I don't understand that. TSW3 doesn't come near other games with way better lighting, and way higher polygon limits on 9th gen consoles. Why does it always sound like TSW is some game that can only be run perfectly once we have obtained quantum computing for personal computers?
I’m a bit confused? If they can’t optimise on UE4, how would they manage with UE5 or is UE5 easier to optimise things? Surely it’s in their interests to get the most out of the Unreal Engine?
They haven't even taken full advantage of UE4 yet and switching engines will probably cause more problems than it fixes so unless they have a a very good reason to upgrade I think UE4 is fine for now. (I'll probably copy and paste this comment every year when a new game is coming out)
I think Train Sim Universe is an excellent title for the next generation of Train Simulation. How would the Train Sim universe be different from Train Sim World!!.
Unfortunately DTG don't have a mega $300 million USD budget. Development takes time. But I enjoy TSW3 it is the best!!
I'm looking forward to the poll that asks if we want every route in the world in the game at perfect photo-realistic graphics, and for DTG to pay us each $1m to play it. Honestly, wishlisting is one thing, but presenting something as a poll suggests that if enough people vote for something, it will happen. Simply by a few people voting for a poll on UE5 doesn't make it any more or any less practical (or impractical) to implement. If in the opinion of the DTG, UE5 would make a difference significant enough to warrant the investment of time and resources in implementation (and the risk of things going wrong, or creating an even bigger divide between new and legacy DLCs), then they will do it. If not, then they won't. It's great to discuss the merits and demerits of this or that, and people have done that, but let's not delude ourselves that polls on issues like this can make any material difference.
It was just a way to see what people's thoughts were on the subject. It wasn't me suggesting it would happen if there was enough votes. I was just curious.
I’m not bothered either way with polls, but to be fair Nathan never suggest that this poll would turn into a reality, I don’t know how you formed that opinion? I would agree certain polls recently have implied it, but not this one. He just asked a simple question and what people’s thoughts were on it, nothing wrong with that in my mind.
That's fair - to explain more where I see the difference between this and another poll on, say, where would you like the next German route to be? TLR - I just don't think this is a valuable question to ask in a poll, but the function is there, so people are free to ask what they will! Implementing UE5 and the results that would give is something that I'm pretty sure very few people who might vote in the poll will have a meaningful working knowledge of. I've noticed in other threads - of which there have been plenty - that on one hand quite a few people seem to look at UE5 in other games and think therefore it's relevant to apply the same assumptions to TSW. Unfortunately, it just doesn't work like this. It's hard to find a really good comparison, but it's not like translating a text from one language to another - where there might be a few subjective differences between translations, but broadly you'd expect a like-for-like copy. With videogame code, it's more like comparing two different makes of car. Even though they're both hatchbacks, have four wheels and an engine, good luck trying to use Ford parts/software on a Nissan. Anyway, the point is that there's very little actual code that would transfer between two games in the same genre made by different companies; so while it's tempting to say "Company (A) did (x) with UE5, that would be amazing for TSW," it makes assumptions that in reality cannot be made - because the other game will work differently, utilise assets in different ways, use the off-the-shelf settings or bespoke engine modifcations in different ways (Simugraph, for example). So the problem with the poll is that it's like saying "Do you think we will get an upgrade to a Nissan engine in our Ford hatchback?" Sure, with a whole bunch of work it could be made to work, but broadly-speaking it's a pointless opinion to ask for... because only DTG would be really qualified to know if/how it would wor... and none of us can actually *know* what difference it would make. Of course, anybody can ask a poll about anything, and I'm sorry if I came off snippy. I didn't mean to offend - but my point was really that there are questions that are great for opinions ("Next route, next loco, more varity of passengers, etc") because we can all have a view on it without needing specialist understanding. I hope that makes a bit more sense.
Hi Phil, good response and I take your point about polls, they are like marmite - you either love em or hate em but they are there and can be used if people wish. Your explanation of UE and upgrading goes to highlight the difference between those with technical knowledge and those of us without. I always thought 5 must be better than 4, but as you point out that’s not the case or indeed the issue. I think we all want a great TSW and hopefully we will get something near to that with the next announcement, but I’m not holding my breath lol
The job adverts that DTG currently have on their website mention working with both UE4 and UE5. Do with this info what you want but I think it speaks volumes about what is to be announced soon.
Oooooh! That's big! That really does speak volumes of upcoming stuff!!! Maybe there is currently a preservation crew like team currently converting routes to UE5 to be ready for when the first route using UE5 comes out? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I don't know. It would be expected that new employees would need to be familiar with the newer version of UE. It could be just future proofing. Plus I'm sure the current coders are being trained in UE5 since it is actually being used in Chatham to some extent even now. Doesn't mean that the whole game is being shifted in less than 2 weeks. If you're right I'll eat my Cubs hat. Well, maybe just lick it a couple of times.
It's not the first time UE5 has been mentioned in the job adverts, that happened a long time ago, then they reverted to just saying UE4 again. I suppose it depends on which part of the coding process they need new people for. If this new release is UE5 then the first core development would have started a long time ago and the rest of it building on that as time went by. Then whatever content needed changing for compatibility etc. Who knows what they've been up to behind closed doors. Maybe all the Devs are now UE5 wizards. We shall see.
there are two things why an upgrade to UE5 has, well... negative results. - I don't think UE5 will make a difference in how TSW works, and if it'll be any better, it's basically useless - it'll be a hard time for people who use mods, because all mods that we have for TSW are made for UE4.26, but if DTG upgrades the game to UE5, we'll lose all the good community-made stuff... enhancement packs, soundmods, I don't want to lose all that I believe this has been said already but didn't want to read through all replies, just throwing in my opinions here
As much as I want train sim world to be in unreal engine 5 I don't see it happening If we do get a TSW-4 it will only be on unreal engine 4. The only upgrade we will get is the graphics. If we are talking about generation 8 support I would see it only supported until after Train Sim World 3. Then we will have generation 9 support only till then only time will tell!!.
I mean URE 5 is in early stages and putting it in to TSW will make the game worst just think about BLM for instance how bad that was and lets say upgrading it to URE 5 will be like a PC from the 90s (bad) plus URE 5 is more for big games Fortnite BioShock 4 and Rocket league. Now I'm not saying TSW is a big game but what I am saying is that they have a lot more time then Dovetail and more workers. So no I don't think URE 5 will be a good choice.
I agree URE 5 is in early stages also you didn't get to hear what I actually meant in my comment that is Unreal Engine 5 isn't really necessary for the future of Train Sim World. Unreal Engine 4 is the best engine to use until Dovetail games are already to use Unreal Engine 5. (In my opinion) TSW Could get bigger with more Locations, Routes and Features so Unreal Engine 5 is a possibility because it's requested by many TSW fans (myself not included) but it could be a long while before we see Unreal Engine 5. I'm not saying that it will happen but it's fun speculate right?
This is no reason not to progress. If any mods don’t work then the mod creators can redo them or they can be lived without. They are only used by a tiny minority of players anyway. It’s not a big consideration in deciding on an engine upgrade. The engine will be upgraded at some point so the earlier it is done the fewer mods will need upgrading, as more mods will inevitably be made between now and when it happens. It is happening now though, so that last part is a moot point. I mean it might not be happening now, but I’m certain it is. There’s no reason for a new game only one year after the last unless the change is a huge one with big benefits. I guess DTG saw just how much more could be achieved. They even sold the company to the big boys to raise the capital to pay for the upgrade. It’s all slotting into place. They may even call it TSW5 because it is based on UE5. Skip TSW4 as a title. Stranger things have happened.
Don't think mods will be something that would be considered. Don't see DTG embracing mods as a plus. Colossal order who does embrace mods breaks mods in Cities Skylines with every update. The money for DTG is in consoles so mods probably don't really matter in the decision making.
