can you not drive from London to say scotland on this sim, or is it just limited routes you can do when you purchase them. New user here.

No. Each route DLC is independent from the others. Some DLCs might add some layers (train services) to other DLC, but that's it.

    Limited routes I'm afraid.

the developers decide "let's make a route that goes from here to here with these trains on it" and then make the route (obviously this is oversimplified).

Most routes are between 30-50 miles long.

These forums do have a suggestions section where you can recommend the East and West Coast Mainlines if you wish.

Also welcome, I hope you enjoy the game.

EDIT: If you do want to drive from London to Scotland, try Train Sim Classic (PC only). The community can make and merge routes as they please, so it may be worth trying.

This is not a full, open world game so no you cannot drive from London to Scotland
Each DLC is "it's own world" so where each DLC says it starts and ends is where you can drive from and to
Also note, that if the Passenger Info Screens (PIS) in a DLC say that trains go somewhere "off the map" that doesn't mean you can drive there in game, those trains may continue off the map as AI
