All these suggestions are great! I like the new hud but don’t know how you folks can read some of the train speedometers. IRL I’m sure they’re fine, but they can be quite a challenge to read on a screen. And that’s either sitting at a desk with a 28” screen, or in front of a 65” tv. The class 66 is the best, a nice clear readable speedometer.
Some can be quite tricky, especially in adverse lighting. As a point, have you tried increasing the Screen percentage slider in the options? As I understand it (I could be wrong), it uses more processing power but produces better resolutions, or at least clear visual on small details like speedos. Might help.
Can I echo the comments about placing the speed on the HUD, I am finding it near impossible to read speed off the speedometer
Not looking to remove the gradient, and yes, i'm looking to add a speedometer to the mini hud as an option too potentially. No promises here, just trying ot keep you up to speed with my thoughts Matt.
Yes absolutely, even just a small box with nothing but your speed inside it, maybe like a TVM display screen, could have the up/down widget from that too.
Good idea. The up/down arrow from the TGV dashboard could replace the bigger accelerometer from the big HUD.
It's comments like this that make me smile just like you in your profile picture. Thank you Matt, you know if the Jedi had Yoda , DTG has you
A digital speedometer would be a great fit. Even on the older HUD the dial could be replaced with a digital speedo (if at all possible), whilst keeping all the other information available.
Gradient's one of the trickiest to keep track of hudless, the rest of the info is handily always clearly visible there on your instruments.
I rather like NOT having the speed on the HUD - makes me do a better instrument scan rather than staring at the HUD. Or if you do decide to put a speedometer on the HUD, make it optional
I think what we’re seeing here is there is no one size fits all. Ultimately this needs to be customisable rather than it being decided for us.
Hopefully the one thing everyone agrees with, is the new design overall is a huge improvement, it just needs that customisation so everyone can have as little, or as much as they need & want.
Is there a keybind to toggle the HUD type from normal/simple/minimal/off? Rather than have to keep going into the menu to change it? I love the minimal, but sometimes need the old version for precise stopping. I know we can hit control+1 for the distance marker but it breaks immersion for me. Thanks for any help!
Pretty sure i've used words like configurable, option and setting throughout this discussion I don't want the speedo on there either, but i'll relent and understand that there are those that do. Matt.
Can we have the speed on the minimal HUD as digits at the top without the huge screen-hogging round thing please. I want to use the minimal HUD but I spend a lot of time outside the cab which makes it impossible to monitor your speed.
Personally, loving the new "minimal" Hud. One big gripe I have is the lack of a distance counter more than the "Barber pole" stick (as I've come to call it) over an on-screen marker, considering the new Hud was designed to increase immersion, this feels like such a blatant miss on the Dev teams part. One thing I have noticed using the new Hud is just how much more attention I'm paying to the actual locomotive controls and gauges, which, especially with the Scotsman, really makes you feel the synergy between man and machine. I've also started noticing speed in a much more... let's say, "natural" way, I'm looking at how quickly bridges, trees, fences, crossings approach etc and making a speed estimate in my head and have become increasingly surprised and delighted when I'm almost bang on the money looking back at the Speedo in the cab. Need to fix the audio issues with safety systems on PS5 too, as it's almost silent currently which again, hinders the use of the minimal Hud, especially with the light bar switched off.
Agree 100%. Keep everything else about the new HUD, but add an option to swap out the distance bar with distance value.
Come on, I’ll happily point DTG out on issues & things I disagree with, but comments like this when DTG are in here communicating & gathering thoughts, whilst actively working on the issue is the wrong way to go. What’s the point in any of the complaining when you’re going to act like that, when DTG actually give you what you want. Now if it turns out it is TSW 5 when we get a HUD update, I’ll be on that hill with you. In the meantime we made our dismay known with the Azuma & within 3 working days got new sounds for it, so let’s wait and see what happens.
That is what I get for skimming through the forums, .. missed those key words… TBH just finished a run with the new HUD and was glowing with enjoyment with the improvement over the old one… good job
Glad you're enjoying it - it's certainly delivered what I was hoping it would, by making you feel more like a train driver. Matt.
I love the new hud and agree its much more imersive but would it be possible to adjust the Bar from 1 KM to 2 Km and adjustment when the line and loco is in miles. Just an Idea Love the new TSW 4 as i loved every edition since coming to XBOX.
Totally agree the Hud with adjustable options is the best thing I spent a Sh***load of money updatiing my console to the new xbox series X for this game but not alot of people have that ability and so long as we have 8th gen support we need to give them the best chance to achieve in this game.
Generally, I’m really enjoying the new mini HUD. Can’t wait to use it on the legacy content later today I have to say I’m among the people who don’t want a speedometer on it, I actually enjoy looking at the information in the cab that much that going back to the previous HUD feels wrong now! If I have an improvement suggestion, I think the new track monitor HUD bar should look a bit further ahead and show objective markers on it. Maybe you could have options to toggle how far it looks ahead. Change 1.25mi to 1mi, then have two new options for 2mi and 3mi. In the same way, the “barber pole” should remain as an option alongside the more traditional countdown for the new HUD. I think barber pole could be improved so that it starts as Green, and as you get closer to your objective it gradually changes from green to yellow to red, then when it becomes red, then the bar starts decreasing down to the objective stop point.
Yeah, this. I *think* Matt has alluded to it becoming configurable which is the best solution. For me it is perfect right now bar the missing DTG (distance to go - like what I did there?) counter. I don’t want a speedo on the HUD, it’s right there in front of me in the cab. I don’t want to sit staring at the HUD, although I appreciate others might wish to play that way. I think the one thing this new hud has done is make us all collectively realise changing it up was a good move. It is clear we all want different things out of it, so rather than try to squash all the info in to a small space, a lot of which will be redundant for many people, I think it would be best if we can pick what we want and where we want it displayed. If engaging and actually listening is the new normal, and an intentional change, then more of it please.
THIS is an amazing idea!! Also, i can see the concern for having a speedometer somewhere in the mini HUD as for some locos it’s nearly impossible to read the in-cab speeds cause the screens are either too bright/dark (it’s particularly tough in the NYT version of the ACS-64) or the text is too small and also if you’re doing yard maneuvers and need an external camera view it’s nice to see speed from that angle as well. Even if it’s an option that can be toggled in settings where it’ll read as the current speed then the limit right next to it would be very helpful. (ie: 123/125). Personally though, i’m okay without that as the rail driver displays the current speed so i use that as my in-cab readout.
They communicate on very selective level, I got NONE response for my long time questions on this forum (easy to prove it) And so be it as ostracised member of this "forum" I take on my role as reminder that behind this fanboy facade there is still this same old clockwork machine that needs rework and simulation (not easeaccesfunshots) development.
I also love the new HUD, especially the new display on the top right that shows speed limits and signals ahead. But for the love of it, I'd also really really like to see a) the distance to my next station and b) also the current enforced speed limit. Currently I'm driving with the normal HUD and disabled the lower right speedometer and stuff with ctrl+5, but due to that I never know which speed limit is currently enforced. I think on the minimal HUD however, you see the current speed limit in the top left? And regarding the distance to the next stop/station, it'd be cool if it could be implemented into the new speed limit/signal ahead thing in the top right.
The current speed limit is on the new hud. It’s one of the big improvements. No more clicking CTRL+5 when you’ve forgotten.
Yes I remember. but I think with the new HUD you don't get any info on the next stop. So you have to choose what you want to know. Either current speed limit or next stop :P
Another fine example of the downsides of using preset configurations rather than full customization by the user.
Id love to see a resume save game from the pause menu, or right after failure, no need to go back to the main menu each time. Also, when in game and we bring up the map, why cant we have location/station markers? Like actual route maps? I think thats a no brainer.
Just a thought: How about a colourful representation of "slow (colour 1)" and "too fast (colour 2)" as the background-colour of the HUD. They are changing, so when you get near to speeding, colour 2 fades in.
Ultimately one of the bigger purposes of the new HUD was to get players using the locos' own gauges, call-outs etc rather than passively driving the train via the universal HUD. From my few hours worth of gameplay I think the new HUD is doing an excellent job, it's understandable why the loco speed was one of the big things the new HUD left out. I'm on the same page as everyone else, a couple minor toggle options to customise the HUD would please everyone, and then the legacy HUD is always there for folk who want / need it. Even in its current form though, the new HUD is definitely one of the big new changes that's making TSW4 feel fresh to me. I'm really looking forward to trying it on some of my exisitng DLC routes and seeing how some prior knowledge & experience of the route might enhance the new HUD further.
Personally, I mostly don't use the speedo on the HUD. But specifically when shunting in reverse, I like to use the external camera and pretend I'm a shunting assistant – standing on the step at the rear of the last carriage (in some cases even inside the last carriage). But then I don't know what speed I'm going, or even what my controls are set to, so the HUD becomes essential. Apart from that, there are the things that have been mentioned before: A distance counter for the next stop, and a longer track monitor. Although, when it comes to these two, I think it could be an interesting thought to combine them as well, and add the option to show the next stop in the track monitor once it's close enough. On a side note, are there plans to make a dedicated HUD feedback thread on the forum? There are smaller issues that I neither want to hijack threads like this one or create a general discussion thread for, and it would also make it easier to see if they've already been pointed out.
Glad it's not just me. I try to read the speed on the actual train panel but, it is way too small for my eyes. I do wear glasses. If the option for small hud could be smaller, that would be perfect. Not really feeling this new hud. Just my opinion.
I’m liking the new hud especially on minimal as I get to see less hud and more of the game, but I find the when looking at the speed inside the train I can’t read it even with glasses on.
If you could swap in the good ol' distance counter in meters, or make it optional, that would be great. Also, it would be awesome if the current speed limit were optional as well.
I know it's a tricky question, but could you give us any ETA on when we can expect these promising HUD updates?
