  1. I think we're going to need more tin foil for this one ;)
It would be interesting to know the reasons for the aquisition/sale. I'm sure the long term health of the brand and the product line is a cornerstone and at the heart of every decision.
    I managed that without laughing!

Now to be clear, I'm not being serious here!!

If I do put my serious hat on, the obvious effort that Matt and others are putting in, replying in here out of hours, clearly putting in the hard yards during the day, all that is very very positive. Let's not allow paranoia and a desire for improvements to detract from that.

It's rather for profit & future projects, instead of paying the employees for the work they've already done. You buy TSW4, so the future projects can proceed (like for example TSW5), since maintenance of already released content is minimal.

Welcome to page 26! Given the history with the NEC disaster, we are only about 9 pages away from DTG taking note of the grievances here. Keep it up :D

Is there worth it to keep playing TSW because of how expensive it gets I don't know if I want to continue anymore if DTG continues to raise prices in my personal opinions?.

Ummmm almost all of them no one writes game engines from scratch any more.
    It's to expensive.

Most common game engines these days all have roots to the early 2000s.
Companies routinely update their game engines. As each new game comes out.

Take a look at dcs world that engine is just as old as the TSC engine but they updated constantly.
It looks like a modern game engine now.

Rockstar after losing licensing for the engine they used to power all the Ps2 era grand theft auto games, decided to create their own game engine for gta iv.
They still use that same game engine.

Unreal engine is has been continually update for 25 plus years now.

Same with ID tech powering the modern doom games.

Source is valves engine and again they have been updating it for 20 years now.
    Soon to release source 2.

Bethesda uses the same engine from morrowwind.

I find it quit funny how little dtg has actually done to update tsc.

    No direct input support still.
    Can't disable head tracking.
    No vsync.
The hacky way to add Vulcan rendering works better then thier official dx12 release.
    LOVE AA.
    The list could go on.
Like every thing they do it's the bare minimum.

A Bit late here, but real life stepped in and you know how we ole geezers are bit slow with the aging years :)

Actually, I spent plenty of quarters on those arcade games, while the egg heads were busy making the first computer game, Ponk it was a raging hit back in yea ole days, I remember buying what looked like a very fat keyboard kinda heavy, but you hooked it up your TV and you had a makeshift PC and could play Ponk and few other things.

But then the party days came along, and the biggest worry was where the next party was and who was paying, but I digress, I still remember playing OG Diablo game online Co-Op via Dial up and the AOL days on a Windows 98 PC with an intel Pentium CPU. Then a game came around called Earth & Beyond was also an MMO/co-op game via AOL dial up, I really liked it it was fun, but EA Games came along and bought up the studio that created it and all it’s assets and holdings and shut down the servers effectively killing that game.

Now there is a group of people who are working to bring Earth & Beyond back, have not looked into it yet but it does look interesting.
I still have that ole Win98 PC with it’s 56k modem :) from Gateway trying to get it back to life if I can.

There weren’t many other games that I was interested in, I mean there was OG Doom and stuff like that, but again there was life that stepped in and more important things needed my attention. A little rambalie? Maybe! But as Jetwash had stated more than once in not so many words the polls are mostly rubbish, even the tiny one I referenced and yet I would really like to see an honest and true metric of how DTG is measuring everything from TSC to TSW4 as it stands today, no Fluffernutter just good ole hard truth.

Polls keep being bounced around like Ponk, but never a real honest and truthful metric why?

Well, enough about that, then the day came when Microsoft announced Xbox, and Jumped on it like white on rice, the OG Xbox special Halo edition, I saved my duckets and almost didn’t get it, the bone heads at GameStop tried to pull a fast one, but I got it, and still have some of the games for it. I had moved from PC gaming to Xbox gaming, it was around that time, and going forward that console gaming really took off, the Nintendo, Sony genius? With the game cartridges, not too long after that games that were made for PC were being ported to consoles not long after PS 1 came out, and so on.

Now very few and I mean very few games are made for PC only, but more than not are made for console and then ported to PC, and between the two optimizations is being lost, yes consoles have gotten better, but there is a trade-off, the Series X has 1TB max internal storage, the series S and PS5 I’m unsure of, while you can get a Seagate XB authorized expansion for a hefty price, so you can still play the Series X optimized games, otherwise your SOL.

Now I can an 8TB well more like 7.5 ssd or around thereabouts with provisioning for about the same price, the system specs in my signature, that is all open box, “well not the PSU or ram”, the rest is and from Microcenter, I’m still paying it off, actually it’s more my daughters than mine. I’ll be lucky to get another good 15 years of gaming, 20 on the outside in my lifetime.

As the saying goes ya can’t take it with ya, and I’d rather give to my children than the Government…

But yes I would rather play on a PC than a console, at least on PC I don’t have to uninstall a game to install one I want to play, and I own a lot of Xbox games, I have played them many are on disc, and some I never will. One thing I will say “Honest & True” is I will never buy another DLC for TSW3 or TSW2 on my Xbox. PC I already own them all, over the past year that is. As for TSW4 I made my statement and will see how and what becomes of it, I have my own thoughts that I will get to in time, but as it stands much will not be released on or very near the 26, it clearly states it in the live stream.

As gaming has come along over the years, it started to get good for a while, but not very long, we got Half-life 2, it still had its issues here and there, but still a good game, but it slowly died out as valve turns into steam and they made few added chapters but it was left to rot on the vine, then was F.E.A.R. that was and still is a good game they did pretty good with the AI, but that to was left to rot on the vine by the time it came to the third version.

Dead Space was and still is a good game, but all were very linear, might as well just walk down a hall and shoot the monsters as popped out a door, Crysis was not bad and with the cry-engine being hailed as the next best thing, is basically dead in the water. UE is being talked about a lot and a video was made Take an R1T jungle ride powered by Unreal Engine | Rivian now there is UE5 but who is really utilizing it, TSW4 has not nor can it, and bring all TSW3 DLCs along for the ride.

As it’s been stated, many if not all games are still using outdated if not old, and tired game engines, just look at how FO76 rolled out, now it may have gotten better, but by how much? Then there is Cyberpunk 2077 which also was a debacle, I have not heard much about it, other than it was to get a massive update to try and correct all that is wrong with it. Not to mention the lawsuits that may still be in the courts, Many of the games I just mentioned are, for the most part, dead on the vine or slowly dying on the vine.

DTG is trying to keep TSW alive and reinvent it kind of with a few new things, but much of that should have been out already, as I have read in the forums, I see it as they are trying but IMHO, this is not how I would have done it, be it as it may, in one-day early access is there for those of us that did buy in and we will see what is there and not there. Like Free Roam there are many games like Derail Valley that are completely open world, yes they are a smaller Dev team, but it’s growing on people and it has a career mode and sandbox mode where you do whatever you want, this is not the first game to have an open world, and it is a small game world, but they too are still working on it. They could use some more people to move the development along.

While yes I did compare, DV and DTG, it’s just to show that this has been a thing for some time now, and they are very different games, FO3 & 4 have been open world for a very long time, I don’t see why TSW could not have been, and yes with a player character, not just an invisible camera that controls the train, yes you can choose from a few toons and times my toon looks like the T800. There is so much that could have been done with TSW2,3 and now 4 and for the most part not much has changed. Well from little I saw, but who knows what surprises will come.

Much of what I stated here about other games is in a way touching on what karlack26 has said in post-1259

Wind98 PC is kind of alive :)

That's why my post continued with more explanation. The number is definitely not defined by the poll, but at the same time it can swing in both direction, not just one way.

That would probably explain the DLC galore this February. So many releases before the end of the fiscal year, which definitely needed to look good for the sale.

Agree with some of what you say, for example there are a few routes I see no AI using no wipers in the rain. These are well known German routes and it seems bit lazy to not catch that or fix it. These little but important things hurt the immersion. It's a sim so lets be more vigilant in not overlooking these things DTG. I hope these new routes in TSW4 are better for these little but important aspects in the game. QC has to be better before releasing routes. Tired of buying a route and it's missing something.

Maybe they should have dropped the "sim" from the title. Just put Train World. Immersion wouldn't matter as much :D

There are fascinating interviews with those old-guard game developers talking about the ingenious ways came up with to manipulate the physical characteristics of the hardware they had to get the effect they wanted (or ways they came up with to use the effect they accidentally got). Those guys took "thinking outside the box" to another level.

Definitely. Did they ever fix the stretch of river in Linke Rheinesrecke that had no river texture? A lot of people (hopefully everyone, except DTG apparently) noticed it in the live stream, and discussed it on the forum afterwards, but I never saw anyone mention a fix.

Of course that patch had to flood the whole scenery, which - in term - was then fixed in a later patch.
So, not much to feed expectations for a better QA.

( Solved ) Lfr Severely Flooded After 7th Of June Patch?

  26. Im watching the stream atm. Credit where credits due, Flying Scotsman looks beautiful and the route looks quite good too. Havent had a chance to assess stuttering etc either but atm its very easy on the eye.
Edit- stutters still there :( It looks great but the stutters are so annoying which is a great pity.

Must admit I'm surprised that people haven't hit the roof screaming and ranting because she has been modeled with her German style smoke deflectors, as it's never been the masses favourite configuration of the loco......

    • Like Like x 1
  28. Yeah, good point. Its still a really well modelled locomotive though I'd say. Ive stopped watching now. Not much point as the stutters were doing my head in just watching let alone playing the route..
Edit, on the plus side the flickering didnt seem so bad but I dont know if thats because TAA was turned off, the train was in motion or if its actually reduced.

For me the ultimate prize would be Evening Star, the last 9F and British Rail steam loco built, rolled out of Swindon works on the 18 March 1960, the only 9F to carry Brunswick green passenger livery.

It's a nice mention, but to say that it is a common experience in games using Unreal Engine is just false. I've played many games using this same game engine over the years on many platforms and none of them run this poorly.

Out of curiosity, what GFX engine does Snowrunner use? Been having a go this evening and smooth as butter, despite far more detail than TSW offers.

I thought Snowrunner ran on a custom engine. I remember way way back when Spintires came out that the precursor was a simple tech demo created by one Russian developer in his spare time. But I agree, wonderful detail in that game with tons and tons of activities to do.

That may be just the thing that is in the works now and the mountain of DLCs that would need to be reworked, cooked, baked, fried, mmm french fries :) I do not see many that would buy the DLCs all over again unless they rebuild TSW from the ground up and all new DLC content.

Now that is even better than the Rivian UE video, WoW I can only imagine the Trains rendered in the UE 5.3 engine. I really do envy the younger generation, what marvels are to come with this type of tech.

This sim? Yes you can. It's good on Unreal 4 for another couple of versions.
The next sim? That can be on Unreal 5. Making everyone discard all their content for minor improvements from Unreal 5 (it's still a VERY new engine) is just not going to work.

Just to clarify as i think this gets tossed about without much context.

Moving to UE 5+ doesn't mean it will look like that out of the box. You're just seeing what it is capable of with the right assets, shaders, lighting engines etc. DTG would need to convert a massive amount of the game and its functions, especially graphical and their custom physics engine.

The franchise is very far off of ever going near UE5 unless they can port a lot of their tools, assets and physics engine across with ease.
