Hello everyone, please post your feedback relating only to the current build version 75.4b here. If you wish to discuss things not relating to this beta, please use the other forums.

    What's Included/Changed

This first Beta includes the upgraded implementation of the Lighting, 3D Skies and 3D weather engine, SilverLining by SunDog Software. We have implemented the latest cutting-edge version of this which brings a host of improvements and fixes to the Dynamic Lighting and 3D Weather in Train Simulator. Over the course of the next year, the plugin will be tuned, with your feedback, to take advantage of additional performance improvements coming later. This means greater detail, better looking skies and enhanced environmental effects. The first implementation you should already see a difference in how snow and rain render as you drive, with a more realistic representation of distance-based visibility.

Download size will be roughly 300 MB.

For details on how to access, please refer to the introductory article.

    Afternoon to all.

Unsure if I'm misinterpreting what was meant to be added in this first beta, but I loaded a clean install of TS, Ran WCML S at 12pm in Stormy weather. I then quit out, opted in to the beta, and ran the exact same setup, WCML S, 12pm, Stormy.

Now is it just me or is there absolutely no changes? the rain, sky all look the exact same.

Performance there is minimal change too.

Anyone want to play spot the difference here? will be surprised if you can spot which one is the beta :D

Raindrop length is different between the two pictures. That's all I noticed.
    And a quirk with vehicle numbering. 378138 -> 38138, but 378135 -> 38035. Must be the weather.
You could also try cloudy. Maybe it's most visible at certain times of day. I've noted a significant difference between 2016 and 2023 Soldier Summit skies. The article specifically mentions clouds. Someone somewhere also suggested that the plugin default settings look better than the overrides.

For me after 3 crashs it's time for error message.
DTG its possible juste create a simple menu/lobby with just Routes/Lines, Trains and Weather. Just removed the Editor from menu, and Visual Collection of train or also the Shop.

    https://i.gyazo.com/6dd5b50bca39afcfa9043462fb8462fb.png

i think this game need more smooth MENU/Lobby for better loading.

Now i can't just join the menu because my game crash with an error VERTEX D3D just in he lobby menu...

DX12 isn't working (only runs in DX9) and there is no version number on the mainmenu, only in version.txt

ok after Check the cache of game, my game start, and i can see enhance for the sky color and light dynamic render better than the last version. An enhancement also for the Snow flake and Water. However i don't understand why the weather (snow and water) are not dynamic with the speed of train ?

Also a bug from public light. Sometime the light sprite (halo) are too strong and too visible. (watch screenshot)

And i think the light from the moon are too strong. If you want play with clouds, the sky is too brightness for a real night. (maybe hide the moon if we play with clouds)

There are some bright pixels on your picture, but definitely very small.
Looks like it's designed by a person living in a city. Which begs the funny question, should routes like Donner Pass look like a random Swedish nature vlog? :) What about northern lights? :D

Still says "RailSimulator.com" instead of "Focus Entertainment" on the splash screen. ;)

Default Montana/Springfield/Stevens signals still not working here.

Just tried - there are no stars (1.Jul.2010, "3D 1.Clear"). Interestingly Run8 uses SilverLining too, the night looks much better there (stars and less colour banding)

    TSC
    2.png

    Run8 (actually has stars)
    3.png

I do like the moonlit night, maybe a tad too bright, not sure, but very atmospheric (and definitely better than TSW lighting!). Sun and moon discs seem to match the real appearance (most TimeOfDay files use way too big moons - in reality the moon takes the same space as the sun, visible at solar eclipse.)
    11.png

Remember you can adjust the lighting to your needs with the Contrast/Ambient+Sunlight sliders in the ingame options menu.

Snow looks - snowy (1.1.2010, "3D Snowing"), maybe a tad less opacity would be nice? It moves relative to your train, so that's ok.
    321.png

Folks, for testing, remember to use a "3D weather blueprint" in conjunction with DynamicClouds enabled. Scenario date matters for the daylight time.

Testing some more, it's clouds this time. These are different 3D cloud weather blueprints (taken from B&O Kingwood branch, they've supplied a lot of SilverLining blueprints to use.) You can mix cumulii and high clouds, as in screenshot #2.

What I would like to see is a much more intense blue sky. Clear skies around noon still look awkward in SL, and better with many ToD skies. For overcast and rain, snow and fog SL is my preference.

Actually a bug has been fixed, maybe not many noticed this. In previous SL versions using "3D. Raining", the rain itself and the fog layer suddenly disappeared (with the raindrops still appearing on the glass, but not rendered outside). This seems not to be an issue anymore, so way to go :) (One Livonia and a shunting scenario on Soldier Summit come to my mind where the rain/fog layer had disappeared after a few minutes)

Thanks Steve, i'll check it later today. Is DX12 disabled? I think it was running in DX12 mode in a earlier or previous build.

The $64,000 question for many of us is does it play nice with the AP weather and cloud EP’s?

From what I can see so far it seems to.

Haven't played North Wales Coast Line for ages so I can't remember how it used to look, but I tried the 1A23 0855 Holyhead - Euston career trip to see how the snow looks. Seems a bit disorientating to me in the cab view - the snow comes towards you at a fairly constant speed regardless of whether you're sitting in the platform, driving away at 25 or speeding along at 80. I'd expect the speed of the flakes to reflect the train speed, as they do in the external views (2 & 3).

Also noticed in the passenger view (5) that some flakes come through the roof into the passenger cabin :)

Like I say, not sure if these are old issues, thought I'd mention them here if they're not.

ToD and SL are two completely separate systems. SL uses its own weather blueprints, usually named "SL_xyz.bin", displayed as "3D .xyz".
So it never interferes with ToD. The environment gets selected depending on wether a ToD standard 2D weather blueprint (e.g. AP) or an SL type weather is chosen for the scenario (AND DynamicClouds are enabled in the settings - this is sort of the "Master Switch")

All files related to the SL environment are in RailWorks\data\SilverLining - not in the Assets (only the custom weather blueprints)

Snow coming into the pax cabin is a new issue, which has been recorded for investigation.

Not able to replicate the other issue, snow seems to be lazily falling downward in the 1A23 scenario, and picks up momentum with the train speed for me. A video of what you're seeing would be helpful if possible.

So just a bit of feedback on the beta.
Whatever you guys have done its massively boosted my framerates.
Before whilst using the public build I used to get around 25fps with the cab lights on using dynamic lighting.
Using the beta i now get 45fps+ on the huddersfield line using the 142 Pacer.
On other routes i now get a constant 60fps.

My system specs are as follows:
    AMD Ryzen 9 5900x @ 4.7Ghz water cooled
    AMD Sapphire Radeon 7900XT
    32GB DDR4 RAM
    Railworks is on a 2Tb M.2 Drive.
Running 64Bit DX9 (DX12 has massive frame drops for me)
Settings in game are as follows:
    Resolution 3840x2160

Not sure how to record a video right now - I’ll have a go though, and post here if I succeed. Won’t be for a few days though, away this weekend!

    Version 6.39

Try using Borderless Window setting instead of Full Screen.

That's a habit of older DirectX versions - DX Fullscreen feels easily insulted if it loses your attention by Alt-Tabbing. Use Borderless Fullscreen - it is much more system friendly and you can tab out as often as you want without losing the vertex buffer.

    Edit: Crosspost with Steve :)

I noticed this too. (danmed annoying)

It also crashed when I put it on pause tonight. I noticed this new detail, when I went to the shop for a Big M, and came back to a crashed Train Simulator, when I thought all I would have to do was unpause, when I got back.

Intuitively one would select full screen to get the best immersive experience. Is it feasible to have the Full Screen option more robust in the future? If not can it be removed from the selection option in the settings screen?

    Respectfully

Full Screen is sort of necessary as it is a proxy to enable V-Sync. Which would be jolly nice to be supported, alongside fps.
The existing FPS limit is sort of nice but not perfect, as - on my machine - it isn't vertically synced and tends to stutter.
Also, when using a 4K monitor I could still opt for 2K output.

  34. Spikee1975

    Spikee1975 Guest

Interestingly, I'm not using VSync, always prefer running in Borderless if available, have capped the framerate to 75 which matches my freesync monitor Hz. No tearing at all, very smooth.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 runs on DX11, exclusive Fullscreen and I can tab out without issues, so I guess it's really just a DX9 thing.

I can tab out just fine.
Very, very rarely I do get a crash.
But I even left the game here overnight at some point (instead of saving) and some installer ran at 1am so the game was on the taskbar until the morning.
People reported crashes with some kind of enhancement (don't remember which one), just mentioning as it might correlate.
The game doesn't render on the taskbar and even after that only partially - usually. In that case I get a cab and a very distorted view that may or may not be the outside, it renders on unpause. It makes sense (mostly), as games tend to conserve resources while in the background.

As for tearing, I'm not sure whether I do, but when I tried purely fpslimit I would get an alternating experience of nicely smooth rendering and desynced, jumpy, bad rendering, that felt 15-30 (on the old PDL which easily runs at 60-140). It would flip on every tile load. Also, before using V-Sync I had terrible issues on many routes (such as ECML-S) meaning very bursty rendering leading to very low effective fps (10-20) but even the measured fps increased after setting V-Sync. (That route has a baseline 50 fps for me, except when a Class 801 shows up.)

The experience might be related / specific to the hardware composition I have, though.

Beta is working really well for me. Wish I had known about Borderless v Full Screen before. Full Screen on my PC has a habit of bleeding over to my 2nd screen so I am guessing this has been one of my problems all along whilst using TSC.

    I guess you can't fix stupid :)

No. It's not something that is wanted, nor would it make sense - only in Freeroam. But you'd have to completely change the way the game works, so I'm saying 100% no.

If a game is set up in a sand box style like Run8, not scenario-based, and running in realtime while allowing spawning and removing of trains without ever quitting the game, it would be a thing. But TSC is not made for that (gladly no griefers spoiling your fun :) )

They are very subtle at the moment, most of it is behind the scenes :).

If you're aware how to handle Steam appmanifests, you can also install the Beta next to the Stable version. Switch between them by renaming these appmanifest_24010.acf files. (These are sort of Steam's Registry and a brilliant concept btw.)

Additionally I wanted to point out that another advantage of SL over ToD is the sun is rising and setting at the correct angles (NE - S - NW in summer, SE - S - SW in winter) whereas ToD always has the sun going from absolute East over the specified season azimuth to exactly West (this is hardcoded and can't be changed), so it's a bit fake.

For clear SL weather, I'd recommend moving the "Ambient Light Slider" two or three notches down around noon and increase Contrast a little, but that's up to everyone I suppose.

    Great initiative this BETA !

    Thanks !

Too bad there are only 2 threads possible in this forum. Makes discussion virtually impossible, but discussion is perhaps not important in this beta forum.

I'm running the beta version in the default RW location; I've got a 74.4 and a 74.8 version standing outside for comparison. I'm testing on GtraX's Boston & Albany and VNHRR's Springfield line.

    Springfield line:
    1. As of 74.8 the Springfield line doesn't load; it took a patch by Wellington, found at the Train Sim Community site, to get this to load. The same problem persists in 75.4b.
    2. In addition, Springfield will only load in 75.4b in 32 bit mode; 64 bit modes, either DX9 or the experimental DX12 mode, don't load at all.

    Boston & Albany:
    1. I'm still getting lower framerates in DX12 than DX9; I don't even try 32 bit mode with this route.
    2. The SilverLining weather upgrade is, IMHO, a big improvement. I ran the Alco DL109 Cranberry scenario on Springfield, a scenario that runs at night in the winter, and the starry sky behind the clouds was very impressive.

    My specs:
    Processor - 13th Gen Intel Core i913900K 3.00 GHz
    RAM - 32.0 GB
    Video card - RTX3080
    OS - 64-bit Windows 11 Home ver. 22H2

The game does not open at 3840x1080 resolution. It just remains as below.

When I install the BETA can I still play the normal version, or does the BETA replace the normal version ?

The beta will over-write the existing version. However, all you have to do to revert is to follow the instructions for accessing the beta again, and select "None" from the Beta Particpation dropdown menu and Steam will restore the normal version of the game.
