesting choise for this competition. It is mainly based on the retrofuturistic style of the 19th century with its industrial steam-powerd machinery. But it still has a huge impact in modern pop culture and fashion.
This time I chose the BR101 as canvas. I think airships are a popular element, aswell as a growing skyline of a futuristic city. I also reused one of the first steam locomotives again: the "Adler" from 1835 and some skyline templates. Last but not least for the front of the loco I took a familiar face with a typical cylinder hat for this time period. So 300 layers are used up quickly! ...and to be fair, only this post. ;)

I have a question. The number of layers applied is limited to 300. If I can't fit my idea into this number, can I use multiple color editors to participate in the competition? Will this be considered a disqualification?

Sorry for my english, using google translator.

I am not going to use external tools, I cannot create a livery with a 300 layer limit and I want to use 2 or 3 colors of the same train. I will only use Livery Designer.

    Example.
In Steampunk 1, I will create the right side of the train, and in Steampunk 2, the left.

I’d stick to just one model if I were you. It’s in the spirit of the competition.

It levels the playing field and it’s all part of the challenge to decide what you have to compromise to fit into the layer limit.

If it’s 1 livery in 2 parts , then I don’t see anything wrong with doing so

Well I'd say it's questionable as you make something that can't exist in the game basically.

I'd say let him submit it, if no complaints are raised by DTG than it will become the standard, as it's a loophole that makes it possible to submit two different livery with the excuse of being on the same train.

If that's allowed, that I could be able to create as many livery as I want, one for the roof, two for every side and two for the front and back, increasing the shape limit by a decent margin. Yet I wouldn't be able to use that "one" livery in game.

I agree, this is not fair. And I'll follow the rules, I'll have to rework the livery. It is a pity that we will not be able to fully implement our plans.

And now a request to the developers, for the future. Increase the number of coats to create more ambitious and realistic liveries.

My Steampunk train. Let's see what he hides under the hood. I spent many hours making the interior parts look more realistic. I had to work a lot both with the shadows and with the general arrangement and detailing of the details. I like the end result, although there is no limit to perfection.

At the end, I want to add that there is a lot of free space left, both in the front of the train and on the opposite side. Unfortunately, I used all 300 layers out of 300 possible. Hopefully in the future, the developers will increase this limit, which will allow us to create fantastic liveries.

You could, within the spirit and letter of the rules, do your livery on an EMU, where you get 300 layers per car, and do your different colors on consecutive cars rather than opposite sides of one.

Accoring to the rules you need to submit one screenshot of your creation. It doesn't specify the angle of the shot, but one screenshot can never show both sides of the train. There is nothing in the rules that specifies you need to add all kinds of stuff on both sides of the train.

So, just use all the layers on one side of the train, shoot one screenshot, and ingore the fact the other side of the train is blank. As far as I can see, you're completely following the rules stated in the first post of this topic.

Hello! This is my submission for the Steampunk livery competition. I noticed that a lot of people were using Modern German locomotives, so I used an old-fashioned friend, the 1972 mkII Tube Stock! I decided to give it a little bit of character, by adding Goggles, and a well groomed Mustache. I also added some cogs above the wheels, to give it a mechanical look, whilst putting a Mechanisim above the doors, so they could open and close. I found the perfect place on Rhur Sieg Nord, picturing it in front of a factory, to give the illusion of steam emitting from the roof. A finishing touch with a Black roof, to represent a Top Hat and a Cog shaped Underground logo. This was both fun, and frustrating to build, and I wish you all a well-oiled day. May the best livery win!

Ok, this took a lot longer than expected (mainly because nothing could be brought over between the rolling stock), but I introduce to you...

    The Steam Bullet
    [IMG]

(originally I just wanted to do the loco, but it looked sad without a train, so I went on to give it coaches - hopefully, that's legal, but considering an entire TGV set can compete...) :D
    [IMG]
It was interesting to try and balance steampunky elements in the "uncovered" sections with the overall livery that should keep similar energy. I'd say that worked quite well.
(funny side note - it turned out to be quite a challenge to put the set together because when you select the whole set with all three liveries (cab, coach, loco), the last part of the set (cab or loco based on the orientation) spawns flipped for some reason. So I had to get two sets of these, one with correctly oriented loco, one with cab and play a little shunting scenario to form one functional set (you can see the leftovers of the other set below :D))

Well done! Elements like electricity, fire and smoke, fan belts and pipes fit perfectly into the era, also a nice pattern. Would be great to see such a "Steam Bullet" train in real life. ;)

Here's the Aero-motive. She's dirty with a bit of rust, as she should be.

I actually laughed out loud when I saw that mustache on the front of your train. Very cool, man.

A huge congratulations to Sparmi for winning the contest! Your creation is like a work of art. I will be in touch with you this week to organise your prize.

I would like to say a massive well done to everyone who participated, it is a joy to look at the creations you make and I look forward to seeing many more in the future.

Don't forget if you are interested in participating but aren't confident, ask other users for tips and tricks. I am sure many who took part would be more than willing to share their knowledge.
