I think it's better they did not update the in-game representation to this aspect. It would have broken their original scenarios, for starters, in addition to the wealth of other content. One who wants to update the signals can create a custom version of the route, akin to the North Wales BR Blue route which backdates the route to the 80s and is one of many projects by the now-deceased Nick Hudson (with Andy Freeman). Semaphore signals can be interesting. I ran Riviera in the 50s with the Western Hydraulics Class 42 scenario, and before my first stop, saw a distant signal with horizontal arm. This should mean you cannot proceed beyond the red signal that would be in front of the platform, protecting the station...but the signal was green, continue into the station. I don't think they work properly 100% of the time.
Actually, it’s not the case that a semaphore distant at caution means the very next ‘home’ will be at danger. What it means is that one of the signals it protects is at danger (remember there are potentially inner and outer homes, and starter(s)). So potentially you could encounter a distant at caution, a proceed aspect, and then a signal at danger. If you are not used to this, it can be easy to slip up, especially after a station stop!
In this case - and I'd have to go back to confirm the AI timing - I think a Class 35 pulled through there. But it might have been the following station where I saw that Class 35 pull through.
I’ll have to have a look too, to see if there is an issue or not. Potentially the aspect shown could be correct according to what I posted, but also the signal that was at danger pulled off by the time you get to it, so you’d be none the wiser!
Exactly, sometimes it's just a mechanism to force players to go by the speed limits and not try to speedrun the scenario because they have lunch on the stove.
Cyclone, I just had a go at the Class 42 Long Voyage route, and the caution aspect of the distant does seem to be in error, as you said. I have a recollection that some distants were always left at caution due to the nature of the line, but in this case I think that would be grasping at straws, and it's more likely to be a glitch! What a delight it is to see 35s: Anyway, to the signals in question. The distant: I quickly freecammed along to the next home: The subsequent home: The nearest train is quite far away, likely several signals distant:
You didn't, Cyclone did, it's what he does, in fact I've never known anyone derail (pun intended) and off topic threads as frequently and consistently as he, seriously check his past postings if you don't believe me.
Yup, that's exactly the one I was talking about. By the way, Peter, there are semaphones seen between Chester and Crewe. Heck, there is even a commentated video recently where they are pointed out to still be in operation.
Just FYI, I made a comment comparing malfunctioning semaphones on Riviera. I didn't intend to continue that conversation. It takes help to completely derail a discussion.
