I also want to be one of the first to post something here. I think that Natalie (the TSW community doesn't forget anyone) is definitely involved here too. Maybe we will make a "Catan" livery in TSW3! ;)

Congrats on being the first to post here!

I’ve personally never played Catan, so what better way to introduce myself to it than the same-ish group that makes trains and fish?

Can’t wait, teaser video looks really promising. We all miss Nat from the TSW side of the forum, but looking forward to supporting her and her team’s work with this. Best of luck!

Welcome along, folks! DTG Natster I'm sure will be passing by sooner or later. As we develop the forum we'll add in new bits and pieces so stick a 'watch' on the forum for more news :)

I have to confess that I was hoping for the classic analog board games with trains in the lead role :D

Covid / Post-Covid is a renaissance of board games, card games, and RPGs. Catan is a great proposition for the beginning of your adventure. The paper version is worth the sin - I keep my fingers crossed, DTG didn't fail during the conversion :D

...tried to do my best but couldn't do more with the 300 layer limit in Livery Designer. But I think the in-game advertising effect should come across. ;) I've also looked at a couple of screenshots in the meantime, looks very good, especially the many small details of the game world sections stand out!

Hi DTG JD and DTG Natster, I was excited when I read a few months ago that Catan was coming to console and even more so when it was announced that one of our TSW Community Managers was taking up a position within the Board Game Division of DTG.

My friends and I discovered the Catan board game about a year ago and playing it has been a pleasant way for us to socialise on a number of occasions since. Of course being the transport enthusiast I always strive towards Longest Road to attain Victory Points!

If you are looking for Beta Testers I'd be willing to assist. I have a basic grasp of the Catan game mechanics, but have an objective viewpoint treating every element of gameplay as a novice and have no preconceptions as to technical ability. For example - one of my bugbears with some of the Scenarios in TSW is that the instructions prompt the player to: Switch On Master Switch, Turn On Headlights, Select Forward... BUT it's raining and I'm not shown where the Wiper Switch is?

I'm more that happy to sign a NDA (and signed the Official Secrets Act in a previous job).

    Kind regards,
    Dan

Let's replace the roads with tracks and the settlements etc. with stations, yards, and so on. I'd be into that :)

Your work never fails to impress :D

I am surprised that we didn't go with Monopoly with a special focus on railroads as a monopoly. :D

A Steam version would be the one that everyone can use. I personally don't have a PS or an Xbox, and neither is worth the amount of money for the amount I would use it.

I still have the old 360 XBLA version of Catan, by Big Huge Games (A studio sadly closed down when the failure of their next title, Kingdoms of Amalur, bankrupted the publisher that had bought them)

It'll be interesting to see how the visuals and interface have been interpreted this time around for the latest tabletop to console conversion.

Ah. While this is unfortunate, I also know the Switch is not as graphically intense as the others, so having it off the list means the game can look and sound better from the outset.

It also saves me from being interested in a console version. :D

Generally, Switch ports are just somewhat, or sometimes HUGELY graphically downgraded versions of the original game. *Eyes Ark: Survival Evolved and how its Switch version runs at the resolution of the original 1989 Game Boy screen* - they in no way impact development decisions unless a game is developed primarily for the Switch and later due to popularity ported to other platforms, like Monster Hunter: Rise. Itself developed using a significantly graphically scaled back version of the MHW engine.

You seemed from the wording "having it off the list means the game can look and sound better from the outset" to be implying that not developing for Switch would mean the others would be better than they would had a Switch version been considered. Which is not the case, as Switch ports of multiplatform games usually start from a baseline of the quality of the version already developed for more powerful systems, and then downgrade that to get it to run on Switch. The game as a whole is developed for the most powerful systems, then scaled back versions are made with compromises to run on weaker hardware. With varying results *cough*Cyberpunk2077*cough*

Fair. I know I've seen Switch games that look like trash compared to the originals. I always questioned if they developed at the same time.

Usually in those cases the answer is no, but that's disproportionate due to the number of games that got ported to the switch which were already successes on other platforms prior to their switch version going into development. Often there's just no way to scale those games to the weaker hardware without significantly compromising the look and gameplay. (Outer Worlds, they did you DIRTY)

In the case of many smaller indie titles that don't push graphics very hard (As I have to imagine any videogame of a boardgame like Catan is likely to be, there's really only so many graphical bells and whistles you can put on wood, sheep, grain, stone, roads and towns before it begins to impede playability. After all, how important *is* fully path traced lighting on the wool you're trading, really?), they're often developed simultaneously for Switch, PC, other consoles, and in some cases IOS and Android, and all the versions look and play pretty much the same since that was the intended scope from the beginning regardless of what the capabilities of any individual device it's in development for are.
I genuinely imagine any hypothetical, never say never future Switch port would probably manage to essentially just be the same as the XBox/PS version running at 800p

In a couple of niche cases as I recall it gets really interesting because we get the old school parallel development scenario that has been almost unheard of since the 90s, where a wholly different dev studio is given the job of making a switch version that runs and looks VASTLY different to the versions developed for other consoles, using different graphical tricks to pull off a similar aesthetic and still get decent performance on switch.

Funnily enough, with this talk of Switch, I have had two different friends suddenly inform me this week that they just bought a steam deck. It seems a fair few folks are taking the opportunity of Valve finally having the supply to meet demand. It's going to be interesting to see where the handheld market goes in the next few years. I imagine Nintendo HAVE to have new hardware in the pipeline just over the horizon by now, and Valve could really do with offering an OLED screen to match Nintendo's one. It's interesting to see these two very different approaches side by side now. Nintendo has its impressive system selling exclusives, but Valve has basically the entire PC library.

Including, as I recall two versions of Catan on Steam, while one is available on Switch (Which may be the reason DTG are not developing a Switch version)

The Steam Deck discussion is interesting. I now have an incentive to earn my way to one of those JUST to try it with TS and TSW.

Welcome to the forum! I'm mainly active in the Train Sim World division, but meanwhile I'm also curious about this console implementation from Catan. Since the publication will take place in 2023, we will definitely find out more soon. ;)
