I would never buy the latest model. I use a GTX1060 with 6Gb RAM and works reasonably well. There are better cards, but they are far more expensive and I wanted a system that runs quiet and stable. So I invested some money in a good quality power supply, good quality fans and a silent case. I always recommend to keep it balanced. Probably your processor may be a bit outdated as well, so no need to buy make that a big fun spoiler if you spent a lot of money on the fastest graphics cards. Also the SSD drive make be a difference, as well as having enough RAM. It

Yep. You might want to use the power supply calculator to have a rough idea of what you need. Of course, never go with exactly the power that you need. You always need some extra margin.

I might go with these choice as well, which one would be better? Out of these for my second choice i saw more good review with the Asus Tuf Gaming VG259QM and the BenQ Zowie XL2546, along with the Alienware 25 AW2521HF, but i never use these monitor before so i would be able to tell. Does anyone here use any of these monitor currently or in the past. Thanks

The 2047 MB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Super that I've been using for several years is entirely satisfactory for running TSW2.

I have not used any of those, look them up on tomshardware to see if there are user reviews for them.

Sure, but the top end 3080/3090 cards with 3 power connectors only draw 450W max. The 3070 will be under 300W; a good quality 650W or 700W PSU will be sufficient.

Take note of a lot of high powered small form factor systems - a lot of them use Corsair's SF-series in 600 or 750W, often with a high end CPU (5900X/5950X) and a 3080 or 3090.

For once, I chose wisely when I last upgraded my GPU :)

When the RTX 3 series was about to be launched, it was given so much hype about how advanced they were and how cheap they would be that there was a frenzy of RTX 2 series owners to unload theirs via ebay secondhand.

I managed to get an immaculate RTX2080ti for £400, before the lack of supply became apparent and the scalpers moved in to increase the prices to ludicrous levels. Looking at comparison websites detailing the RTX2080ti versus the 3 series, my 12gb card is almost as fast in real terms as an RTX3080, which is still £1k plus, so the only significant upgrade for me would be the 3090, which is currently worth a lot more than my car ! Bad enough, but it will be worth only a few hundred within just a two or three years.

All computer hardware and software purchases are poor long term investments, inevitably depreciating with the rapid advance in speed and capacity. Some categories are worse than others, but GPUs are probably the worst, witness the value of something like a 1080ti now, compared to new, after only a couple of years or so.

I'm mainly into flight sims, so I had to upgrade earlier because of their extreme demands on hardware, so the RTX2080ti, i9 9900k cpu, 32gb RAM, and a 2tb NVME ssd drive can run TSW2 at max settings on my triple 27 inch monitor setup.

You're quite right Callum, my mistake, the 1080's are still holding up quite well.
I was basing my comment also on the sudden rush of secondhand GPUs when the 3 series was announced and I picked up my 2080ti, the 1080ti's then were going for £200-£300, compared to the £400 that I paid for my 2080ti.

And those small form factor machines often use the mobile chip sets which are not as hungry or as fast. Don't skimp on the power supply. Spend another $50 and get a good one. You don't want to be on edge, especially if you're going to over clock, charge USB devices, run a web cam, microphone, etc, etc, etc. it all adds up very quickly.

There is a "refresh" for nvidia at the end of this year, and the 40XX cards are expected to arrive at Q4 2022.

I might ended up going with this one Asus Tuf Gaming VG259QM, after hearing lots of good comment and review from people online and talking to bestbuy employee. I am also going to go to Micro Center to ask and see it in person, hopefully they have one to test run and try out. If there is other recommendation, feel free to post it.

Uhh, no. Small form factor is considered any case under 20L, not just something like NUCs. Hence why I said 5900X/5950X with a 3080 or 3090. Using ITX boards with top of the range Z590 and X570 chipsets. Spend some time looking at builds in cases such as the NCase M1, Dan A4-SFX or FormD T1 and you'll see that these aren't workstations based on mobile technology and that you don't need an 850-1000W PSU to power them.

Overclocking is a different story, and you'd expect anyone undertaking such an activity is acutely aware of their power requirements. For someone who just wants to throw a 30-series card in their machine to play Train Sim World 2, nVidia and AIB recommended PSU sizing is fine - 750W for 3080 and 3090.

Obviously "small form factor" is a totally unambiguous term widely used and referenced by everyone, oh wait, it's not... refer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_form_factor and I did use the word "often" not the word "always".

Which completely ignores the point I was making - davidh0501 advising 850W PSUs for 3070s which is far more than required, when 750W supplies are more readily available, cost less and will power the card just as sufficiently.

I have a Ryzen 7 3700X, 16GB RAM and a Nvidia RTX 2060 Super Founders Edition.... The graphics are topnotch.... I recommend a AMD Ryzen Processor.... Is a little cheaper than Intel wtih the same specs.

fanta1682002 Amd use "Precision Boost 2"

"Boost performance when you need it
Precision Boost 2 automatically raises processor frequencies for supercharged performance when you need it most."

Intel and AMD use different names but the system is in use the same.
The Ryzen 7 3700X is for 99% the same as the Intel 9700k in performance. The diffrence between them in price is arround +/-50€!

I was advising 800+ as well as the preferred choice so I fully agree with davidh0501 . There isn't that much difference on price between a 750 and an 850. Once you start loading up the power supply with other things like phone chargers, card readers, headphones, microphone, etc. the power usage can be quite a lot more than your original power budget. If you over clock (and most motherboards will by themselves in a mild way) it can be more important. The other consideration is power supplies from most cheapie suppliers are very over-rated and something marked 600w at full load can probably only deliver 400w because they don't measure at full load for the specs.

Its a bit like buying a car, you could buy that little 1.2 litre four cylinder and nurse it up to highway speeds or you could step up a little and buy something that does it comfortably and isn't being trashed.

I went with the Corsair 850 exactly for that reason Paul, having killed several psu’s in the past.
Always good to have power in hand.

Same brand as me :). Yes I've killed enough PSU and had a poor one take out a brand new motherboard, CPU and RAM as it died too. That was costly. Never again. I always buy mid to top of the range with more power than I need.

It depends which model. The base 3060 draws a max 170W, and the power supply needs to be at least double that (so you ought to be OK with a 650W power supply, depending what else you're running, of course), whereas the monster 3090 draws up to 360W and is very unlikely to work from a 650W supply. I have a 650W power supply and run an RTX2070, which draws slightly more than a 3060.

If I was upgrading I would get a bigger one, however, give it a try, it shouldn't explode or anything. Look at your GPU and CPU with GPU-Z and CPU-Z - if you see them running at full noise (i.e. hitting and sustaining their advertised clock speed) then you're probably ok. If they are throttling back then they are likely starved for power. A while back in this thread I included a link to the plugs you'd need to run a 3000 series card - make sure your power supply has the connectors to connect to whatever card you choose.

Did you change your motherboard? I remember when we looked at the model you've got now it was PCIx3.0 which means a 3000 series card cannot be fully utilised by your machine since it needs PCIx4.0. Check the card specs - some PCIx4.0 cards will drop back to PCIx3.0 and some will insist on 4.0.

Well, depending on the quality of your power supply. ;) But yes, most should be fine.

This is a non-issue. All RTX 30-series cards are PCIe x16, and even PCIe 3.0x16 is not fully saturated by the cards. You would only begin to starve for bandwidth with PCIe 2.0x16 or 3.0x8, but even then it is only a slight bottleneck for the likes of an RTX 3090. An RTX 3060 or 3060Ti would be totally fine.

    Cheers

That is interesting, I've had significant improvement with the same card moving from a PCIx3 to a PCIx4 board with a very similar clock speed CPU. It could have been something else on the board that was the bottleneck.

It cannot have been the upgrade to a PCIe 4.0 board because your CPU, the i9-10850K, does not even support PCIe 4.0. On a 4.0-equipped board (e.g., Z590), it will fall back to PCIe 3.0. :)

Learn something every day, how about that. You found a knowledge gap, I thought it was only the board that needed to support the PCIe version. That is a bit of a bummer actually since I went out of my way to find a board that did PCIe 4 :(. Sad for the disappointment but thanks for correcting me.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But if it's any consolation, your 500-series board will go for more on the second-hand market when you do decide to switch platforms, especially in the coming years with faster and newer PCIe 4.0 SSDs. :)

Was that intended to be useful information, or a brag?

FWIW: My machine that recently died had an Radeon RX 5700XT - I bought an AMD card cos I thought I'd also use the machine with Linux. But I don't, so it wasn't the best choice of card. At 1440p, it's basically 90% maxed out doing 60fps with TSW2.

My new machine hasn't arrived yet, so I can't post performance comparisons until it does. But without the constraint of Linux support, I've gone GeForce RTX this time (3080 as a price/performance trade-off). I'll let you know how it works out (next week, hopefully).

I can also claim 'free agency'; not a Gates or Bezos, but I have no complaints. But I got here in part by exercising, not frugality, but at least a certain prudent restraint. Dropping high four figures into a toy every couple of years doesn't fit my notion of p.r.

I don't get too hung up on FPS, so as long as it looks to be running smoothly I don't care about FPS and tend to leave the graphics settings alone I just want to play the game not sit fannying about for hours trying to tweak 1 extra FPS out of it just so I can have a forum pissing contest about it.

Hehe it's ok. I know for five years time to check it out a bit more before committing :). Hopefully I will remember. We usually give away all of our cards, boards and CPUs either to family members or friends when their time is up for us. For people who don't play the latest games there is always life left in it when we want to uprade.

solicitr I bought my first computers (an Apple ][ and a PDP8/16) before I bought my first car and I have to say I spent less on the car even then. Today its a bit different :).
