So we in the Uk you can have a sign with two speed limits, one for freight and one for passenger. I have a question of what the 37/7 pulling the Electrostar would come under? It has access to the Electrostar’s 3 step brakes and is obviously not a freight train, so would it obey the freight or passenger speed limit?
My gut would be to say this is an ECS move which can run at a passenger speeds. But does the speed limit signage for the higher speeds state MU (multiple unit) or similar. If it does then go tor the lower speed as you're a loco hauled ECS.
Dont think it does say MU, just the upper and lower speed limits, i’d assume its okay to run at passenger speeds because it has passenger braking
I was curious about this and it was actually cleared up whilst I was watching one of dadrails streams, who if you don’t know is a freight train driver in the south east of england. From what I remember he said as long as the brakes are all fully functional and you have the passenger units brakes functional, then you can run at the full line speed
Well, from playing various scenarios and timetable runs with the ROG 37/7, it appears to have a max speed limit of 75mph. I found that even if the line speed was 90mph, the red marker on the HUD never passed 75mph.
Today's drag from Ely to Newport (Class 317's for scrap) is timed for 75mph maximum, which I assume is the permitted maximum for a ROG 37. https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:K05030/2023-03-22/detailed
Here's the Dad Rail stream where he clarifies it. If the consist is fully fitted then you can operate up to the linespeed "for passengers" and light loco. The run is classed as "5xxx" meaning ECS rather than any freight run class and then refer to the VMAX of the consist, which in this case is down to the class 37. The top speed of the electrostars is higher
I always thought 37s top speed was 90mph with the exception of the CP7 bogied 37/3's so I can only assume that due to age they arent being pushed to max speed and limiting them to 75mph.
I looked it up (on wiki) and that says 90, not sure what's been put in game as the upper limit, but it may be wrong given they wouldn't normally go above 60 on most freights they operate
Class 37's had a design speed of 90mph. That would have been necessary when they worked Class 1 expresses on the Eastern Region such as Kings Cross-Cambridge. However running at such speeds would put a strain on these engines so their maximum speed has been reduced to extend life. 37884 will be 60 years old in November and there is no endless supply of spares.
Wikipedia actually says only a few units are geared for 90mph. Most of the surviving today are geared for 75mph max.
I'm not sure if their allowed speed has been changed, even if they can't actually reach that speed. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can enlighten us
