Br Class 930?

  1. Hi thanks for looking.

As a young boy I remember that if you missed the last train from sheerness on sea, around half hour later a maintenance train would stop at the end of the platform and if you asked nicely the driver would let you hop in the cab and make a unscheduled stop at Queenborough to drop us off.

I'm just trying to explain this to my son who in this day and age isn't allowed in the cab of a moving train thanks to health and safety law!

Does anybody remember these trains? Was it a 930.

    Thanks.

  3. Oh I see Class 930 was not a particular class train. Looking through old pictures on the web it looks like it may have been a converted class 416. I remember it looking pretty much the same as the old thumpers i used to catch near my dads place but they were diesels. The maintenance train was electric.

The picture you linked is of 930 004, and if you look that up on the page I linked you can see it started life as a class 405 - unit number 4361
the class 405 wiki page is : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Rail_Class_405
you can definitely see the resemblance

  5. Oh yea. I see it also says at the bottom of the image i shared it was converted from a 405. They really did like to get their moneys worth out of them old units.
