The amount of useless and pointless polls recently spammed in the forums is quite annoying, and i’m sure other agree, especially considering the community voted for them to go ages ago, yet dtg brought them back. We’re still getting pointless polls like ‘will you read the next roadmap:|’ seriously?? it’s just sort of annoying and unnecessary imo.

Maybe an option to have them moderator approval? But yes they are getting a bit tedious particularly as we know DTG will pay little attention to most of them.

Maybe time for DTG to test the waters again and have another poll, about the polls :)

    This.

Sure, many people are posting silly posts. Should we prohibit posting new topics as well?

A good balance is a moderator approvement. I don't mind polls with mutliple answers and well made arguments but "yes" or "no" polls are most of the time useless.

    Yes, that’s very true. :)

  7. The phrase "throwing the baby out with the bath water" springs to mind.

Self moderation is generally preferred but perhaps there's space for a deeper justification or approval process.

Also generally we ourselves often provide the oxygen that keeps a fire burning, whereas simply disengaging or ignoring often means such threads wither and die to be lost in the bottomless pit of the forums.

    So....

To talk about irrelevant and useless polls..... you make... an irrelevant poll.

    So yeah - Hypocritical much.

I think though polls should be used more sparingly. I only use them for rare things - Mostly train wars and the odd "Do you think this suggestion should be added" and whatnot.

Ironically, this poll is the reason why they should be at least moderated. The question is slanted towards the OP's opinion.
Perhaps " Polls in the forum? Yes/No " would have been better.

If people can't learn how to use polling, they should not be allowed. Personally, I never vote.

Here's my verdict on the topic of polls:

    My vote:
I voted No because polls can be handy if used properly

    Yes argument:
Those who voted 'Yes' don't want polls to feature because of the misuse of them by some users on here which deems the feature pointless to some

    No argument:

Those who voted 'No' want polls to feature even if certain users misuse the feature and suggest they should have some moderation to some extent for the feature to stay

    My verdict:
Personally, I rarely use polls unless I want an opinion on a particular topic e.g. my What Makes a 'Perfect' Creator's Club Scenarios thread I made a few months back but other than that, I haven't used a poll since

NOTE: This is my personal opinion on the topic and some users' opinions may differ from mine so if you disagree in any way, that's alright because I understand everybody is entitled to an opinion :)

Polls are much better than to have the 6th to 7th Topic about TSW4

Agreed. There was talk they would be moderated but it doesn’t seem that way at present.

Polls have uses, don’t like them don’t respond to them, no need to take away a use for others.

I don’t think it’s the actual poll facility itself that’s the problem (if it even is a problem) I think it’s the nature of some of the polls that are “questionable” to say the least. As pointed out earlier, ones that are well thought out and constructive can highlight things/trends that can be useful. Simple, yes or no polls are generally ( but not strictly) of little use, especially if the topic is of low importance/ interest.
Saying people shouldn’t respond if they don’t like them is a valid suggestion, but we all get tempted from time to time if we are irritated by something.
Anyway, that’s just my opinion. If you don’t agree, I’m happy to put it to a vote lol (joke, honestly). :)

    That's a great idea!
It would mean there would be a lot less contention between people posting. :D

I'd say have a sub forum for polls, so those who want them can poll to their heart content, for the rest of us we never need to set eyes on them again.

I agree but the same principle do just don’t answer poll you don’t like cab still apply, and some of the less constructive polls shouldn’t be any reason the constructive ones can’t be made.

it’s a bit self inflicted to say “it’s not a good poll so instead of one there’s non”

Now I thought to reply to this, when I put my poll 'will you read the roadmap" I didn't know it will get a attention and if you have a problem about my poll maybe tag me?
Edit Nd it was the August roadmap forum what I made not DTG.

Polls are good if they have been well thought out, which many are, but then you do have the pointless ones such as that reading the roadmap one, which add nothing much and are frankly pointless. The good thing is they are not compulsory to take part in so you can very easily ignore the shoddy ones, meaning that they don't have to go all together. I think it was Vern who mentioned it above but a moderator approval may well be a good compromise.

I don't see why polls should be treated any differently from regular posts. I don't find a bad poll any more annoying than a bad post. I'd like to treat them equally.

I Remember some of the Forum Posts in the past...
"If you dont like the DLC "X", dont buy it!!!"...

    Mhhh... ok...

If you dont like Polls, skip it! (dont vote and ignore the Thread with it)
Its easy...similar to not buy a new DLC.

Polls can be useful and even fun sometimes when well constructed, so personally I wouldn't get rid of them.

However there are polls where the options seem to be angled to get a certain result or just don't make any sense. Maybe as stated above they could be moderated or have a sub forum.

I agree, polls should be kept - they can be really useful at times, for example the big NY-Trenton thread had a poll that clearly showed how much the community wanted the route's issues, such as the limited timetable etc, to be addressed etc. It's a great way for DTG to see quick feedback from their most loyal/experienced players of TSW (those on the forums).

But, maybe there should be a limit of how many polls can be done per user per weekly/monthly basis though.

Polls are fine. Everybody has their own personal right to be annoyed by them, find them tedious, enjoy them, discuss them, and everything else that forum software offers, but insisting that they are removed because you personally dislike them for whatever reason is selfish and narrow minded. As evidenced by the replies the dislike is not universal and last I looked this isn't a democracy, but rather a website which is owned by DTG on which everyone is a guest

Well, during the hiatus when polls were not permitted, I don't recall a great swell of requests for their return.

Maybe just requiring the header " Poll " would be OK. Then we wouldn't have to open the thread. I think some pollsters are already doing this, to their credit.

Moderation would be OK too, except that it would burden the CM's with making subjective/selective decisions which they may not be comfortable with. They already have enough reading to do, I suspect.
