What about a DTG branded one for the training center ? I'm not sure if it would be much of use there, but DTG branding would be definitely fun to see.

While unbranded have been off the TSW table for a while now for better reasons, honestly. But for the switcher, guess there really is no other viable options to see it in modern routes compare to historic. And not many people will go an extra mile for using Creators Club either.
Guess it is better than nothing, sadly.

IDK, with how bad switching work is currently in TSW and with the limited offering that scenario planner has. I just dont see the Switcher appearing appropriately anywhere at the moment.

Actually, I think the best option would of been to included in the Holiday Express DLC as a 2nd locomotive and give it a freeroam scenario for that route.

Not if it's modern. The SW1000 is a museum piece, contemporary with the GP30 and now almost all of them are retired.

Absolutely, positively. A high-hood GP7 or 9 is an essential locomotive to have, for nearly any US route set before around 1980.

Would it be that costly or time-consuming to do liveries, though, especially since most switchers were variations on basic black anyway? Clinchfield's just isn't that hard; and it could be altered to read "Pennsylvania" or "Southern Pacific" as needed with very little effort.

Not to get completely off the whole amtrak switcher topic, but a GP7 high hood would be a great add on and as for Clinchfield in all reality the GP7(HH) should have been by default both the routes and mines shunter instead of the GP40 which if you think about most of those mines most likely could never afford to buy let alone maintain such a expensive locomotive.

Just for fun here's a weird loco pack combo idea.

The GP7(HH) and the HAYSI(F7B) double pack.
The HAYSI F7B was.a homebrewed F7B converted into a no frill shunter for the haysi mine.

Hmm. I thought you had put the kibosh on unbranded locos/ trains.
    Am I mistaken?
I've always thought they were a bad idea. If something can't be licensed, perhaps it shouldn't be in the game.

I just want to voice my agreement on this with the others. A high-hood GP7 is exactly what CRR needs. The SW would be nice, but a GP7 would be infinitely better to round off the timetable.

Where branded options make sense, I will always prefer to do that. If there's a massive demand for something and no possibility to do branded after trying, then maybe it's still ok to do it unbranded.

For an oddity like this where it would basically boil down to "do nothing" vs "do unbranded", it'd be something to consider. There are "unbranded" SW9's on rrpicturearchives, so it wouldn't be unprototypical to do something like that.

That's different to say doing a certain chicago railroad and taking the logo off.

I am not saying never do unbranded, i'm saying don't rush to it, it's not the first port of call, and if there are better / other options to look at, maybe do those instead and throw this one out to the back burner. Which may yet happen here.

I'm just exploring ideas to get this switcher back out, and it seems like there are no really decent options, other than something novel but unbranded.

    Matt.

Spot on and for NEC Trenton New Brunswick Rutgers University Newark NY Penn a loco pack combo idea can be
Amtrak GP15 comes with Viewliner II & Amfleet II
    Video

NJ Transit ALP-45DP with comet II-V. Can layer to the Raritan Valley Line if made into the game. Needs to have SDO otherwise all doors open. I have a picture of Comet II-V 5244 at Annandale.
    20230217_203731.jpg
    Option 2
    Amtrak Avelia Liberty
NJ Transit Arrow III or MLV III with Power Car. Power Car will not run on the RVL NJCL South of Long Branch. An odd feature is that the MLV III Power Car can be operated by MLV I-II Cab cars making it carry 1552 passengers.

Just a thought, but maybe a semi fictional leasing SW9 with the DTGX reporting marks?

You already do that as a stand in for TTX stock using a similar scheme to TTX, but branded as DTGX, so maybe something similar for the Switcher?

Have you been out by the tracks in real life ? And I don't mean that sarcastically or to be an a$$.
The fact is (at least here in North America) oddball & off brand equipment shows up quite frequently and unexpectedly all over the place on any line. As railfans we find this extremely rewarding. Like easter eggs in real life. And like AI we can't control what happens in real life either.
Now, yes, I do get your point, and I can even sympathize with it as a perfectionist / OCD kind of person, and it is very valid and should be taken into consideration, but I honestly don't find that to be a major issue that would ruin my game. Just like in real life I would think "that's odd, that doesn't belong here, it's a long way from home, but kinda cool",,, and carry on with my day (game) having seen something unuausl and interesting. When I play Pen Corr (and I have many F40ph2C reskins dl'd) I get quite a variety of "rogue" trains showing up at terminal and along the line. I find it quite enjoyable to see the variety of trains available to customers. But you have to take the "California blinders" off to appreciate this otherwise you might have heart attack from inconsistency and staunch adherence to a singular program.

Hey no issue with the odd guest loco on a route, just not every run, for example I downloaded a Hanson liveried 66 from creators club but when it was appearing on every UK run I completed it became immersion breaking for me. Had it been say once every 8-9 runs I'd have found it a nice Easter egg like you say.

Unfair opposing comment. You didn't consider my whole post by making it - I did explain how this could be done, and it mimics reality. Maybe not 100% but there is precedent.

This might be an example one of those sorta oddball locomotives you speak of,and strangely enough it served on the clinchfield route specifically at the HAYSI mine.It was a F7B converted into a poor mans switcher.but i dought it ever traveled to far from it's mine and unfortunately it's currently rusting away on a siding at a Pennsylvania museum last time i checked.

For switchers branding is not very important. At leats not to me. In general I think we need more switchers. They are great fun to drive and always have interesting tasks with lot of variety. I have no idea how it works in the US, but there may be loads of small railway companies renting these switchers or doing switching tasks as subcontractor.

I know it is completely off topic but till the fifties of last century you had local delivery trains, bringing freight to various stations along a line. It is a gameplay I have seen in TSC but unfortunately not yet in TSW. Now we have some old freight wagons created for SoS and NTP, it might be an interesting gameplay pack for WSR, which still is the most beautiful TSW route for me.

For the US scene this is where Run 8 definitely wins out with the industry function, though ironically that game also has no dedicated switching/shunting locos.

Yes... smaller railways (and industries/terminals) often own/use older equipment retired by the big boys. Also, many lease companies exist now offering older refurbished units, though many are now of the larger types vs the former little switchers. As Solicitr has mentioned quite correctly they are going the way of the dinosaur, but not completely impossible to still find in operation under private ownership and sometimes in the most unexpected places.

Probably the only Railroad in the modern era to still use a ton of switchers is the Union Railroad in Pittsburgh. However, I'd doubt DTG would ever be able to get them in game.

I think an unbranded switcher would be a good idea if it is implemented properly. It would need it's own timetables, or at the very least, sub in to existing switching operations across multiple routes. probably wouldn't have it sub in for AI traffic though, that way the only way you see it is if you decide to play it. my only problem is when I hear unbranded switcher I'm imagining something, not tied to any route, that can only be used with scenario planner, and since the current scenario planner has no way to create a switching service, that would be pointless.

Again, the problem with an actual switcher of the SW or NW series, even an MP, is that it really would only be in-place on vintage routes (except for a handful of VERY specific locations like Ivy or San Jose). It seems that almost universally now switching duties are given to Geeps and older road engines; the game's current roster of GP38s and SD40s in switching roles is fairly accurate.

And the thing wrt vintage routes - I use the plural in hope that Clinchfield will eventually have company - is that a GP7 or -9 would be much cooler.

And that's why I wouldn't have it sub in for AI. If they did an unbranded switcher, it's already sacrificing realism for having a loco some people enjoy driving. though it's not impossible, I see unbranded switchers once in a while on virtual railfan videos. get the loco in for those who want to use it, but avoid it being used for AI traffic to preserve realism when you don't. I agree, high hood GP7 or 9 would be cool, but personally I prefer dedicated switchers. Ideally we would get both at some point.

How about a release to some anniversary ? TSW get's 5 in march, why not make it a DTG or anniversary branded one and release it for Sand Patch Grade ? Maybe together with a route upgrade ?

If there are no ideas to make anything official or realistic with it that fit the loco and existing content and do not require a ton of work, I think something for the anniversary or training center might be the best way to go.

A U-boat wouldn't add any additional gameplay, just sub for the SD40. A Geep though could be used for lots of shunting services.

Most mines would be sporting a no frill GP7 not a enormous tank like a U36.Honesty none of the clinchfield mines should be useing a SD40 or F7 but dtg only put them on the route leaving no other options but them for mine work.

If Clinchfield receives any attention in the future it should include correcting the missing banking com that has been an issue since the route was launched.

You are correct and however some yards in the CSX system use a Switcher like EMD MP15T video is from the Evansville yard Indiana

For NEC NYC New Brunswick Rutgers University Robert Wood Johnson Trenton route I can probably see this happening EMD MP15T and SW1000R Amtrak pack complete with Oak Island Yard and Sunnyside Yard switching gameplay. EMD MP15T Newark Oak Island Yard SW1000R Sunnyside yard alongside a newer Genset if made.

Except for Amtrak in DC, most US railroads have their switchers in a "run-to-failure" mode- no point to scrapping them, but not worth repairing if they break (Amtrak is the exception here because passengers coaches are light). They will all be gone in a few years; Geeps and older 6-axles are doing most of the switching work now.

Isn't it sad that the closest thing to a GP7 we have gotten so far is a GP9 on static display at the horseshoe curve route. But if some of you remember the first US cabooses we got where also on static display on the sand patch grade route.Which the really wild element here is that the first useable caboose would appear on the clinchfeild route. The same route that really needs a GP7 or perhaps GP9 alternative someday.

That's not the type of GP9 i'm referring to,i ment a high nose GP7 or GP9 but the CN loco use to be one.Check out the GP9 on static display at the horseshoe curve route. That a highnose.
