Isn’t it strange how all these people from UK, US and all around the world have been able to have this conversation on this thread with everyone more or less understanding every word everyone else has written. That’s what I call English.

 

A private endeavour of an intensely politically active nationalist with some pretty outspoken views on how those nationalistic goals could better be achieved through language. Part of why he's often referred to as "The forgotten founding father", due to how much of an influence he was able to impose on the nascent United States.

Rather than do that, the simple, cheap option was used... we all have to accept the american version of English in the game now.

I think as long as it doesn't extend to changing labels on train interiors for example, or metric gauges where there would normally be miles, then I accept it could be localised by the community.

I'm also really hoping we might be able to mod in some nice lighting and rail arcs to older lines, since DTG won't do it because of the enormity of the task.

But that is exactly what DTG have done. Center is the correct spelling for one of the major localisations that the game is sold to. It’s just not the one you want.

I don’t particularly like US English either, but I’m used to it because I have to use it at work. It’s a non issue for me.

I think I might have got it wrong. Since they had artistic license maybe they were going for an inclusive approach, so we have the nod to British Railways heritage with the font, and we have the forward thinking "International English". If I were DTG I'd want as many to play and understand the game as possible.

 

Not necessarily all. It's a realistic simulator, therefore any diegetic use of spelling on signage, advertising, PIS boards, etc. should be localised to the spelling appropriate to the route.
Within non-diegetic game content such as the menus, it should simply be a globally applied language localisation toggle based on the user's selection (ideally defaulting to the user's system settings).

DTG market internationally they are fine using any language that they market to, and if the majority is US English, so be it. I don’t much like it either, but it’s something I‘ll see for 2 seconds in a video game. Not something to be bothered about.

Here's how to settle what 'international' means.
What does the UN use? After all it's the only body capable of determining a global standard, besides the superpowers and the EU.

The UN uses British English. Therefore it is the closest to an official "international English" you're gonna get. Best case scenario is that we get the option to flick between American and British English, worst case scenario is that we're stuck with American English, but at the end of the day, nobody dies over a couple of letters the (wrong) other way round, or cut out of the word (i.e. Color/Colour)

Here, many signs in English have the text translated into Spanish, Polish, or whatever printed directly below. Maybe DTG should include a helpful British translation of any overtly American English. I have a feeling the joke may go over the heads of some, though.

 

American consumers wouldn't accept a product produced by an American company to have all British spellings on it's labelling or instructions.

So, why should British people who object to a British company NOT producing it's product in it's own localised language have to accept it?

a simple glance over of Quora will explain why DTG have decided to pander to the US market and why the majority of UK players wont care (myself included), we arent precious over if a word is spelt with a "z" instead of a "s" or if a "u" is omitted.

 

A fictitious training centre based on a German track is not a “UK route”.

 

Maybe DTG should just change it’s company registration to be an American company, then you’ll all be happy.

That's just moving the goal post. You know they would complain about how unrealistic it would be, to have such a training track over there, and besides, they never would have all those European trains either. Yadadada

 

Because it’s not the language spoken or understood by the majority of players. I don’t speak for Germans, but while they‘d probably be more than happy for it to be labelled ‚Ausbildungszentrum, the majority of them can speak and understand English of either variety.

I work in a very multi cultural office and there are definitely more German speakers that can speak English, than English speakers that can speak German.

 

How about some English we can all agree on in a game of Pool or Snooker?

There are over 160+ English languages. 6 spoken in the US and 43 spoken in the UK https://www.translateday.com/how-many-dialects-does-english-have/ .Even Australian English is different ( different words, accents).Proper pronunciation and spelling simply depends on where your from, technically all are right. So no matter which is chosen somebody won’t be happy. That said I think the language on the signage should represent the language that the route is from. In the case of the Training Center/Centre I could care less because it is a fictional route. Honestly I care more about TSW3 working properly then which English language is used.
