I usually do most of this forum's browsing when I get up in the morning, and for the past two days, it's been unusable due to the sheer amount of spam. I can't be doing with it, so until DTG include some kind of captur measures for new accounts, I'm gonna leave it alone for a while. I'm sick of wading through pages of utter [removed - JD - language] to find actual posts. See you all gain soon I hope. The only thing I can be sure of happening though, is this post will be removed because it's got the word [removed - JD - language] in it.
This is by no means a dig at anyone, but a genuine question and as this is the latest of this kind of post, I thought this may be an appropriate place to ask. Why do people make posts announcing their intention to leave the forums? Are they hoping someone asks them not to? Do they believe they need to let us know just in case someone reports them missing? I really am curious. Why not just step away and come back as and when you want?
Removed all these, and re-flagged with the DTL team. We tried something new, which evidently hasn't worked. Just as an FYI - adding things like captchas, post delays, new player moderation - they would take a little time to implement, so we're trying to find a more immediate solution. Also - please go lighter on the language. Understand the frustration, but this is a forum for all ages.
Shame. Fun fact, it almost never works when you try to include language out of frustration people understand! The hard feedback is useful in my opinion. You should be able to rely on notifications, so if you post a couple questions, or somesuch. Same about specific threads. Let me be Captain Obvious. Because they care, and they want to have a hard statement. They hope they can fix it. Imagine you just pack up and leave your wife and kids. Versus you go home, sit down, and say that you're borderline. Sure, some people call it bluff, and then when you leave, they have a surprised face. Games.
Wouldn't quite say it's like walking out on your family. Its more like not reading a particular newspaper or watching a particular TV show any more. Its not going to make a blind bit of difference to all the other readers or viewers whether you do or don't. It's a little bit like the kid who owned the football when I was younger. If things weren't going his way then it was a case of "It's my ball and I'm taking it home" meaning the rest of us couldn't play anymore. But in this case it's not their ball so if they don't want to play then just go home. Don't make a fuss and leave the rest of us to carry on with our game.
It's only fair towards other members of the community - that we more or less have - to announce taking a break, instead of just disappearing. Some people might care.
Because some people, maybe even you, have friends and people they pass info between. For somebody to simply just stop posting without a comment might make people wonder if they are ok away from this forum. Pookeyhead has a point that there should be some way for DTG to stop the spammers reaching this forum.
A fair point, but why not just let any friends know you're taking a break, it's not difficult to create a conversation to multiple people, rather than taking out a full page advert in The Times or whatever other chip wrapper you may read?
For future reference, if you click on the spammer who's posting all of the weird messages and go to their profile, you can click Report to let DTG know there's an issue and Ignore to simply remove all of their posts from your forum view. It takes a few seconds, then you can carry on browsing as normal and don't have to go anywhere. Spoiler alert: nobody cares.
Not making a fuss just curious and trying to get an insight as to why people feel the need to make such posts, which do appear quite frequently. Is it something to do with the social media society we live in today where people constantly yearn for likes and approval?
Take it easy Pookey - why take it personally? Can only give one advice - free yourself from being affected by the actions of others. See you soon hopefully
Seems the Chinese spam bot problem isn't just affecting this forum, as the Rail UK forum suffered the same problem early this morning (though the mods/admins purged all the spam posts by 7:30am). I can only guess the bot is attracted to forums discussing anything related to railways
A town's administration not far away from my home got hacked recently - they're just setting up 800 PCs from scratch here. I know political statements should not be discussed here, but I do hope the West will stand united against the attacks coming from the East.
In case anyone messages me, and doesn't get a reply. It's just the same as putting a message on your voicemail to let people know you are not in the office for a few days, so they will not expect a reply straight away if they leave a message. Stop reading too much into it The general forum appears to be spam free this morning, so either the spambot has been sent somewhere else, or DTG have sorted it. Good.
Thanks for explaining your reasons, I wasn't reading anything into it, just interested as i personally couldn't see any reason why such a post would be necessary. Personally, I've never used voicemail, if someone wants to speak to me so desperately they will try again or there are so many other methods to contact someone nowadays.
I hope you won't leave. I mean, if people get fed up and leave, it means the spammers won. What concerned me is newer players who might have actually came to join during the mess, saw the spam, and turned around to leave immediately.
I haven't seen any spam probably because we are 12hrs ahead of the UK. Now 9:41 pm Friday evening here.
