Can someone please tell me what the yellow boxes are that are fitted to the outside of the running rails?
Interesting subject. Well worth investigating. Reduces wheel wear but can also contribute to wheel slip.
Thanks for your input. I know what flange greasers are, they are usually on a curve and they supply grease to the inside of the outer rail in the curve to stop the wheels from squealing and to reduce wear, both to the rail and the wheel flange. The boxes I was on about are little square ones and they seem to be associated with points. I have a suspicion that they are something to do with point heaters. Sorry, can’t work out how to do a screen shot. I’ve been told it’s F12, but on my keyboard that key is aeroplane mode off and on.
You'll have a 'Fn' key, probably between the windows button and the spacebar. Hold it down and press F12. Or you can just press the PrtSc button, and paste it (Ctrl+V) directly into the textbox.
Could be axle counters? But I agree with the others, we could do with a screenshot really since they could be any number of things.
Without a screenshot very abstract question. AWS ramps are yellow but in the “four foot”, centre of the track. Or is the OP referring to German or American routes?
Yes, these are the boxes I was on about. They look a bit small for point motors, but I must admit I don't see anything else that would fill the gap as a point motor. I thought they might be something to do with point heaters.
Now you mention it Terry, might be point heaters... Yep. http://www.railwayelectricalservices.co.uk/weston
The point heaters they have installed are the yellowy strips you can see fastened along the bottom edges of the rails not the yellow clamp lock box covers.
