The class 166 train which operates services from Reading to Gatwick airport and Redhill isn’t showing up to drive when I’m on London commuter timetables, I have the DLC installed.
Would you rather have good FPS without layer or bad FPS with layer? 8GB RAM is outdated and no longer sufficient, your console is simply too old and therefore there are often no layers or severe limitations for last gen consoles. In order not to abandon the old consoles, DTG has opted for such serious limitations.
Having thousands of the same train does not really impact memory which is why you still have all the 377 and 387 services. Once other trains get added in, even 1, like the 166, 313, 66, 375, 465, rare 43 it uses up a ton of memory since it has to load in everything about the train. It's also running in the background waiting to be loaded in, using up memory. Eventually causing out of memory crashes. Not just London commuter but also hma. The only way to experience the layers is to get a next gen console or a pc at the moment. There's a add on manager (was 64gb ps5 issue) coming that could lower memory usage and allow layers but that might not work or be a while
As rennekton#1349 says, the way the memory in game works is that you load up a train (which can be made up of several different cars, each of which is different so takes up memory) and that can then be replicated many many times and the only impact on memory right then is monitoring where they are and what they're doing. If you add in another type of train (again made up of different cars) then that's another load of memory, but again loads of those? not so much So when you have a 377 (made up of three different car types) and a 387 (four different car types) you already have 7 different assets loaded. Start adding in others and you can see that you end up with a lot of things loaded in memory and with older consoles having very limited memory space they do struggle
