Is there any surefire way of relinquishing control of a train when you enter free roam at the end of a service? Often, even if I go a long way away, it expects me to pick up the next service, and if I don't, it stays there, which obviously messes up the timetable.

It shouldn't do that. Is it like not departing at the right time or other traffic not moving?

So I had issues with this myself. I tried numerous different things and none work. So what I found that works is you start the next services and just walk away. Within less than two minutes you will get asked if you want to give up the service and you say yes. It might not be practical but I was here asking the same questions and didn’t really get any responses so that’s what works more. To be honest most players don’t do roam but air do. Sometimes I do 6 hours on BML and that has worked for me.

So for example I ran an ICE from Bremen to Oldenburg. Having completed the service, I returned to free roam, and it said "service starts at 22:29" - that service being an ECS return.I went to the opposite corner of the station, and even boarded a train as a passenger (my intention), but it was still giving me instructions for the ECS service after the train set off - until the train I was on got a red signal, with "my" train in its path.

I'll try what MAX1319 says- but maybe there should be a special key to do it.

Tricky one this. It shouldn’t just stay there (as pointed out above) but it usually does. The obvious exceptions are those services that stand you up out of the driver’s seat at the end because an AI has to take over, and then the challenge is to successfully exit the train before the AI driver drives off with you trapped inside.

Have you tries getting out of the seat before your service ends? That works for me.

I tried that myself many times and it doesn't work in TSW3. That worked before in TSW2.
the only method that has worked for me in TSW3 is grabbing the next service, then walking away ,after two minutes it will ask you if you want to give up service and you press yes. the AI takes over. I usually like to run services for hours so I have seen first hand that not all DLC act the same. for example in London commuter if you just jump into another train to start another service, The AI won't take your previous service. Now you won't know because you have already departed and unless you go back and look you in map view. will see that train still at the station. This only started happening after TSW3

This feels like a fairly important bug then, as it is nice to do continuous shifts, and this kind of ruins it.

it needs to be looked at. once you end your service and then enter into free roam, the trains should be taken over by AI. Unfortunetly it doesn't work that way at the moment. hopefully this can be fix in the future

I'm sure a "give up service" button in the pause menu can't be hard to implement...

If I remember correctly, the "god menu mod" has the option to let over the service to an AI, the functionality is already in the game if that is the case.

The only ways are get rid of your task list:

    1. Taking over a static train
    2. Taking over another a.i train.

If you are not in the driver seat of your actual tasked train a.i spawnes, but seems to have trouble since you as player are still tasked.

So here is an example of this
so that doesn’t work in BML.I have ran into his issue many times in London commuter. I give you an example of a service I just did.. I selected service 1M55 Brighton to London Victoria on Gatwick express. Once I got to Victoria the trip finished and I selected free roam. I then proceeded to select another service, this time was the southern 1C32 13:04 service from Victoria to Portsmouth harbor &Bognor Regis. The previous train which was now going to Gatwick at 13:00 never moved. You can check the pictures out yourself. This might not be the case in other routes but in BML the only way to hand this off to AI correctly is to start the next service then walk away. About two minutes later it will ask you if you want to give up service. You hit yes and the AI will take your service over.

Sure, the menu bar is also an option to make a takeover by a.i. (abandon your service)

I tested my solution on many routes, but not on every single one. For me a practical solution would be a menu (similar to the one if you contact the signaller), just to manually abandon your service.

I often stay more than 1 service in the timetable and want to change trains either to do another run or to just mess around. All 3 solutions are not really perfect, for the "abandon service" you have to wait 30s, a static train is not always there in place, also another driveable service is not always there.

I really suggest a possibility to make a forced abort of a player service and give it back to a.i.

I know I am late to the game but did you ever upgrade to TSW 4 and if so is this still an issue? You play the BML the exact same way I do and it is such a problem. I haven't upgraded and this is an issue that will never be fixed on TSW 3 but hoping they got on top of this now. It isn't always practical to wait 10/15 minutes for a service to start just to give it up to AI eventually
